Indonesian PhD Student Convicted For Outrage Of Modesty

An Indonesian PhD student was convicted on Tuesday of outraging a woman’s modesty on an MRT train.

Irfan Syanjaya, 26, had been taking the train from Buona Vista to Jurong East on Aug 12 last year, when he deliberately stood close behind the 20-year-old student to do so.

He was sentenced to six weeks’ jail following a two-day trial.

The court heard that although the train was crowded at first as it was the evening peak period, it grew more empty after leaving Dover station. Nevertheless, Irfan continued to stand close to the victim even though there was space to move away.

She confronted Irfan, who apologised. Other commuters came forward to help and he was detained by security officers at Jurong East MRT.

During the trial, Irfan, who was unrepresented, maintained that he had touched the victim accidentally.

He had admitted during police investigations earlier to intentionally touching her, but denied this in court.

When asked why he kept standing so close to her, he said through a translator: “She seemed to have no negative thoughts about me so I did not move away.

“I assumed she had no problem about me standing where I was.”

Three witnesses who had been in the same carriage testified that they had seen Irfan make deliberate contact with the victim, even after she tried to avoid him.

One, Ms Nur Sharida Md Farok, said Irfan was standing close enough to whisper into her ear.

Another, Mr Johan Tay, said it was obvious that he had been inching towards the victim. He said he had tried to stop it from happening by putting his bag in between Irfan and the victim, but that Irfan had persisted.

At the time, Irfan was doing a PhD in electrical and computer engineering at the National University of Singapore.

For using criminal force to outrage the victim’s modesty, Irfan could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or any combination of the three.

  • Maid Jailed 12 Years For Strangling 16 Year Old Daughter Of Employer

Maid Jailed 12 Years For Strangling 16 Year Old Daughter Of Employer

A domestic maid who strangled her employer’s 16-year-old daughter with the girl’s own school pinafore while the teenager was asleep, was on Monday jailed for 12 years.

Indonesian Tuti Aeliyah, 30, pleaded guilty in the High Court to one charge of culpable homicide for killing Shameera Basha Noor Basha, a Secondary 4 student at Tanjong Katong Girls’ School, on Nov 14, 2013.

Tuti was originally charged with murder, but the charge was reduced after she was diagnosed to be suffering from severe depression with psychotic symptoms at the time. Her mental condition was found to have significantly impaired her judgment.

The High Court heard on Monday that Tuti, who started working for the teen’s family of four in April 2012, was not abused or ill-treated by her employers.

But several months before the killing, she started behaving strangely. She lost weight, did not want to call home and cried frequently. Two weeks before the incident, she told a neighbour’s maid that she wanted to commit suicide.

She told a psychiatrist that the night before the killing, she tried to kill herself but failed.

The next morning, Shameera was still asleep and alone at home with the maid after her parents and brother left their Tampines flat. The maid claimed that while she was in the toilet, she saw a ghost which told her to kill the teenager.

At 8am, armed with a kitchen knife, she went into the teen’s room and tried to smother her with a pillow. After Shameera woke up and struggled, the maid stabbed her in the abdomen and chest. The maid then looped Shameera’s dark green pinafore around her neck a few times and pulled both ends until the teen stopped moving.

Tuti then drank half a capful of fabric softener, made superficial cuts on her wrist with a knife and tried to hang herself from from a toilet pipe but failed to kill herself.

Half an hour past noon, when the teen’s mother returned home, the maid told her employer that she had killed Shameera. Shocked, the 47-year-old woman sought help from a neighbour, who called the police.

  • Unhappy Indonesian Maid Pours Eucalyptus Oil Into Breast Milk To Scare Employers

Unhappy Indonesian Maid Pours Eucalyptus Oil Into Breast Milk To Scare Employers

Unhappy at being reprimanded by her employer, an Indonesian domestic worker poured some eucalyptus oil into two packets of breast milk to “scare” her.

The 28-year-old maid was scolded earlier on Aug 23 last year by her 34-year-old female employer for not having done the housework. She was unhappy and hoped the employer would terminate her work permit and repatriate her.

She found a bottle of eucalyptus oil and poured some of it into the breast milk. She sealed up the packets and placed them back in the outermost part of the refrigerator, knowing that her employer would likely to take them out first to feed her two-month-old baby boy.

On Tuesday, the accused pleaded guilty to attempting to administer an unwholesome thing to the baby, knowing it to be likely that she would cause hurt to the infant.

The maid is not being named to protect the identity of the victim.

A district court heard that her employer, a manager, would pump milk from her breast, store them in disposable packets and place them in the fridge. She would feed her baby with two to three packets every day.

The maid was left alone at home when she committed the offence. She was employed on June 2, about three months before.

When the family returned that evening, the victim’s mother pumped milk and was intending to top up the packets of breast milk when she opened the first packet and smelt a pungent odour.

Sensing that something was amiss, she decided to check the remaining five packets of milk in the fridge. Another packet had the same pungent smell.

Later that evening, the couple searched the maid’s belongings and found a bottle of PurerAire Eucalyptus oil placed on top of a cabinet. They opened the bottle and found that it had the same pungent smell as the packets of breast milk.

They called the police, who came and arrested the accused.

The accused, who was not represented, pleaded for leniency, saying she was remorseful and would not repeat the offence.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Delicia Tan sought a short adjournment to tender precedents.

The accused will be sentenced on Jan 15. She faces up to five years’ jail and a fine.
