47 Year Old Man Arrested For Making False Bomb Threat At Golden Mile Tower

A 47-year-old man was arrested yesterday for allegedly making a false bomb threat at Golden Mile Tower.

In the prank call made on Monday night, he had claimed that a friend who was about to travel to Kuala Lumpur by bus was a “terrorist with a bomb in his luggage”, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

His friend – a businessman, 47, who declined to give his name – said he received the call as he was about to board the bus from Golden Mile Tower.

The suspect told him he wanted to buy a bus ticket as well and asked him to hand the phone over to the ticket staff of the tour bus company.

Over the phone, the man allegedly told the staff member to “be careful” as his friend was a “terrorist from Dubai” who had a “bomb in his luggage”.

The 40-year-old employee later told a colleague to stop the businessman from boarding and called the police in secret.

The businessman said he was confused as the staff refused to tell him why he could not board. He also said he suspected his friend was envious because he was going to Kuala Lumpur.

Police said they received a call at 9.59pm on Monday requesting assistance at 6001 Beach Road because of a bomb threat.

Officers arrived 10 minutes later, but found no bomb in the luggage.

The suspect was taken into custody yesterday morning under a breach of Prohibition Against False Threats Of Terrorist Acts.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to five years, and/or a fine not exceeding $100,000.

Indonesian Student Arrested For Sending Bomb Threats To SIA

JAKARTA — Jakarta Police today (July 8) said they had arrested a 21-year-old male student from a private university in Banten who had sent a bomb threat to Singapore Airlines, causing flight delays.

Ilham, a senior college student reportedly majoring in information technology, was apprehended yesterday at his home in the Baleria housing complex in Tangerang, Banten after sending an email containing a bomb threat to Singapore Airlines on July 1.

“Because of the terror, there were three flights (from Singapore’s Changi International Airport), delayed for a while,” said Brigadier General Victor Edison Simanjuntak, chief of Jakarta Police’s economic crime unit, today.

According to Brig Gen Victor, Singaporean authorities tracked the source of the email and contacted the Indonesian police force.

The information technology and cybercrime unit of the National Police conducted an investigation that led to Ilham’s arrest.

“We are still investigating his motives,” Brig Gen Victor said.

The police intend to charge Ilham with article 335 of the criminal code and article 45 of the 2008 Law on Information and Electronic Transactions. The student faces a maximum ten years’ imprisonment.

When contacted, Singapore Airlines told TODAY: “As the matter is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, we are unable to provide further details.”

White House Press Room Evauated Briefly After Bomb Threat

WASHINGTON — Secret Service officers on Tuesday evacuated the White House briefing room “as a precaution” after Washington police received a bomb threat by telephone at 1:53 p.m. specifically concerning the room, Secret Service officials said.

The evacuation was limited to the briefing room and did not affect any other sections of the White House, the Secret Service said. Tourists were also moved away from the North Lawn to the far side of Lafayette Square.

Journalists and White House officials first gathered just outside the West Wing, and were then told to assemble inside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is across from the West Wing.

After a short time, the news media was allowed back into the briefing room.

Earlier on Tuesday, multiple floors of the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill were evacuated and one entrance closed after the Capitol Police received a call reporting a suspicious package in one room. The building was reopened a little while later. At the same time, Capitol Police responded to a report of another suspicious package at the Russell Senate Office Building, which turned out to be an unattended cooler.
