Massive 8 Vehicle Pile-Up At AYE Caused By Vehicle Moving Against Traffic

A massive 8 vehicle pile up early this morning caused a massive jam from Buona Vista to Yuan Ching along the Ayer Rajah Expressway this morning. The cause – a driver of a red Honda vehicle had been driving against traffic flow on the first lane of the expressway before he collided head on with a blue Comfort Delgro taxi

The impact of the crash left the front ends of the Honda and the taxi badly smashed, with the wheels of the taxi flung out by the impact. The rear end of the red Honda was also flattened from the impact with other vehicles, who could not veer in time to avoid the crash.

In total, 4 taxis, 2 cars, 1 lorry and 1 motorcyclist were involved in the accident.

Police confirmed that they received a call early this morning and dispatched emergency vehicles to assist. The 60 year-old Chinese man who drove the red Honda, along with 2 other casualties were conveyed conscious to the National University of Singapore Hospital.

Family members of the red Honda driver were shocked when told of what caused the accident. According to family members, the 60 year-old driver had left his home in Jurong at about 8AM in the morning and did not seem out of sorts. They did not believe that he had driven against traffic along the AYE as expressway speeds are high and very dangerous.

    Police are investigating the case.

Walid J. Abdullah: Society, Not State, The Answer To Police And Nip Seditious Comments

I always get worried when someone is charged or jailed for saying something ‘wrong’. Believe me, i know all about racist/derogatory comments (i am Muslim and Indian, after all!), but even with regards to those who make such remarks towards my religion or ethnicity, i would never advocate for the strong arm of the law to punish the offender.

And what is even more worrying for me, i see so many people cheering the sentence of the dude who allegedly hurt so many Singaporeans with his comments; and in fact, many are asking for a longer jail term.

Do we really have to punish people who make the slightest of offensive remarks? Can’t we disagree loudly and passionately, or call them out ourselves? Can we ever solve racism or attain true racial harmony if our response is to utilize the full force of the state each time something like this happens?

I say: always be careful if you advocate for more state intervention in terms of punishment, because today it may be someone else who said something ‘wrong’; tomorrow, when societal conditions and/or the state change, it may be your turn.

Shuqun Sec: Bully Counselled, Deeply Regrets His Actions

Shuqun Secondary School has investigated a viral video which shows their male student hitting and slapping other students in class, and said that he has been counselled and “deeply regrets his actions”.

In a video posted on the Facebook page of All Singapore Stuff on Monday (Sep 21) at 9.17am, a male student is seen hitting the head and face of another male student who was seated at his desk. Music can be heard playing the background and the victim did not react.

The alleged bully then took a book and hit the victim repeatedly on the head and did the same to another male student seated nearby. Both victims kept their heads down and did not retaliate.

All of the boys were wearing T-shirts that identified them as students of Shuqun Secondary School in Jurong.

Another male student is seen dancing on top of the teacher’s table while this was happening. No teacher was seen in the video.

The clip has been watched more than 152,000 times as of 3pm on Monday.

    STUDENT ‘DEEPLY REGRETS’ HIS ACTIONS

When contacted by Channel NewAsia, Shuqun Secondary School said it “has investigated and is counselling the students involved”. “What might first begin as playfulness could potentially end up hurting others. The student involved has been counselled and he deeply regrets his actions.”

The school also said that it will “continue to work with the students involved on observing appropriate boundaries and behaviour in the future”. The parents of the students involved have been informed of the actions taken by the school.

Shuqun Secondary added: “The school takes all incidents of bullying seriously and has anti-bullying programmes to educate our students and dedicated Character and Citizenship Education lessons to help our students deal with such incidents.”

The school also confirmed that a teacher was present in class when the incident occurred. “The subject teacher was on childcare leave. There was an adjunct teacher in class when the incident happened last Friday. The school has since spoken to the teacher,” Shuqun Secondary said.

In a statement, the Ministry of Education (MOE) also said that it takes “a serious view of bullying in schools and does not condone such behaviour”.

“Schools will investigate and follow up on all cases of ill-discipline and bullying, and will provide counselling and guidance to the students involved,” an MOE spokesperson added.
