  • Fight In 24-Hour Convenience Store At Geylang Lorong 19

Fight In 24-Hour Convenience Store At Geylang Lorong 19

It began with a man accusing another of bumping into him, escalated into an explosive argument and ended with the accuser hitting the other man’s head with two beer bottles.

Part of the incident, which occurred at a 24-hour convenience store near Lorong 19 in Geylang around 9.40pm on Sunday, was captured on video by a female shop assistant using her mobile phone camera.

The minimart manager, who wanted to be known only as Mr Liu, 49, told The New Paper yesterday that the assailant, who was a familiar face at the store, was buying cigarettes and soft drinks at the time.

Mr Liu’s female assistant had told him that the man, who wore a black T-shirt, was paying at the counter when an older man and a friend entered the store to buy cigarettes.

Suddenly, the first man loudly accused the older man of bumping into him and started swearing.

“The older man told him that he didn’t like what he was saying,” said Mr Liu in Mandarin.

As the argument became more heated, the first man suddenly grabbed two beer bottles and hit the older man’s head. The bottles did not shatter but blood started gushing from the victim’s head.

Mr Liu said: “The shop assistant told me that the blood just kept flowing, staining the older man’s white T-shirt. He was also unsteady and fell down once but he never hit back at the man in the black T-shirt.”

As the assailant continued spewing vulgarities, the victim shouted at his companion to call the police. When the assailant heard this, he phoned a friend and asked to him to go to the store, said Mr Liu.

    STUNNED

Meanwhile, the victim’s friend blocked the door to prevent the assailant from leaving.

Alone in the shop with three angry men, the shop assistant was too stunned to do anything.

“She told me that she didn’t see the victim bump into the other man,” said Mr Liu.

When the shop assistant tried to record the attack on her mobile phone, the assailant threatened her.

Mr Liu said: “He shouted at her to stop or he would call people to go to the shop every day to harass her.”

When Mr Liu arrived at the minimart around 10pm, the police were already there and four or five people were milling around outside.

“The assailant’s friend was outside and didn’t enter the store,” he said.

Mr Liu said that when the assailant saw the police, he sat on the floor and said he felt faint. But he declined to be taken to hospital, said a Singapore Civil Defence Force spokesman.

The 43-year-old victim was taken conscious to Tan Tock Seng hospital in an ambulance, the spokesman added.

A police spokesman said they were alerted to the incident at 9.52pm.

A 34-year-old man was arrested for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons and means. Investigations are continuing.

Mr Liu estimated that the minimart lost about $1,000 in takings as a result of the incident.

He said the police were there for about three hours carrying out investigations.

“We spent an hour cleaning the shop after that,” added Mr Liu.

“Some items like the beer bottles next to the counter had blood (on them) and had to be thrown away. It wasn’t the first time a fight has happened but this is the worst so far.”

  • Guy Rages At Librarian After Being Told Not To Disturb Others, Librarian Resigns

Guy Rages At Librarian After Being Told Not To Disturb Others, Librarian Resigns

Stomper CK‘s wife, who is a librarian at Woodlands Regional Library, got into a dispute with a visitor that subsequently led to her resignation.

The incident occurred on Aug 30 at about 4.30pm.

According to CK, his wife had asked the man to use his handphone somewhere else in the library so as to not disturb other readers.

However, he was apparently not compliant and started shouting at the librarian.

CK said his wife filmed a video of the incident “as a deterrence” as she was afraid that the guy would lay his hands on her.

    Said the Stomper:

“A reader was asked to use his handphone at another area within the library so as not to disturb other readers. However, he started turning violent and kicking the entrance door.

“My wife feared that he would lay hands so she took a video as a deterrence. She had to tender her resignation because of this man.”

In the video, the man can be heard asking the librarian what her problem was and why she was taking a video.

He also said that he was not taking a picture of her and asked her why she was so sensitive.

  • SPF Refuse To Do Anything About PRC Couple Sleeping In Public Park

SPF Refuse To Do Anything About PRC Couple Sleeping In Public Park

A frustrated reader has sent us photos of a PRC couple who have made Somme Road park their unofficial home, despite her pleas to the Singapore Police Force (SPF) to do something about the foreign couple for the safety of the children living nearby. She has written 2 emails to the SPF but has the couple have yet to be “evicted” out of the park, and now the couple have even taken to sleeping and living in the children’s playground in the same park.
Read her 2 emails sent to the SPF and Ministry of Home Affairs here:
    Dear Sirs,
this same PRC couple sleeping in Somme road park and storing their garung gunitrolley and their cardboard, cans etc in the bushes. 3rd time already.
21 june 2015 was the first time the police were called.
    1) 2 previous times, police were called, police just looked at their ID and let them goscott free
    2) nothing was taken down, nothing ca be traced, nothing on record
    3) with the LAX attitude from our police force towards these PRs/new citizens, why would they even care to respect Singapore law?
Nparks officers were more proactive, but the Police seemed to be UTTER BO CHAP.
a very dissappoint born an dbred Singaporean

    Dear Sirs,
The police must have come since the sleeping couple have since moved from their original position and now they are sleeping inside the children’s slide in the playground.
Did the police even take down their details?
Because they do not seem to think they are doing anything wrong and this will be the4th time the police have been called re this sleeping couple.
What is happening to law and order in this country? especially towards nonSingaporeans? and or new citizens?

    Malah, sebaliknya pula berlaku.

  • Ang Mo Kio Murder Suspect Was Crying And Told Victim ‘I Love You’

Ang Mo Kio Murder Suspect Was Crying And Told Victim ‘I Love You’

She was among the morning crowd walking towards Ang Mo Kio MRT station at about 8am yesterday when she came across a shocking sight.

A man was lying on the floor of a covered walkway, bleeding profusely from his chest while another man was crying and sitting by his side.

Near them was a knife with a 20cm-long blade with blood on it.

Madam Connie Loh, a 61-year-old retiree, told The New Paper: “I heard him (the crying man) say in Mandarin, ‘Please I’m begging you, don’t let anything happen to you. I love you.’”

After a while, he lit a cigarette, tossed his lighter on the ground and started smoking, she added.

The man, who also appeared to be injured, was later arrested by the police. He was placed on a stretcher before he was taken away, Madam Loh said.

The victim, who had stab wounds on his arm and back, died in hospital.

TNP also understands he was Mr Tan Chin Siong, 48.

TNP understands that the suspect and the victim are not related.

The incident occurred at the covered walkway that runs from Ang Mo Kio MRT Station along the edge of the Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East park towards the Cheng San Community Club.

A cleaner, Mr Salauddin Habibulah, 29, said he was working at the void deck of Block 512, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, at about 8am when he heard a loud argument between two men at the nearby covered walkway.

He did not bother to check it out and carried on with his work.

    CURIOUS

When he later saw police cars parked in the area, curiosity got the better of him.

“When I went over to take a look, a man was lying on the floor and there was a lot of blood coming out from his chest,” he said.

Paramedics were tending to him as another man sat some distance away. Mr Salauddin also said that he saw a knife nearby on the floor.

A man who lives at a nearby block told TNP that he was exercising in the park when he heard a commotion.

When he got to the scene, a woman was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim before the paramedics arrived.

A resident at nearby Block 596, Madam H. H. Wong, 33, was on her way to work at around 8.05am when she saw police officers running.

Curious, she followed them and at the covered walkway near the Ang Mo Kio 3G Centre, she saw two men, one soaked in blood, surrounded by police and paramedics.

“At first, I thought that the two men were dead, but I realised that the other man was alive. He was lying dazed on the ground as paramedics checked him for injuries,” Madam Wong said.

Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported that the police cordoned off an area about the size of a football field, including the covered walkway and a section of the park.

When TNP reached the scene at 10am, the police were diverting pedestrians from the walkway, which residents use to get to the nearby blocks.

A police spokesman said the victim, a 48-year-old man, was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

A 39-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case and will be charged with murder today. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.

This is the third reported murder in less than a week.

In the first case in the early hours of Monday, a man was found dead in his Bukit Panjang flat and his wife has been charged with his murder.

On Thursday, a woman was found dead in a multi-storey carpark in Toa Payoh. A man was arrested and is due to be charged today with her murder.

Two ex-cops said that such a situation is extremely rare.

Mr Luke Lee, 62, a former police investigator who is now a lawyer, said: “I’ve never seen three murders in a week. In my division, we usually had murders once a month.”

Former detective Dave Chan, 68, who is now an operation executive at Fuji Trading Singapore, said: “In this era, it is rare to find three murders in a week.”
