Taxi Driver Hit By Car Said He Couldn’t Have Avoided It

Taxi driver Jin Lian Cheng was driving on the fast lane of the AYE early yesterday morning when he had the shock of his life.

He saw the bright lights of another car as it sped straight at him.

He did not have any time to react and crashed into it.

”There was no way I could have avoided it,” Mr Jin, 54, told Lianhe Wanbao from his hospital bed.

”I don’t know why the red car suddenly came from the opposite direction.”

The accident at about 6am  near the south Buona Vista exit of AYE going towards Changi Airport, caused an eight-vehicle pile-up involving a motorcycle, lorry, two cars and four taxis.

There was a two-hour traffic jam afterwards.

Mr Jin had just picked up his first passenger at 5.30am and was taking the AYE for his regular drop-off at the airport when the accident happened in light traffic.

The cabby, his passenger, who is in his 30s, and the driver of the car, 63, were among the people taken to the National University Hospital (NUH) for treatment.

Mr Jin said he turned around after the accident and saw that his passenger’s head was bleeding. The cabby narrowly missed being blinded in the left eye after shards of glass from the windscreen hit his face.

He received eight stitches at the corner of his eye, from a cut 2cm away from his eyeball.

He also tore his left knee ligament and got his right lung punctured.

He is still undergoing scans for his lungs to further diagnose the problem.

The driver of the red Honda Airwave was sent for surgery at the hospital after suffering undisclosed injuries. His family told Lianhe Wanbao that he should have been driving to Jurong to start work and they had no idea why he was driving against traffic.

  • Massive 8 Vehicle Pile-Up At AYE Caused By Vehicle Moving Against Traffic

Massive 8 Vehicle Pile-Up At AYE Caused By Vehicle Moving Against Traffic

A massive 8 vehicle pile up early this morning caused a massive jam from Buona Vista to Yuan Ching along the Ayer Rajah Expressway this morning. The cause – a driver of a red Honda vehicle had been driving against traffic flow on the first lane of the expressway before he collided head on with a blue Comfort Delgro taxi

The impact of the crash left the front ends of the Honda and the taxi badly smashed, with the wheels of the taxi flung out by the impact. The rear end of the red Honda was also flattened from the impact with other vehicles, who could not veer in time to avoid the crash.

In total, 4 taxis, 2 cars, 1 lorry and 1 motorcyclist were involved in the accident.

Police confirmed that they received a call early this morning and dispatched emergency vehicles to assist. The 60 year-old Chinese man who drove the red Honda, along with 2 other casualties were conveyed conscious to the National University of Singapore Hospital.

Family members of the red Honda driver were shocked when told of what caused the accident. According to family members, the 60 year-old driver had left his home in Jurong at about 8AM in the morning and did not seem out of sorts. They did not believe that he had driven against traffic along the AYE as expressway speeds are high and very dangerous.

    Police are investigating the case.

  • Two Hit-And-Run Drivers Arrested

    Two Hit-And-Run Drivers Arrested

A 30-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of driving an Audi car that spun out of control in Simei Avenue on Tuesday morning – crashing into seven other vehicles and causing a 1½-hour jam along the three-lane road.

The driver, who has not been named, was seen running away from the scene after the 9.15am pile-up near the Institute of Technical Education College East campus.

A 65-year-old woman, a passenger in another car involved, suffered pain in her stomach and back after the accident and was warded at Changi General Hospital.

Police said yesterday that the accident “occurred when the driver of a silver saloon car failed to exercise proper control of his vehicle”.

The Traffic Police established his identity through “intensive investigations” and he was arrested in the vicinity of the National University Hospital. His driving licence will be suspended and police are continuing their investigations.

Witnesses said the driver had been speeding and was overtaking when his car collided with other vehicles and swerved towards the road divider. Mr Rajan Shirodkhar, 48, a vice-president of technology at OCBC Bank, said he was driving to work when the silver Audi hit the rear wheel and side of his car.

“His act yesterday (Tuesday) did not look like what any normal person would have done,” he said. “A fair trial should be held to see how we can be compensated fairly.”

Meanwhile, the police have arrested a 29-year-old man on Tuesday who was believed to have also fled on foot after causing an accident in Jurong Town Hall Road two weeks ago.

He had allegedly been driving a white Honda multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on the afternoon of July 31, when it collided with a motorcyclist, causing him to be flung onto the road.

The MPV then crashed into the rear of another car, causing it to jerk forward, hitting the rear of a van.

The motorcylist had to be taken to hospital.

“It was established subsequently that the MPV that caused the accident was affixed with a false number plate,” the police said.

The Traffic Police managed to identify the driver and arrested him in the vicinity of Hougang Street 21 for both traffic and drug offences, in a joint operation with the Central Narcotics Bureau.

Under the law, motorists involved in an accident in which a person or animal is injured, or where another vehicle or structure is damaged, have to stop their vehicles. They must also render the necessary assistance.

If the vehicle owner is not present at the scene, the motorist should take reasonable steps to inform him of the accident, such as by leaving a note on the damaged vehicle’s windscreen.

The motorist should also lodge a police report as soon as it is practical to do so and within 24 hours, unless he is able to establish contact with the vehicle owner.

The penalty for hit-and-run accidents is a fine of up to $3,000 or up to 12 months’ jail. Repeat offenders face a fine of up to $5,000 or up to two years’ jail.

Iron Fence Pierce Man Through Armpit, Man Survives

KLANG: A 68-year-old man had a lucky escape when the iron fencing rod he fell on narrowly missed his chest and pierced through his armpit.

Ng Ah Eng was pruning plants at his house compound in Jalan Alor Star, off Jalan Kapar, when the accident happened yesterday evening.

He was on a ladder but he slipped and fell on the fence, said Sungai Pinang fire station Senior Fire Officer II M. Sathiaseelan.

A neighbour called the Fire and Rescue Department at 4.40pm and a team reached the scene within five minutes.

“The fencing rods are solid iron but we managed to cut through three of them in 20 minutes,” said Sathiaseelan.

He revealed that the firemen did not pull the iron rod out from Ng as it would cause profuse bleeding.

“We sent him to hospital by ambulance with the impaled iron piece,” said Sathiaseelan.

Ng was rushed to the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah emergency unit for removal of the rod and subsequent treatment.
