Man Issued Stern Warning For Flying Unauthorised Drone During SEA Games Closing Ceremony

A 55-year-old man has been issued a stern warning by authorities after he flew an unmanned aircraft in the vicinity of the National Stadium, which has been gazetted as a Special Event Area.

Police said that the incident took place on Jun 16 during the Closing Ceremony of the 28th SEA Games.

The man had used the drone to take photos of the fireworks display at the ceremony even though he did not have a permit to do so in a Special Event Area. After completing investigations and consulting the Attorney-General’s Chambers, the man was given a stern warning on Jun 18.

Police added that flying such an aircraft without a permit can threaten public safety and security, especially in areas where large crowds are gathered. Flying one near a fireworks area is also especially dangerous and can cause harm to those watching the display.

  • Zainal Sapari: Is Outsourcing Always The Best Solution?

Zainal Sapari: Is Outsourcing Always The Best Solution?

I have been talking about the Government sector’s move into the world of outsourcing of their essential services. In my recent interview with Mothership.sg, I have mentioned this again. Well, as expected, there were some disagreeing views. But I stand firm with my thoughts.

The strategy of outsourcing jobs in the public service has affected many professions such as cleaning, security and landscaping. When outsourcing came about, it brought many advantages to the business market. Companies could better manage their operations as they were now focused on core businesses. But it also brought with it many setbacks – for the workers.

At some circumstances, when contracts change hands, workers are the ones who are affected most. Their terms of employment may be reset, especially their salaries. In my view, one major employer that can prevent this from happening is the Government.

My strong affirmation on this comes from my childhood experiences. My Father back then was employed as daily-rated worker with the Public Works Department. As a Civil Servant, he enjoyed all the welfare benefits that were pegged to his scope. And so did our family. I wish this can be the case for all low-wage workers in the public sector – that they are direct employees so that they are shielded, to some extent, from the harshness of the economic system.

This I why when I heard about the Housing Development Board Staff Union (HDBSU) and HDB’s successful emplacement of its security staff into the Operations Support and Management Support Schemes of Service, I was gratified.

The union had discussed at length with the management partners on taking care of the interest of these workers in the best way they could. The Security Scheme of Service was to be discontinued and there were 18 employees who were to be impacted. After much discussion, both sides decided to retain these workers within the organisation. In a gist, 17 security officers were placed onto the Operations Support Scheme (OSS) and one Assistant Security Officer was placed into the Management Support Scheme. With this change, the security employees are set to have better career paths and prospects.

My staff had a chat with one of the security officers at HDB, Mr Suhaimi Bin Aman, aged 56 years old. Mr Suhaimi shared that life in the security profession with HDB has been fulfilling. Above all, the major peace of mind he has is on job security. “There are some friends we know of who are outsourced workers, and their livelihoods really depends on the company’s tender. There is no form of commitment on the workers’ part as well. When you are in-house, there is a greater level of certainty with your job.”, he told my staff.

This IS the reality. NTUC has done some work that enables our workers in the lowest rung – our cleaners – to earn at least $1,000 with the Progressive Wage Model. Yet, the solution to help these workers who find their careers on a reset mode is still yet to be uncovered. With the progressive wage, even if the wage is reset, it is reset to a minimum level of $1,000 or $1,200 if you are skilled.

My hope is for the Government sector to consider directly hiring for positions like cleaners, security officers and the landscape workers.

  • Amos Yee Is Talking To Himself And Hallucinating In Prison

Amos Yee Is Talking To Himself And Hallucinating In Prison

Ever since Amos Yee was forced into 3 weeks remand, there has been little news about his condition apart from the revelations by his lawyer Alfred Dodwell who has since been censored for publishing court documents.

A reader alerted us to Amos’s mothers Facebook which clearly shows the ill-effects of prison life taking its toll on Amos’s mental health.

    Amos’s mother Mary said:

“Amos’ cellmates told him that he could be suffering from hallucinations. He was seen talking to himself and hitting the walls repeatedly. He became worried as he could not remember any such things done. He also has difficulty falling asleep, having only about 2 to 3 hrs of sleep everyday.

Amos looks even skinnier today. He said pimples have grown on his body and made him feel itchy. When I told him that Dodwell & TOC were told to remove the ‘Firm Letter to Court’, he kept asking, “Why? Why remove?” At one point, he hit repeatedly on the glass piece separating us apart so hard that it invited 3 police officers over.”

It appears that Amos is not coping well with prison and may be suffering from a mental breakdown. Is this how Singapore treats our 16 year olds? What do you think? Does Amos deserve such harsh and draconian treatment?

  • Are PAP Goodies Enough To Secure Your Votes?

Are PAP Goodies Enough To Secure Your Votes?

The PAP is sparing no expense to buy votes and win the next GE under the guise of celebrating S’pore’s jubilee year.

If S’poreans vote for them again because of this $500, it would be akin to taking the money and slapping themselves because this political model is just not sustainable.

The PAP’s hegemony built on political bullying and ruthless and methodical marginalization of political opposition and critics has both intimidated and alienated a significant segment of the population who would otherwise have joined politics and made valuable contributions to the growth of this country.

As one can see over the last 10 years, this is not healthy as S’pore reaches a plateau in terms of economic and social development based on a paradigm that revolves around boosting GDP by importing cheap labour and keeping a docile population attuned to and quietly and unquestioningly following the dictates of the ruling Party.

In fact, under Lee Hsien Loong the future looks bleak as he continues to draw on his military fraternity to fill up ministerial posts. How many of these ex-generals have impressed you or performed up to the standard one expects of anyone who draws more than a million dollar in salary?

Is this the kind of environment you want your children to grow up in?

    Let’s think about it.
    Carefully.

Is your children’s future worth only $500 which in effect represents a drop in the ocean considering the billions that this Government collects in the form of various taxes from ERP to COEs to Stamp Duties?

  • Tunku Idris Reminds Malaysia Of Agreement

Tunku Idris Reminds Malaysia Of Agreement

As his brother, Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, came under fire from a federal minister, younger brother Tunku Idris posted an eyebrow-raising image on Instagram.

The image was purportedly that of Johor’s agreement to becoming part of the Federation of Tanah Melayu.

The Sunday posting – which was removed today without explanation – came after Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz warned Tunku Ismail not to meddle in politics or risk being “whacked”.

The image posted by Tunku Idris stated that the late Sultan Abu Bakar inked the ‘Perjanjian Setia’ in 1885 between the Johor government and British government.

“At the time Johor was known as the independent and sovereign state of Johor.

In 1946, the Johor government agreed to sign the Perjanjian Persekutuan with the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, by imposing several conditions, including Islam as the official religion of the state, the land in Johor being the absolute right of the Johor government and cannot be disturbed without the agreement of the Johor government, the Askar Timbalan Setia Negeri cannot be disbanded, as well as the power of the Johor government being in the hands of the sultan.

“If any of the conditions are violated, Johor will be out of Malaysia [sic].”

There was no title or caption with regard to the 28-year-old prince’s posting, but other Instagram users touched on the issue of secession.

Some of the comments ranged from agreeing to Johor quitting the Federation, while others urged the young prince to keep calm.

Yesterday, some 2,000 Johoreans staged a rally outside the Istana Bukit Serene in support of the royal family and called for Nazri’s resignation.

The minister, however, has refused to back down.
