Halimah Yacob Does Not Confirm Running For Elected Presidency

With eight constituencies and many invitations from different organisations to break fast, Madam Halimah Yacob said her days have been packed all the way till Hari Raya, and time with family has been hard to come by.

The mother of five children, all in their 20s and 30s, said she is thankful her family “accepts” her schedule.

“I’ve broken fast at home on only a few days, all the rest of the days have been out,” she said.

She was quick to add that she does enjoy breaking fast outside, particularly with her residents.

Madam Halimah said that sometimes she does not even have time to have a proper meal between events.

During such moments, she shared that she slips into nearby mosques “incognito”.

“The good thing is that every mosque here provides something to eat, so it’s quite interesting to break fast and then perform my maghrib (evening) prayers before I go off to my event,” she said.

In 2015, on Polling Day, Madam Halimah’s mother died as she was doing her rounds. This year will be the second Hari Raya that she will be celebrating without her, but it never gets easier.

Said Madam Halimah: “What I miss about mum is her presence. Sitting there, she used to sit on the sofa, just having her there would mean tremendous comfort because she’s been the pillar of strength for me all the while.”

Hari Raya is not just a time to celebrate family, but to also remember the loved ones lost, as she pointed out.

With a laugh Madam Halimah said: “I cook lontong for breakfast every Hari Raya morning. So the children have asked me this year if I am going to cook and I told them I will see how.

“But no lah, I will make it this year, every year I will cook it.”

Other than lontong, Madam Halimah is looking forward to having time for herself this festive weekend.

“That’s the wonderful thing about Hari Raya, at least the first two days will be off limits,” she said.

When asked if she sees herself becoming busier in the future, on account of the upcoming presidential election which she is widely rumoured to be considering, Madam Halimah laughed, reiterating that she had a lot on her plate.

“I’ve been very busy actually. My time is really packed and, of course, in Parliament as Speaker the last few years have been very packed,” she chuckled.

“Our Members of Parliament have been pretty active filing motions and so on, so that has kept me pretty busy.”

  • “Asyik Bersembang Pakcik Dan Makcik… Hai Duit Raya Lupa Nak Diberi”

“Asyik Bersembang Pakcik Dan Makcik… Hai Duit Raya Lupa Nak Diberi”

Lagu Suasana Hari Raya dari Anuar Zain dan Elyana, ada satu part ni “Asyik Bersembang Pakcik Dan Makcik… Hai Duit Raya Lupa Nak Diberi.” Actually kalau lupa tu takpe jugak, tapi kalau deliberately cakap nak kena datang rumah tu, hmmm… Macam Bonda Bedah cakap:

    ***

Aku tak paham orang kalau beraya cakap dengan budak-budak, “Ah cik tak bagi duit raya eh! Nak duit raya, mesti datang rumah baru cik kasi!”

Berapa sangat lah duit raya kau tu… Tak baik. Budak setahun sekali jumpa, apalah salahnya kasi duit raya on the spot.

Toksah cakap macam tu semua. Itu anak orang kau buat!

And lagi satu, tak payah tanya budak dah sekolah ke dah kerja. Kalau niat nak bagi, bagi je. Tak payah soalan demi soalan. Kalau budak tu masih sekolah tapi kerja part time macam mana? Hah!

Eh kalau orang Cina, selagi orang tu belum kahwin, selagi tu dia dapat red packet tau! Walaupun orang tu dah tua bangka! Kalau masih andartu, masih bujang trang tang tang, masih dibagi! Kita ni setahun sekali nak bagi zakat, banyak spelling!

  • Who Are These Multiracial Band Of Brothers? And Where Is The Presidential Candidate?

Who Are These Multiracial Band Of Brothers? And Where Is The Presidential Candidate?

A mystery contender – described as a Malay/Muslim man in his 60s and the chairman of a multinational company – is planning to vie for the position of president.

Four of his friends turned up on Friday (June 16) at the Elections Department to collect application forms for the coming presidential election on his behalf.

One of them, Future Energy Solutions director of administrative and business development Borhan Saini, said: “We believe that our candidate is eligible to stand.”

To repeated questions on the new contender’s identity, Mr Saini would only offer sparse details: He is in early 60s, a chairman of a multinational company, and is currently based in Singapore.

Mr Saini added that he believed the potential candidate could win the support of “all races in Singapore”.

But he declined to give more information when pressed and would only say: “We are confident of that.”

He added that a press conference will be called after Hari Raya, in the first week of July.

Mr Borhan and his companions – who gave their names as Jimmie Wee, Rahman Kamin and Sukumaran, but declined to reveal more about themselves – had on Thursday sent an email to the media through an anonymous account. It stated that a “group of multiracial representatives” would be collecting documents for the upcoming presidential election.

Mr Borhan said on Friday: “We are from a multiracial group to support our candidate because the president is not just for Malays, but for (people from) all walks of life in Singapore”.

The group, he added, is not linked to any political party.

When asked why the candidate had not collected the forms himself, Mr Borhan would only say: “He’s not free today… he has some urgent matters.”

The upcoming presidential election in September is reserved for candidates from the Malay community, following changes to the elected presidency scheme approved by Parliament last year to ensure minority representation.
