    ——–

Producer: So Rishi, we wanna cast you in a comedy sketch about a modern-day entrepreneur.

Me: Ok, interesting. Tell me more.

P: So, the business idea is that he sells
    nuts.

    Me: Nuts?

P: Yea, like peanuts, groundnuts, some
    Sugar-coated chickpeas etc.

    Me: Ok.

P: And, he goes into the heartlands to sell these.

    Me: Ok.

P: And he keeps moving from block to block selling these nuts.

    Me: Keeps moving?

P: Yea, cos he sells the products out of a pushcart mah.

    Me: Ok.

P: And as people go around, he calls out to them to asks them to buy his nuts.

Me: So, he sells peanuts out of a push cart, and calls out to customers to buy his peanuts?

    P: Ya ya ya!

Me: Are you asking me to play a kacang putih man?

P: YAA!! It’s damn funny hor!!

The issue of minority typecasting is prevalent in showbiz all over the world.

    Prevalent does not mean correct.
Is it with malicious racial intent?
    Perhaps not.
Is it borne out of ignorance?
    Perhaps.
Is that an excuse? Definitely not.
Is it a reality? Most definitely.

I’ve discussed this issue openly on stage and online, and I’m sure most actors who do comedy, like Haresh Tilani from SG and Vivek Mahbubani from HK, have addressed it in some way or the other. But since it’s done through comedy, maybe people find it easier to digest these perspectives, OR maybe since it’s part of a comedy routine, they take it less seriously.

From his posts about this event, it seems like it was an epiphany for the actor, and probably an important one, that as actors, we all have a threshold and there are some roles you won’t do cos it doesn’t agree with your beliefs/principles and you feel that performing the character does more harm than good to yourself and your community. And It sounds like he has found that clarity of truth and choice, which are not just cornerstones of playing convincing characters, they are also the building blocks of being a human being.

An actor from a minority group in Singapore shared his discomfort and discontent about an audition and more importantly, if we can all pay attention, the state of affairs of minority representation in the media in Singapore.

Agree with him, or disagree with him, but please, let’s not vilify him or digress from
the issue he has raised by personally attacking him.

By doing any of those two things, we are doing nothing but proving the point- that the voice of the minority, whichever accent it may be in, will be drowned out if it’s not in agreement with the majority.

Me: Are you asking me to play a kacang putih man?

P: YAA!! It’s damn funny hor!!

Me: An Indian Kacang Putih seller as a stock character would’ve been hilarious in 1985.
    But it’s not anymore. Cos it’s 2017.

Ahmad Stokin: Usah Bertelagah Tentang Isu Halal/Haram Di Bazaar Ramadan, Ada Isu-Isu Lebih Penting Untuk Masyrakat Tangani

Pd pandangan ambo masaalah “halal/haram” tu doh jadi masaalah individu.

Pendapat ambo, salah kito2 lah. Antaronyo mungkin pendidikan ugama kito yg “asas” pon kito tak ado ya tak. apo ke tidak nyo, kalau ada komen yg “eleh yg penting nawaitu” hehehe ambo tanyo apo sebonarnyo nawaitu ko tu dik?

Soalan ambo : Apo bezanyo gerai berkenaan dibazaar yg tak ado sitikepit halal dongan gerai/warong/kedai prata rojak meegoreng n briyani si muthusami yg selama ini org2 kita langgani bertahun2 lamanya??? (wajib jawap tau) kehkehkeh

Cara kita tangani masaalah ini dgn mudah ialah kalau kita tau satu2 gerai tu menjual barangan yg tak halal, kita bersatu hati STOP jangan langgani gerai tu, “Tak ada pelanggan KOMPOM tutup bisnis dia” kankankan. Jadi kunci nya tu saja “bersatu hati” lah kita.

P/s ambo lebeh suko kalau kita lebeh pikirkan, lebeh perihatin tentang issue “TUDUNG” kita. Apasal ramai yg tak peduli? Apasal perjuangan terbengkalai separuh jalan, doh bertahun tahun pon kan.

Ohhhh Pelisssss jgn ckp itu masaalah lain ok,itu tetap masaalah kita.

Selamat berbuka nanti maghrib (pd yg puasa lahhhhh) hehe

  • Osman Sulaiman: Opposition Party Leaders Should Not Curtail Freedom Of Speech

Osman Sulaiman: Opposition Party Leaders Should Not Curtail Freedom Of Speech

When I heard news that Lim Tean has resigned from NSP, I wasnt surprised of the reasons for his resignation.

Curtailment of his freedom of speech is one of it. And we are talking about freedom of speech where it’s done in a responsible manner. Not the Amos Yee or Charlie Hebdo kind of free speech.

Often times, it’s the alternative parties that espouses freedom of speech but in reality, fall short of implementing it within its own organization.

I encountered many times where alternative parties feel uneasy when its members are vocal about issues they feel strongly about.

Issues like LGBT, Tudung issue, discrimination, religion, 377A, article 154 etc.

Party members are always reminded to ‘tone’ down, or a messenger will come to relay message not to get too vocal or get involved in any protest speeches.

This effectively curb or placed an OB marker on a person to be mindful not to engage in anything the party leaders deemed unsuitable.

But of course not all of the alternative parties hold such unwritten rules. It depends on the leader at helm.

For instance, we have leaders from the Reform Party (RP), Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), People’s Power Party (PPP) and Singapore First Party (SFP) who allow its member to participate freely in a democratic society.

It give members the freedom to have differing opinions from the party’s stand.

Some may argue that members need to toe along the party lines to achieve unity within the organization but by doing so, it instead create artificial harmony within its rank.

These parties are then no better than the PAP, the very one they hope to replace.

My advice to political leaders with ambition to rule Singapore, deal with these sensitive issues and not fetter your members from discussing matters that are crucial to the development of the country. If you are to be a leader, you will need to solve problems, not suppressing it.

In this aspect, Im proud to be a part of The Reform Party where its leadership never once tried to curtail my freedom of speech as long as it is done in a responsible manner.

I wish Lim Tean all the best. It is better to move away than to be in a party and gets zipped up. That can spell the end of democracy.

  • Abdul Rahman Mohamed: Hukum Membuat Dapur Kubur

Abdul Rahman Mohamed: Hukum Membuat Dapur Kubur

    Kemusykilan Rakyat

Hukum Membuat Dapur Kubur dan Tanya MUIS

    Soalan

  • World’s Largest Muslim Youth Wing Calls For Re-Examination Of Islamic Text

World’s Largest Muslim Youth Wing Calls For Re-Examination Of Islamic Text

JOMBANG, East Java, Indonesia: The world’s largest Muslim youth organisation Gerakan Pemuda Ansor (GP Ansor) – the youth wing of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organisation Nadlatul Ulama (NU) – on Monday (May 22) called for a re-examination of Islamic text to adapt it to modern civilisation.

The call is a bold move from NU and comes three weeks after the jailing of Jakarta’s first ethnic Chinese Christian governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as Ahok. His conviction has raised concerns that extremists are gaining an upper hand in a country long known as the face of moderate Islam.

NU claims to have 50 million followers. Its youth wing GP Ansor warned that failure to re-examine the text will see continued bloodshed in Muslim countries, which could “threaten humanity”.

“A wide discrepancy now exists between the structure of Islamic orthodoxy and the context of Muslims’ actual reality,” said Luthfi Thomafi, a member of GP Ansor’s board. “(This is) due to immense changes that have occurred since the teachings of orthodox Islam, which became largely ossified towards the end of the medieval era.”

“Civil discord, acts of terrorism, rebellion and outright warfare – all pursued in the name of Islam – will continue to plague Muslims and threaten humanity at large, until these issues are openly acknowledged and resolved,” Thomafi added.

Among the complex issues that lie at the heart of this discrepancy are practices governing relations between Muslims and non-Muslims, according to GP Ansor. These include the rights, responsibilities and role of non-Muslims who live in Muslim-majority societies and vice versa.

The group on Monday issued a GP Ansor Declaration on Humanitarian Islam which provides a strategic road map for a coordinated, long-term effort to address issues in the Islamic world.

Key elements in the strategy include:

    – New theological discourse (ijtihad) to recontextualise Islamic teachings for the modern era;

    – Development and adoption of new educational curriculum throughout the Islamic world; and

    – Grassroots movement(s) to build societal consensus and political will.

“Our goal is to develop an international network leading to the emergence of a global movement which shall be dedicated to the well-being of humanity as a whole – and to the fostering of a truly global civilisation – inspired by ‘humanitarian Islam’, likened to Islam rahmatan li al-‘alamin, which serves as a blessing for all creation,” said Thomafi.
