Independent Candidate Tan Lam Siong Now Joins SPP To Contest Chua Chu Kang GRC

Independent candidate lawyer Tan Lam Siong announced that he will give up contesting in a 3-corner fight with Potong Pasir SMC and join the People’s Power Party (PPP) to contest in Chua Chu Kang GRC.

Coincidentally, the former secretary general for the National Solidarity Party (NSP) is joining another former NSP sec-gen, Goh Meng Seng, who created his own political party PPP this year.

The good news is Singapore People’s Party NCMP Lina Chiam will have a direct contest with a weak PAP candidate Seetoh Yih Pin over Potong Pasir SMC. In the last election, NCMP Lina Chiam lost by only 114 votes and she is poised to win Potong Pasir SMC given the increasingly bitterness of ground sentiments against the ruling PAP party.

  • Goh Meng Seng: If Private Sector Can Accept Employees Wearing Tudung, Why Not The Public Sector?

Goh Meng Seng: If Private Sector Can Accept Employees Wearing Tudung, Why Not The Public Sector?

I do not understand why Tudung is such a difficult issue.

I believe most Chinese like me are used to seeing our fellow Malay ladies wearing Tudung in our lives, in our working places and on the streets or neighbourhood.

It is nothing intimidating at all and it should be a proud Heritage of our multi ethnicity and culture. Local born Singaporeans do not feel uneasy with Tudung ladies because we understand and respect their dress code. This is nothing special just like seeing our fellow Sikh brothers wearing turbans.

So stop talking about difficulties or social acceptance of such. If private sectors have no problem about tudung why should the Government has any problem with that?

  • Goh Meng Seng: Possible For Two Opposition Parties To Join Forces

Goh Meng Seng: Possible For Two Opposition Parties To Join Forces

Members of various Opposition parties gathered at the home of Singaporeans First (SingFirst) secretary-general Tan Jee Say on Saturday evening (Aug 1) for an informal discussion on how they could “work together” in the upcoming General Election.

Veteran Opposition politician Goh Meng Seng, chief of the recently formed People’s Power Party (PPP), told reporters after the gathering that having two Opposition parties join forces to contest constituencies is a “possibility”.

He also alluded to Opposition parties’ interest in constituencies in the West. “Personally, I think the West is a good ground. In the past, it has been very receptive. It has been neglected for about 10 to 20 years,” he said, adding that the western part of Singapore was an Opposition “hotbed” in the 80s and 90s.

Mr Goh said the meet-up had been planned before the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report had been released. He described the discussion as “just a sharing of ideas” and said no consensus was reached.

Prior to Saturday’s gathering, the head of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Benjamin Pwee told the TODAY newspaper that six Opposition parties would be represented there – SingFirst, Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), Singapore People’s Party, NSP, PPP and DPP. However, SDA clarified on Facebook that it was “not aware of the meeting” and would not be attending. NSP also said in a Facebook post that its party president and secretary-general would not be at the gathering.

Mr Goh said some of the Opposition party leaders were not present, but that party activists were, while Mr Tan said “more than half” of the Opposition parties were represented.

DPP adviser Seow Khee Leng who was at the meeting said the parties discussed contesting in Ang Mo Kio, West Coast and Jurong GRCs. He echoed Mr Goh’s comment that Opposition parties could join forces to contest in the coming General Election. When pressed for details, Mr Seow said this would be fleshed out in Monday’s horse-trading meeting.

  • Goh Meng Seng: Workers’ Party Should Contest Fewer Seats

Goh Meng Seng: Workers’ Party Should Contest Fewer Seats

While I know most of my haters and detractors here are mainly WP supporters, but I would like to put this perspective forward to you.

WP has apparently taken more than what it could chew. Sylvia Lim has admitted that the management of WP’s Town Council is far from good as mistakes have been made. It is only wise for WP to focus on its current turfs of 7 seats, fortify themsevles further instead of going into expansion mode and step into other unfamiliar turfs.

I do not wish to see WP losing its current seats just because of its unwarranted ambition to win more seats. And I do not think WP can convince voters that it could manage ADDITIONAL constituencies well when it is currently struggling with the present 7 constituencies’ municipal management. WP may risk a total collapse of credibility if it won more seats but in the end TC management become a horrible nightmare. This will in return destroy WP totally by the elections after next.Stay focus on the current 7 seats will be its best strategy. I believe LTK will want to fortify his positions in these current seats instead of having the ambition to win even more seats.

Having said that, it would be natural to expect WP not to contest more seats than it has done before. In fact, it should be contesting less seats instead.

So I do not expect to have problems in multi-corner fight, especially with WP as long as they are rational and not that greedy or overly ambitious unless WP has other agendas which are not about winning more seats but disruption of other party’s chances of winning seats and growing the pie of opposition presence in parliament.

I am pretty optimistic that we have people with very rational and responsible heads in WP who would put the overall development of democracy for Singapore as top priority over party’s interests.

  • Goh Meng Seng: My People’s Power Party Has Been Officially Registered

Goh Meng Seng: My People’s Power Party Has Been Officially Registered

The People’s Power Party (PPP) has officially been registered, said its head Goh Meng Seng on Thursday.

This means that its candidates can contest on its ticket in the next general election, which must be held by January 2017.

Mr Goh, an opposition veteran who was formerly from the National Solidarity Party (NSP) and the Workers’ Party (WP), said: “I am glad to announce that Registrar of Societies has been quite efficient this time round and our registration of People’s Power Party has been approved.”

Mr Goh applied to register the PPP in early May.

He told The Straits Times at that time that the PPP will champion greater separation of powers and a more active role for the President.

It will also advocate a less “lopsided” development approach for Singapore, said Mr Goh, focusing not so much on economic growth but more on achieving a better balance in social, cultural, political and economic growth.
