20 ITE West Students Arrested After Fight Over Molest Claims

It began with an accusation of molest and ended with two groups of students fighting near a construction site at Choa Chu Kang.

Punches were thrown and kicks were traded.

In the end, the 20 Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students were rounded up and arrested after the father of one of them called the police.

The group of 19 males and one female, aged 16 to 23, were hauled to court for charges involving unlawful assembly with the intention to cause hurt.

Since June this year, 18 have pleaded guilty and were given warnings and probationary sentences ranging from 15 to 24 months.

Of the remaining two, Muhammad Zuhairi Jumahat, 17,was convicted yesterday and will be sentenced on Oct 24.

The last person, Ridhaudin Ridhwan Bakri, 22, is pending a High Court trial for gang rape.

It all started on Feb 2, when a female ITE College West student told Muhammad Shaffil Mohd Nooh, 19, that a classmate had touched her buttocks the day before.

    CONFRONT

Shaffil, also a student of the same school, gathered five other students to confront the boy.

At about noon the next day, they approached Muhammad Fahmy Zuraimi, 16, in school and took him to a male toilet to question him about the alleged molest.

Court documents said the gang was angered by Fahmy’s arrogance and took turns punching and kicking him for about 10 minutes as he fell. They then left.

Fahmy, who suffered a blood clot near his left eye from the fight, told his best friend Muhammad Hafiz Rosli, 17, about the attack.

They decided to exact revenge on the group and Hafiz rounded up a gang of 12 to help avenge his friend.

They arranged to meet the first group to settle the issue at Teck Whye LRT station the next day.

On Feb 4 at around noon, four members of the initial six met them at the station, but they decided to take the matter elsewhere after spotting some ITE staff there.

They headed to the construction site of executive condominium complex Sol Acres, along Choa Chu Kang Grove, near ITE College West.

But before they reached the site at around 12.30pm, some members from the group looking to avenge Fahmy attacked the four, kicking and throwing punches, while the rest looked on.

Three of them suffered multiple injuries such as bruises, abrasions and minor injuries to their heads.

The bigger group then headed back to the LRT station intending to meet the remaining members, but they did not turn up.

The New Paper understands that a police report was never made against Fahmy for the alleged molest.

Dr Goh Mong Song, principal of ITE College West, said in a statement regarding the incident: “ITE takes a serious view on, and will not tolerate breach of college rules and discipline by students, in or outside college premises.

“Three of the students involved have since left the college.

“Disciplinary action has been taken against the others.”

  • Fight In 24-Hour Convenience Store At Geylang Lorong 19

Fight In 24-Hour Convenience Store At Geylang Lorong 19

It began with a man accusing another of bumping into him, escalated into an explosive argument and ended with the accuser hitting the other man’s head with two beer bottles.

Part of the incident, which occurred at a 24-hour convenience store near Lorong 19 in Geylang around 9.40pm on Sunday, was captured on video by a female shop assistant using her mobile phone camera.

The minimart manager, who wanted to be known only as Mr Liu, 49, told The New Paper yesterday that the assailant, who was a familiar face at the store, was buying cigarettes and soft drinks at the time.

Mr Liu’s female assistant had told him that the man, who wore a black T-shirt, was paying at the counter when an older man and a friend entered the store to buy cigarettes.

Suddenly, the first man loudly accused the older man of bumping into him and started swearing.

“The older man told him that he didn’t like what he was saying,” said Mr Liu in Mandarin.

As the argument became more heated, the first man suddenly grabbed two beer bottles and hit the older man’s head. The bottles did not shatter but blood started gushing from the victim’s head.

Mr Liu said: “The shop assistant told me that the blood just kept flowing, staining the older man’s white T-shirt. He was also unsteady and fell down once but he never hit back at the man in the black T-shirt.”

As the assailant continued spewing vulgarities, the victim shouted at his companion to call the police. When the assailant heard this, he phoned a friend and asked to him to go to the store, said Mr Liu.

    STUNNED

Meanwhile, the victim’s friend blocked the door to prevent the assailant from leaving.

Alone in the shop with three angry men, the shop assistant was too stunned to do anything.

“She told me that she didn’t see the victim bump into the other man,” said Mr Liu.

When the shop assistant tried to record the attack on her mobile phone, the assailant threatened her.

Mr Liu said: “He shouted at her to stop or he would call people to go to the shop every day to harass her.”

When Mr Liu arrived at the minimart around 10pm, the police were already there and four or five people were milling around outside.

“The assailant’s friend was outside and didn’t enter the store,” he said.

Mr Liu said that when the assailant saw the police, he sat on the floor and said he felt faint. But he declined to be taken to hospital, said a Singapore Civil Defence Force spokesman.

The 43-year-old victim was taken conscious to Tan Tock Seng hospital in an ambulance, the spokesman added.

A police spokesman said they were alerted to the incident at 9.52pm.

A 34-year-old man was arrested for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons and means. Investigations are continuing.

Mr Liu estimated that the minimart lost about $1,000 in takings as a result of the incident.

He said the police were there for about three hours carrying out investigations.

“We spent an hour cleaning the shop after that,” added Mr Liu.

“Some items like the beer bottles next to the counter had blood (on them) and had to be thrown away. It wasn’t the first time a fight has happened but this is the worst so far.”

  • Malaysian Police Say Low Yat Riot Sparked By Clear-Cut Theft Case

Malaysian Police Say Low Yat Riot Sparked By Clear-Cut Theft Case

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – The events that escalated into a brawl at Kuala Lumpur’s Low Yat Plaza on Sunday started from a clear cut case of theft, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He said two men were arrested at 7.50pm on Saturday – one suspected of stealing a phone at a kiosk inside the mall and the other his accomplice.

He said the two were caught by staff of the phone shop, Oppo Malaysia, and handed to the security guards who later called the police.

Khalid said the suspected thief was detained in the lock-up while the accomplice was released at the discretion of the investigating officer who did not refer the matter to his superior.

“This suspect (accomplice) then made up stories to his friends and said that Oppo (staff) cheated them but, in truth, they stole the phone from another kiosk and not Oppo,” Khalid told reporters at Low Yat Plaza in the Bukit Bintang shopping belt after visiting the mall on Monday.

“According to the accomplice, he has a receipt of the purchase but when we checked, it was not true.

“He also claimed that he filed a report with us but when we checked our system, there is none. He is a cheat. So please stop spreading false news,” Khalid said.

Khalid said police had also called the Oppo staff to assist in the investigations.

Police have arrested 19 people, ages 19 to 26. All were remanded for four days starting Monday.

Khalid said police would monitoring social media postings that could spark racial disharmony.

On Saturday, a fight erupted between the thugs and sales assistants after a group of youths came to the shop on the ground floor at Low Yat Plaza.

This led to another group of about 100 people who started a brawl at the plaza at 6.30pm on Sunday.

The group had gathered to protest what they claimed was “biased investigations” by the police.

Khalid said police have already arrested 19 people between the ages of 19 and 26. They will be remanded for four days starting Monday.
