3 Britons Face Charges Of Raping A Singaporean Woman

Three Britons accused of gang raping a woman in Singapore while visiting the city-state for a music festival face up to 20 years in jail and caning, court documents showed Thursday.

Khong Tam Thanh, 21, Le Michael, 23, and Vu Thai Son, 23, face one count each of raping a 23-year-old local woman in a hotel in the early hours of September 10.

According to charges seen by AFP, the three men allegedly took turns in raping the woman between 4:00am and 5:50am in a hotel room near the upmarket Orchard Road shopping belt.

They appeared via video-link from Changi Prison on Thursday and were offered bail of Sg$50,000 ($36,400)each. All were represented by lawyers in court.

Khong’s lawyer Shashi Nathan told AFP that his client, a London-based businessman in the beauty industry, was in town for Ultra Singapore, an electronic music festival.

The men were charged with the offences on September 12 and have been held for investigations and a psychiatric review.

Nathan said Khong had a bailor and was expecting to be released later Thursday after proceedings are completed.

Le and Vu’s lawyers said in court that their clients had trouble raising funds, asking that bail be lowered. The request was turned down.

Rape is punishable by up to 20 years in jail and caning, a punishment which dates back to British colonial rule in Singapore.

The men will next appear before the court on November 22.

  • Briton Charged Over F1 Track Invasion

Briton Charged Over F1 Track Invasion

The man who walked across the race track during the Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix was charged with committing a rash act yesterday.

No plea was taken from Briton Yogvitam Pravin Dhokia, 27, who is burly and about 1.85m tall.

He is accused of acting rashly to endanger the personal safety of the Formula One drivers involved in the race near Turn 13 along Esplanade Drive at about 9pm on Sunday.

Closed-circuit TV camera footage released hours after the race showed a man entering via a gap in the fence. He sauntered across the track and scampered to the other side when race leader Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari emerged from the turn. He then climbed back over the barrier.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Marshall Lim sought a short adjournment to finalise investigations. He said Dhokia may face fresh charges.

No one posted bail of $15,000 for him yesterday.

His bailor must be either a Singaporean, permanent resident or consular officer from the British High Commission.

Now unemployed, Dhokia said the bail sum was too high for him and that he had spent all his savings on tickets and did not have that kind of money. He was allowed to make one local phone call.

Asked by District Judge Ronald Gwee if the embassy had been informed, the prosecutor said “yes”.

A spokesman for the British High Commission in Singapore confirmed the arrest of a British national in Singapore.

He said: “We stand ready to provide consular assistance.”

Dhokia’s passport has been impounded. His case will be mentioned on Oct 6. If convicted, he could be jailed for up to six months and/or fined up to $2,500.

SINGAPORE – A MOTORCYCLIST who punched and shattered the window of a Volkswagen in a road rage incident on Nov 16, was sentenced to three weeks’ jail yesterday. But Briton James George Palin (right), 33, is appealing against the sentence and is out on $15,000 bail.

The former regional director of a recruitment company, riding on his motorcycle on Tanjong Katong Road, had hit the bumper of a car driven by legal officer Chiang Pak Chien while overtaking him.

Mr Chiang, 43, who was with his girlfriend, Valerie Tan Hsu Phen, 42, overtook Palin, who had not stopped his motorcycle. Palin sped past him again and braked immediately in front of the car.

Mr Chiang slammed on his brakes to avoid crashing into the motorcycle and told his girlfriend to call the police. This was when Palin walked over to the driver’s side and punched the glass, which shattered over the couple.

    Palin fled on his bike.

Both Mr Chiang and Ms Tan, who are now married, each suffered cuts on their body, face, neck, arms and legs, and were both given a week’s outpatient leave. Ms Tan, who saw a psychiatrist, was diagnosed with acute stress disorder with severe anxiety. She avoids the Tanjong Katong stretch of road where the incident happened, and gets anxious and has palpitations when she sees “aggressive looking” motorcycles, according to a psychiatric report.

Palin’s lawyer Shashi Nathan said his client claimed that the car had bumped into his motorcycle.

Palin regretted what he had done, and had offered to pay for the couple’s medical expenses and for the damage to the car, an offer which they had turned down.

District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim said Palin’s reaction was excessive and totally disproportionate, and agreed with the prosecution that there should be a jail term. Palin could have been jailed for up to one year and fined up to $5,000 for causing hurt by doing a rash act to endanger the personal safety of others.
