  • Taxi Driver Hit By Car Said He Couldn’t Have Avoided It

Taxi Driver Hit By Car Said He Couldn’t Have Avoided It

Taxi driver Jin Lian Cheng was driving on the fast lane of the AYE early yesterday morning when he had the shock of his life.

He saw the bright lights of another car as it sped straight at him.

He did not have any time to react and crashed into it.

”There was no way I could have avoided it,” Mr Jin, 54, told Lianhe Wanbao from his hospital bed.

”I don’t know why the red car suddenly came from the opposite direction.”

The accident at about 6am  near the south Buona Vista exit of AYE going towards Changi Airport, caused an eight-vehicle pile-up involving a motorcycle, lorry, two cars and four taxis.

There was a two-hour traffic jam afterwards.

Mr Jin had just picked up his first passenger at 5.30am and was taking the AYE for his regular drop-off at the airport when the accident happened in light traffic.

The cabby, his passenger, who is in his 30s, and the driver of the car, 63, were among the people taken to the National University Hospital (NUH) for treatment.

Mr Jin said he turned around after the accident and saw that his passenger’s head was bleeding. The cabby narrowly missed being blinded in the left eye after shards of glass from the windscreen hit his face.

He received eight stitches at the corner of his eye, from a cut 2cm away from his eyeball.

He also tore his left knee ligament and got his right lung punctured.

He is still undergoing scans for his lungs to further diagnose the problem.

The driver of the red Honda Airwave was sent for surgery at the hospital after suffering undisclosed injuries. His family told Lianhe Wanbao that he should have been driving to Jurong to start work and they had no idea why he was driving against traffic.

  • Briton Charged Over F1 Track Invasion

Briton Charged Over F1 Track Invasion

The man who walked across the race track during the Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix was charged with committing a rash act yesterday.

No plea was taken from Briton Yogvitam Pravin Dhokia, 27, who is burly and about 1.85m tall.

He is accused of acting rashly to endanger the personal safety of the Formula One drivers involved in the race near Turn 13 along Esplanade Drive at about 9pm on Sunday.

Closed-circuit TV camera footage released hours after the race showed a man entering via a gap in the fence. He sauntered across the track and scampered to the other side when race leader Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari emerged from the turn. He then climbed back over the barrier.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Marshall Lim sought a short adjournment to finalise investigations. He said Dhokia may face fresh charges.

No one posted bail of $15,000 for him yesterday.

His bailor must be either a Singaporean, permanent resident or consular officer from the British High Commission.

Now unemployed, Dhokia said the bail sum was too high for him and that he had spent all his savings on tickets and did not have that kind of money. He was allowed to make one local phone call.

Asked by District Judge Ronald Gwee if the embassy had been informed, the prosecutor said “yes”.

A spokesman for the British High Commission in Singapore confirmed the arrest of a British national in Singapore.

He said: “We stand ready to provide consular assistance.”

Dhokia’s passport has been impounded. His case will be mentioned on Oct 6. If convicted, he could be jailed for up to six months and/or fined up to $2,500.

  • 28 Year Old Maid Jailed For Having Sex With Employer’s 14 Year Old Son

28 Year Old Maid Jailed For Having Sex With Employer’s 14 Year Old Son

A domestic worker has been jailed for 10 months for having sex with a minor half her age.

The 28-year-old Indonesian woman admitted on Monday to having sex with her employer’s 14-year-old son in a house on Sept 5. Neither party can be named due to a gag order.

A district court heard that the accused came to Singapore in late June this year and started work for the boy’s family on July 3.

At about 7pm on Sept 5, the boy was at home with the woman and another foreign domestic helper. His parents and his uncle had gone out.

The boy was showing card tricks to the woman when she tried to hug him but he moved her hand away.

Later, he went up to his room to put away the cards. About a minute later, the woman came into his room .

As he was sitting on a chair in front of the computer table, she came from behind and started kissing his cheeks and neck. He stood up and tried to walk to the door.

Before he could leave, she hugged him and began to remove her shorts and panties.

Shocked by what was happening, he did not resist. She then removed his clothes, took him to his bed and had sex with him.

When she heard the boy’s uncle had come home, she stopped.

He later told his father what had happened.

Urging the court to impose at least 10 months’ jail, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Lai cited aggravating factors such as breach of trust; unprotected nature of the intercourse; and said the woman was tested positive for Chlamydia trachomatis, a sexually transmitted disease.

He said it was reprehensible, regardless of whether the boy was eventually infected or not. It could have been sheer luck that he was not infected, but the fact remained that she put the boy at risk.

The woman, whose sentence was backdated to Sept 7, could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined for having sex with a person under 16 years old.

  • Disgusting Hygiene Conditions At Ang Mo Kio Giant Supermarket

Disgusting Hygiene Conditions At Ang Mo Kio Giant Supermarket

I saw your story on how a rat at their premises was ignored by Giant supermarket staff at Yishun. I have encountered bad hygiene conditions such as centipedes, flies, bee, other insects found at the premises and spoilt food items being sold at Giant located at Ang Mo Kio and have been informing NEA on this matter for the past two years.

Initially NEA claimed that they are taking this matter seriously but for the past few months, NEA has refused to take my complains seriously and told me that I should speak to Giant’s management directly on my concerns. I have spoken to Giant’s management before but they don’t seem too bothered about the lack of hygiene as when I return back to the store, I always see the same issues. I even tried speaking to the senior management of NEA and writing in to REACH to find out why NEA is not taking actions but NEA just don’t not want to clarify this matter thus I wonder why is NEA only acting as a middle man passing my complains to Giant instead of ensuring that they investigate and make sure that the public’s health is not endangered.
