    Raising Children To Not Hate

    Growing up in Kluang in the 90s, I never had much chance to go to the movies. I made up for my lack of cinema experience with VHS rentals; I would pass my father a list of sci-fi films and Japanese tokusatsu series to rent during school holidays.

    Internet and film reviews were not as accessible as they are now, so determining age ratings and whether they were suitable for kids were mostly left to luck and the fast-forward button. Up until now, I still have not watched Lawnmower Man, Johnny Mnemonic, and Demolition Man.

    But that was then. Nowadays, you can at least find out the age ratings of films through show lists in the papers. Those with access to the Internet can even find out exactly which scenes may not be appropriate for their children. As it is, film trailers already reveal much of the plot, sometimes too much.

    Therefore, it is baffling why Malaysian censors still resort to the archaic practice of censorship, even after giving age ratings. What is the point of giving the highest rating of 18, when the film still ends up cut anyway?

    The act itself reeks of masturbatory possessiveness: now that the censors have seen something they felt salacious, no way they would ever the let the public see it.

    Alas, the public will — through pirated VCDs and torrent files, or even legal streaming services — still see what they want to see. In the age of Internet, censorship is moot save for satisfying your self-righteous ego.

    It is as if they do not trust Malaysian parents to review which films are suitable for their children, and to have a family chat later explaining what puzzling things their kids may have seen. Because that is what responsible parents would do.

    The problem, however, lies with many parents who have little to no care for their own children, outsourcing the responsibility instead to the nanny State. Which is how we ended up with the Beauty and the Beast fiasco.

    There is nothing right with the Censorship Board’s decision to cut the so-called “gay moments”, even after slapping an age rating of 13 on the film. It is wrong not so much because it is not their job, it is wrong because it is blatant homophobia.

    Let me put this in context: the “gay moment” was nothing obscene. Nobody had sex, nobody even kissed. According to the Board’s chairman Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid, it involved a song with Josh Gad’s character Le Fou, identified by the makers as a gay man.

    “The way he dances is… gay and the dialogue and the lyrics of the song are too. In the same scene he also lifts up his shirt and shows a love bite on his tummy.

    “Even I wanted to bring my grandchildren to watch it. But there are rules. We don’t support LGBT,” Abdul Halim told news agency AFP, proudly declaring his homophobia, as he made up this rule about Malaysia not supporting LGBT.

    While Disney should be praised for its tough stance, I am not under the illusion it did so because of a pro-LGBT agenda.

    It is first and foremost a company, and it puts its money where the market is. And the market nowadays yearns for diversity and inclusivity, which is why there was a black man in the 2015 Cinderella remake. And now a gay man.

    But that is besides the point. Children should see gay characters in their films. They must be taught that gays exist, they are no different from heterosexuals, and should be treated the same.

    The world is changing. The next generation is no longer chained to obsolete ideas still held by old men who would force their beliefs on others. And us parents must take up this challenge to keep up.

    It warmed my heart to see a 15-year-old girl join the KL Women’s March last week. To be aware of feminism and women’s rights at such a young age, her parents did good. At 15 all I cared about were music and comics — the Kosovo War just flew right over my head.

    There was a photo of her holding a placard saying she cannot become a prime minister, because all people care about is her lack of tudung, or headscarf. The irony was, she was then attacked online by both men and women who have stood so long in the shadow of patriarchy for not wearing tudung. For bothering with feminism. For even daring to dream to be a prime minister.

    And that is the sad and terrifying state of our country right now, where women are being denied their rights, and when they speak up they just get kicked down again. As a parent and father, this is why I stand in solidarity with our fighting women, and why you should too.

    Because what we are up against is decades of indoctrination by a patriarchal society that banks on religion to legitimise their dominance. And of course, religion itself is lending them more credence than they deserve.

    Recently I participated in a forum organised by the MCA on the Bill to allow Shariah courts to impose harsher punishments. There, I had reminded the public of how our religious enforcers are oppressing our Muslim transgender citizens; just by stepping out of their doors, they are effectively committing a Shariah offence. Where is the dignity in that?

    I got labelled an “LGBT supporter” instead, as if that was a bad thing.

    But that is just because they are not aware, not bothering to understand that our understanding of gender and sex has advanced with science — that they are not binary between male and female, but rather a spectrum. It is much easier to let kids understand this.

    As parents, we can try to rid the world of bigotry. And that starts by teaching our kids not to hate. And to respect, and accept everybody for who they are.

    Disney Lodges Appeal On ‘Beauty And The Beast’ Ban In Malaysia

    KUALA LUMPUR: In a new twist to the ongoing Beauty and the Beast saga in Malaysia, Walt Disney has lodged an appeal with the Home Ministry about passing the film without cuts.

    But Malaysian Censorship Board (LPF) chairman Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid said: “Movie companies cannot impose conditions on LPF. We will not budge.

    “As far as I know, Disney has already sent a notice of appeal to the Film Appeal Committee under the Home Ministry, so now the decision of whether to release the film without cuts is up to them.”

    Yesterday, Malaysia’s Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz said Walt Disney was right in refusing to edit Beauty and The Beast, as he criticised the country’s censors for cutting a “gay moment” in the movie.

    “If you edit, the plot will not be the same any more,” Mr Nazri, who is also an MP with the ruling Umno party, said.

    Qari Malaysia Tarik Perhatian Warga Saudi Dengan Bacaaan Yang Lunak

    ARAB SAUDI: Meskipun orang Islam di Asia Tenggara sering merujuk kepada para ulama’ mahupun qari di Timur Tengah, namun tidak mustahil juga sekiranya perkara sebaliknya berlaku.

    Yang jelas, seorang warga Malaysia sudah berjaya menarik perhatian dan menawan hati mereka di negara-negara Arab dengan kemahiran beliau membaca kitab suci Al-Quran.

    Dalam tukilan laporan Al Arabiya, Mohamad Yusuf, yang berasal dari Kelantan, juga semakin menempa nama di kalangan warga Timur Tengah, terutama sekali di Arab Saudi.

    Dalam satu wawancara dengan Al-Arabiya.net, Yusuf berkata beliau sudah mula menghafaz Al-Quran sejak berusia enam tahun, setelah ayahnya mendapati beliau mahir menghafal ayat-ayat dari kitab suci selain mempunyai suara yang lunak.

    Ayahnya kemudian menyertakan Yusuf ke dalam kelas di masjid, di mana beliau lebih mempelajari tajwid serta hukum-hukum sebutan bagi bacaan Al-Quran.

    Pada usia 13 tahun, beliau sudah mendalami maqamat, iaitu cara melunakkan suara bagi bacaan kitab suci tersebut.

    Menurut laporan Al Arabiya, Yusuf sangat berterima kasih kepada ayah dan guru-gurunya atas sokongan dan dorongan mereka, yang banyak meningkatkan keyakinan dirinya.

     

    Malah, Yusuf berkongsi beliau turut menggemari bacaan Al-Quran daripada qari-qari seperti Sheikh Mustafa Ismail, Sheikh al-Shahat Mohammed Anwar, Sheikh Ahmed Naina dan Sheikh Yasir al-Sharqawi.

    Buat masa ini, Yusuf juga sedang menuntut di Fakulti Pengajian Islam di Universiti Sultan Ismail. Tahun lalu, beliau turut menjuarai sebuah musabaqah tilawah Al-Quran yang diadakan bagi universiti-universiti di Malaysia.

     

    Menjawab kenyataan-kenyataan bahawa qari-qari muda meniru-niru gaya bacaan mereka yang lebih berpengalaman, Yusuf berkata bahawa tidak salah untuk menggunakan teknik-teknik para qari terdahulu.

    Bagaimanapun, beliau turut menambah bahawa seseorang qari itu harus merancang dan membangunkan cara bacaan baru tersendiri.

    Menurut Al Arabiya lagi, Yusuf juga berkongsi bahawa beliau sedang berusaha keras untuk memperhalusi bacaannya dengan harapan untuk menjadi salah seorang qari yang dihormati

    Federal Territories Mufti: No Restrictions On Blood, Organ Donations Between Muslims And Non-Muslims

    There are no restrictions for organ donation and transplantation between a Muslim and a non-Muslim, said Federal Territories mufti Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri.

    He said this was because human organs were not Islamic or non-Islamic in nature but tools to support human life.

    “When an organ of a non-Muslim is transplanted into the body of a Muslim, the organ will become a part of the Muslim person’s body.

    “Then, the organ is used for its purpose as ordered by Allah,” he said in his Facebook page yesterday.

    Zulkifli said Islam decreed that the body of non-Muslim, which includes its organs and blood, always glorified and praised Allah and obeyed His commands.

    On blood donation from a non-Muslim who may have eaten non-halal food such as pork, Zulkifli said it was allowed in Islam because it was only the blood being transfused not the essence of the pork.

    He also shared the findings of the National Fatwa Council meeting on April 13 and 14, 1982 on blood donation and transfusion between a non-Muslim and a Muslim.

    Zulkifli said it had been ruled that blood donation was ‘harus’ (permissible) and there was no need to separate the blood of a non-Muslim and a Muslim.

    Mufti Perlis: More Important Issues At Hand For Muslims Than Implementation Of Shariah Laws

    PERLIS Mufti Datuk Dr Asri Zainul Abidin spoke bluntly at a recent forum on religion.

    “Gossiping is a big sin in Islam but are there (syariah) laws against gossiping? Do you see the religious authorities sending officers out to haul up those who gossip?’’

    He points out that while some things are haram (forbidden) and sinful in Islam, that does not mean that Allah demands for all of these to be punished in a court of law.

    In the case of adultery, for example, he says, if there are only three witnesses of good character present and not four as required by the religion, the adulterer would have to be let off.

    “Not all sins have to hauled up to court. The religion doesn’t ask us to go and check up on people, from room to room or car to car, asking for their surat nikah(marriage licence) to find out if they are married or not.’’

    Citing another example, he says, a powerful and rich person who commits a crime might be able to afford a good lawyer who cleverly argues the case and gets it thrown out of court.

    “But that doesn’t mean that because they got away with it in a court of law, they will get away with it in the Court of the Hereafter. God knows everything.

    “Muslims believe we will be tried for all our sins. Drinking alcohol, adultery, stealing are all sins. When we die, we will have to face God and answer for whatever we did. There is no escape.’’

    Dr Asri was speaking at the “How Much Do you Know About Hudud” forum organised by Angkatan Merdeka Malaysia.

    Touching on PAS president Datuk Seri Dr Hadi Awang’s motion before Parliament for the amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction ) Act 355 (popularly referred to as RUU355), Dr Asri said there are concerns it is all part of a political game.

    Dr Asri stresses that while the Quran and Sunnah (tradition of the Holy Prophet) are divine, the interpretations are not.

    He points out that while hudud (Islamic Penal Code) is mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah, it is not spelt out in great detail with regards to the context and conditions.

    So it was left to scholars to deliberate on these.

    “Scholars do not always agree so they have different interpretations of things. So which interpretation should you favour? These are not divine.’’

    On RUU355, Dr Asri says, the politicians supporting it keep saying it is not the hudud.

    “If it is not hudud, then surely we Muslims are allowed to criticise and give our views. So why is it that whoever criticises RUU355 is labelled as going against Islam? How is it that if you oppose the amendments you are said to oppose Allah’s Laws?

    “And what are Allah’s Laws? Does it mean that if you increase the penalty for an offence from RM5,000 to RM100,000 that it now becomes Allah’s Law?’’

    Dr Asri says even within the country, there are differences from state to state in the way Islamic matters, including polygamy, is dealt with, “so we must be very careful about calling something ‘Allah’s Law’.’’

    For him, discussion and debate are essential when looking into the dimension of punishment, because it is not only about implementation but also the conditions, the context, and suitability.

    He points out that in the Quran, there is a verse, Surah Al Anfal, which talks about the spoils of war and how they should be distributed, with fighters entitled to their share of them too. But he points out that this is not implemented today, because even though it is in the Quran, the wars of today are different from those in the early days; and soldiers now are paid salaries and allowances.

    “Defending the country is jihad (a noble struggle) but we don’t hear any political party in the country asking for a spoils of war law to be implemented because the context in today’s world is different.’’

    In a jibe at PAS, he says, “tens of years ago’’ they used to label other Muslims who were not with them as “infidels’’, they described the Federal Constitution as a “Jahiliyah” Constitution (Constitution of Ignorance) and warned Muslims against wishing non-Muslims during their religious festivals because for them that was tantamount to leaving the Muslim faith.

    But, he says, PAS has backpedalled now on what it said previously and today it says it upholds the Federal Constitution.

    “Allah’s Law should never be politicised. It is difficult when political parties come in and play a role in what they deem is Islamic law.

    “When religion is politicised, the discussion is no longer fresh and not the sort that can stimulate rational thinking and a healthy discourse.’’

    Dr Asri questions: Why do Muslims have a mentality that says, in order to be Islamic the hand of someone who steals has to be amputated?

    This kind of mentality is wrong, he says, adding that these kinds of Muslims understand Islam in a closed-off, secluded and non-holistic manner.

    “It is like the IS (Islamic State) mentality, where they think of only punishing and not about developing the place.’’

    For him, it is wrong to give the world the impression that justice in a Muslim country is served “when we cut off the hands of those who steal, whip those who commit adultery and punish those who drink alcohol’’ and that “this is what showcases the beauty of Islam’’.

    Dr Asri says Islam is all about better welfare for the people, spiritual development, strengthening family bonds, and ensuring peace and harmony in society.

    And he points out that the Government has already taken action to do a number of these, such as building schools and universities and giving people an education, which is something sought by the religion.

    He says there are many things which could have been brought before Parliament, such as how to inculcate the beauty and mercy of Islam into education and the economy.

    “But in tens of years in parliament, they (PAS) never even brought these up and focused instead on labelling other Muslims infidels, and having two imams during prayers (because they refused to be led in prayers by an Umno imam).”

    He points out that Muslim countries with renowned scholars such as Egypt, Kuwait and Qatar have never discussed implementing hudud, and countries like Pakistan, Sudan and Nigeria that tried to implement it have stopped, because in today’s world, people and conditions are different.

    He also says that in Islam there should never be double standards in implementing a law.

    “I fear that a person who steals a car will get his hand amputated but a nobleman who steals millions will not get his hand amputated.’’

    He questions what such a thing would do to the fabric of society and the image of Islam.

    Dr Asri says if a Muslim faces amputation for a theft and non-Muslims do not, that would not help create harmony and peace within society because there are two sets of laws for the same crime.

    He fears if such laws are enacted and implemented in an unjust manner, it will cause Muslims to leave the faith.

    “Muslims don’t need this right now.

    “There are many other issues that we should be looking into, such as the issue of good governance, the environment and corruption. We should also be looking at issues that help women, such as expediting divorce cases, because there are a number of cases where women in the midst of getting a divorce are left hanging for years without their cases being resolved. I think all these matters should be sorted out first otherwise people will feel that Islam is unjust to women.

    “For me, if the amendments to RUU355 are not going to result in good, let us postpone them and focus on our priorities.’’
