Singaporeans Should Give Foreigner Samir Neji A Baptism Of Fire This GE

PAP just supported the 1st New Citizen GE2015 Candidate for Bukit Batok SMC – a first in Singapore if we did not consider PRC-affiliated Sun Xueling in Punggol Pasir Ris GRC under PAP.

Samir Salim Neji an independent, new Singapore Citizen from India is standing for Bukit Batok SMC against PAP incumbent and the SDP challenger.

Originally disqualified by the electoral officers as he lacked the required assentors, he managed to get into the election at the last minute with help from PAP’s generous foreigner integration team.

Not sure whether this is for the interest of Bukit Batok residents or for PAP to dilute the votes, especially after the mother of all pests outbreak incident at neglected Bukit Batok Hills where a huge rats infestation became a national concern.

New citizen Samir’s objective in this election is also not clear as he has a newly created pink IC and only received citizenship recently, so he probably has strong ties to India. Is he going to be the role model for future new citizens and other foreign talents to form their own political party to represent the different India Indians, Pinos and PRCs and more?

Was the interest of Bukit Batok residents, who just suffered and recovered from a rats nightmare, in any way a factor in the PAP integration committee’s support for Samir?

Definitely with this, more foreign talents and new citizens will take up politics and even form their own parties to represent their foreign interests.

    Majulah New Citizens!

  • New Citizen Samir Neji Don’t Deserve To Stand For Elections, He Is Not True Blue Singaporean

New Citizen Samir Neji Don’t Deserve To Stand For Elections, He Is Not True Blue Singaporean

Bukit Batok Independent Candidate Samir Neji is a FRAUD and should withdraw his candidacy.

As a resident and voter of Bukit Batok, I call on Mr Samir Neji to stop making a mockery of Singapore’s electoral process and withdraw his candidacy to give voters a chance to chose between two credible parties instead – parties that are run by Singaporeans for Singaporeans.

In the meantime, I am considering filing a police report over this matter

Bt Batok SMC now faces a three-cornered fight created by an independent candidate who sneaked in out of no where. Samir Neji comes from Kerala and has lived in Singapore for 15 years, making him a new citizen( his 15 years of stay here has not been verified yet though) . That aside, what is disturbing is the fact that he has absolutely no visible or verifiable grassroots or local civic involvement in Singapore to begin with. Absolutely NOTHING ! – and yet here he is standing as candidate to be an MP in parliament ! All that is known about him is that he owns a business and has a family here, but even his business ( Anaplan Asia Pte Ltd ) does not have a website and numerous calls to his office has been unanswered.

For the record, he came in very late on nomination day, just about 30 minutes before filing closed and without meeting the basic requirement of having four assentors with him. Nomination rules require that each nominee should have a proposer, a seconder and four assentors, whose names must appear in the register of electors for the constituency that the candidate seeks election in. It then transpired that supporters from one of the parties contesting in the same SMC, namely the PAP came forward to make up the requisite four assentors, thus ushering him into the election.

Surely, a candidate who takes his candidacy seriously would have read and understood the nomination rules. To come so ill-prepared and to have Assentors from another political party is akin to making a mockery of the electoral process .

Here is a new citizen, trying to springboard straight into parliament with a blank record as far as civic and grassroots involvement is concerned. This is in stark contrast to the incumbent party, the PAP and the opposition party (SDP in this case), both of which has worked the ground, has a manifesto on how to improve Singaporeans’ life as well as ample information about the party that is publicly accessible. Samir Salim Neji has absolutely NONE of this .

Singaporeans should be voting in candidates who will be their representatives and voice in parliament. By that token, the candidate must understand the aspirations, needs and psyche of Singaporeans. Samir Neji is a fraud and has no proven qualities to be an MP of Bukit Batok.

One facebook comment regarding this issue puts this in its proper perspective: ” Sonia Gandhi was not allowed to be PM as she was not born in India, but this joke is happening here . I am feeling so disgusted ”

From Facebook also : ” I thought only those born in that country can stand for elections. Alberto Fujimura was born in Peru and hence became their president but not him. ( Samir ) He did not serve NS and does not know the history of SG. Its make a mockery of our politics.”

Another facebook comment : ” But there are other dicey stuff emerging. ( about Samir Neji) .. by checking through LinkedIn it appears he’s the nightmare PAP created through their crap immigration policies. Found that the top posts in Anaplan Singapore are all Indians from his kampong.. all with qualifications from lousy source. So basically he’s hiring his own kind. Thats always the main strategy to game the system. If the core consists of true blue Singaporeans we would have called his bluff early … so must gang up with country mates. So country mates also use high position to apply for PR and citizenship. PAP allows foreigers to con us in our own country. He ( Samir Neji ) has not integrated,.. ”

As a resident and voter of Bukit Batok, I call on Mr Samir Neji to stop making a mockery of Singapore’s electoral process and withdraw his candidacy to give voters a chance to chose between two credible parties instead – parties that are run by Singaporeans for Singaporeans.

  • Tan Lam Siong: Respect For 100 Year Old Grandma Who Still Collects Cardbox Boxes

Tan Lam Siong: Respect For 100 Year Old Grandma Who Still Collects Cardbox Boxes

I saw her struggly to push her trolley of cardboards up the ramp at block 113 of Potong Pasir and moved to help her. In a jiff, she was rummaging through the dustbin behind the pillar in the void deck.

I squatted next to her as she was about to empty the contents of a paper box. I asked why she was collecting cardboxes. Her reply was that she needed to support herself. She lives alone in Punggol but collects cardboxes and old clothes from Lorong 8 Toa Payoh to Potong Pasir every day from morning 6am to night 9pm. When I asked her for her age, I could not believe her answer. She is 99 and turning 100 next April. She is undoubtedly the oldest collector of carboards in Singapore.

Her eyesight and hearing are still good but her body is permanently arched as a result of constantly bending down to collect cardboards. She has been doing this for many, many years. Her 3 children have left her and are no longer in touch with her. She has a grandson, abandoned by his parents and cared by her since young, who is in national service.

She makes about $20 a day, and sells about 150 kg of cardboards for a meagre $9. She is not receiving any financial help from the government as she finds it troublesome. She shares a one-room flat with a flatmate and pays her half share of the monthly rent which works out to about $200.

I shuddered at the thought that someone who is almost 100 years old, has to be collecting cardboards for a living and has not received any public assistance. My heart sank at the sight of her wrinkled hands and rugged fingers.

I asked for her permission to wheel her trolley around to get a feel of the weight of her trolley which was fully laden. When I pushed it back to her and asked where she will be wheeling it to, her answer startled me. She was going to wheel it to Lorong 8 in Toa Payoh and said that it will take her half an hour to do so.

Life has been really harsh to this grand old dame but she displays a resilience that puts everyone to shame. When she turns 100 in April, let’s celebrate with her. Granny Chung Siew Ching. Meanwhile, if you get to see her around Lorong 8 Toa Payoh and Potong Pasir, do buy her drink and food. Thank you.

I found a comment which is a follow up on Tan Kin Lian’s article Loss of Foreign Minister, which appears to give us an insight to what happened that caused Aljunied GRC to fall.

If what the writer claims is true (ie he has been working on the ground with the WP), this gives us an opportunity to see what were the goings on of WP’s plan, which was not seen by the public before.

    Here is his comment.

I happened to be one of those who’re familiar with WP Hougang and Aljunied groundworks and feedback. The decision to contest Aljunied was a foregone conclusion, it was just a matter of who joined Sylvia there. The boundary map was so drawn that Hougang is an island within Aljunied that incorporates about a third of old dismantled Cheng San. Hence PAP made Aljunied a must-contest for WP and believed George Yeo popular enough to defend it. However LHL compromised laymen perception of his foreign affairs competency by having LKY and GCT handling almost all the heavyweight foreign affair issues. As for grassroot groundworks and popularity of WP in Aljunied, PAP complacently forgot that Hougang is in Aljunied containing a huge chunk of Cheng San. The gerrymandering backfired this time. The LTK effect wouldn’t have been of this magnitude in another GRC where he’s not so well known. In any case, it was LKY himself who challenged LTK that if he’s a good leader, stop hiding in SMC, come out and contest GRC. And it was also LKY himself who pre-declared that by-election shall be held to save any minister lost.

Very interesting insight. For those who can’t recall, Cheng San was contested by the WP, headed by Tang Liang Hong in 1997. Tang Liang Hong was smeared by PAP as a Chinese Chauvinist. His team was the highest scoring losing team.

I agree that George Yeo’s position was highly compromised as foreign minister. One of the most difficult issues we had and still have is our relations with Indonesia.

We harbour Indonesian criminals which Indonesia wants extradited, as well as billions of ill-gotten funds that rightfully belongs to them. An extradition treaty that was to be signed between Indonesia and ourselves have been shelved and that is causing a lot of strained ties. I have discussed that in detail here – Our Bad Foreign Relations with Indonesia

It looks like WP had weighed carefully the options they had and decided to go for a calculated gamble. It paid off.
