    Singapore Detains First Woman For Radicalism Under ISA After She Planned To Join Islamic State

    The 22-year-old preschool teacher had been posting pro-ISIS material online since 2014 and was also looking for a terror supporter in Syria to marry.

    SINGAPORE: Singapore has detained its first female citizen for radicalism under the Internal Security Act (ISA), said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday (June 12).

    Syaikhah Izzah Zahrah Al Ansari, a 22-year-old contract infantcare assistant with the PCF (PAP Community Foundation) Sparkletots preschool programme, was detained in June this year.

    Her radicalisation started in 2013 through online propaganda related to the Islamic State terrorist group, said MHA.

    “She began to believe that ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) represented the true spirit of Islam. Her radicalisation deepened over time,” a press release read. “This was exacerbated by a wide network of foreign online contacts which she developed. They included ISIS militants and supporters, some of whom have either been killed in Syria or arrested for terrorism-related activities.”

    Since 2014, Izzah actively posted and shared pro-ISIS material online. Several of her social media platforms were removed by administrators because of such content, but she created new ones.

    MHA said Izzah was also intent on joining ISIS and was actively planning to make her way to Syria, with her young child, to do so.

    “She supported ISIS’s use of violence to establish and defend its self-declared ‘caliphate’, and aspired to live in it,” said the ministry. “To this end, she said that since 2015, she was looking for ‘a Salafi or an ISIS supporter’ to marry and settle down with him and her child in Syria.”

    “She said she would support her husband if he fought for ISIS in Syria as she believed she would reap ‘heavenly rewards’ if he died in battle. With her ‘elevated status’ as a ‘martyr’s widow’, she felt she could (then) easily marry another ISIS fighter in Syria.”

    Izzah also said she was prepared to undergo military training and engage in armed combat to defend ISIS if called upon by the terrorist group to do so, MHA added.

    Her sister and parents – who are both freelance Quranic teachers – came to know of her radical postings in 2015 and her intention to join ISIS in Syria. They did not alert the authorities and tried on their own to dissuade her, but were unsuccessful.

    Izzah continued down the path of radicalism, said MHA, and in April this year, “boasted” to a contact that the Singapore authorities had not detected her.

    In its press release, the MHA reiterated that importance of family members and friends to let the authorities know of anyone they suspect is being radicalised or planning terror attacks.

    Pihak Polis Siasat Bantahan Dalam MRT Yang Berlalu Pada Sabtu Lalu

    Aduan polis sudah dibuat terhadap bantahan yang diadakan di dalam kereta api pada hari Sabtu (3 Jun) dan pihak polis mengesahkan bahawa ia sedang menyiasat aduan tersebut.

    Bantahan itu diadakan bagi menentang penahanan yang berlaku 30 tahun lalu di bawah Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri (ISA).

    Pada Mei 1987, 22 orang ditahan di bawah Operasi Spectrum dan dituduh terlibat dengan pakatan Marxis untuk mewujudkan sebuah negara komunis.

    Menyusuli pelancaran sebuah buku pada bulan lalu oleh bekas tahanan bagi menandakan ulang tahun penahanan mereka, para aktivis mengadakan bantahan secara aman di Laluan Utara-Selatan dengan menutup mata mereka dengan kain sambil memegang buku “1987: Singapore’s Marxist Conspiracy 30 years on”.

    Aktivis sosial Jolovan Wham turut mengongsi gambar-gambar mengenai bantahan itu di Facebooknya, yang kini tersebar online.

    Pihak polis menyatakan,” Sesiapa yang mempunyai sebarang maklumat boleh menghantarkannya online di www.police.gov.sg/iwitness. Semua maklumat akan dirahsiakan.”

    The government detains him for his opposing views, portraying him as someone who supports terrorism but at the same time it keeps a blind eye to the terrorism, murder and genocide committed by its friends in Israel. What hypocrisy!

    In actual fact the atrocities committed by Israel are the major contributing factor for the rise of extremists and terrorism that we are witnessing today.

    ACCIRD – Madrasah Students More Confident And Critical

    “Madrasah students have definitely changed…” is what crossed my mind as I sat through the talk given by Mr Gerald Kong from the ACCIRD about Christianity and Catholicism to students at Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah this morning. Unlike madrasah students of the past, these students are unafraid and unapologetic about asking the difficult questions and are much more critical of what is presented to them.

    Some questions include what is the nature of the Pope in Christianity andthe problem of papal succession, another student asked if Jesus truly is God then why does he need to sacrifice himself as the Son to bring about salvation and why was it done in such a violent manner. Aside from theological questions there were some who were curious about how Christians and Muslims can work together to combat extremism and bigotry, in short it was a riveting Q&A session.

    Hopefully the Madrasahs and schools will continue to engage us in bringing such talks to their students in the future, looks like we can expect more exciting times ahead…

    ISA Arrests ‘Point To Need To Tighten Immigration’

    The recent detention of eight radicalised Bangladeshis here under the Internal Security Act (ISA) points to the need to tighten the Republic’s immigration policy, Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan said on Wednesday (May 4) morning.

    Speaking to reporters after a walkabout in Bukit Batok, where he is vying to become the ward’s Member of Parliament, Dr Chee called on the Government to deal with the problem at its “root cause” by preventing more of such radical elements, which endanger Singapore society, from entering the Republic’s shores.

    He was responding to questions from reporters about the Bangladeshis’ detention under the ISA, which he had spoken against previously on human rights grounds.

    On Tuesday, the Home Affairs Ministry revealed that the eight Bangladeshi workers had formed a terror cell here aimed at bringing their homeland under Islamic State’s self-declared caliphate. It is the second reported case involving radicalised individuals from the Bangladeshi community here.

    Responding, Dr Chee did not mention the SDP’s stance on the ISA, but said the Government has been “lax” in its immigration policy by taking in large numbers of foreigners. “You let in hundreds of thousands, millions … there must be people there who are not properly vetted,” he said.

    The Government must “get it at the root cause” and prevent such situations “even before they come in”, he said, adding that if he was elected, he would raise questions on the vetting process with Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam.

    Asked about Dr Chee’s comments, Mr Shanmugam, who was speaking to reporters about the detentions on Wednesday afternoon, said they showed “a lack of understanding of the problem”.

    “So what does Dr Chee suggest? That we say no to all foreign workers? Or we say no to all foreign workers who are Muslim? I think (you) should clarify that. There are tens of thousands of Bangladeshi workers in Singapore, several tens of thousands. They are in our construction sector, working for our town councils, large numbers as cleaners … So what do we do? Send them all back? Who is going to do their jobs?” said Mr Shanmugam.

    “After (the attacks in) Paris, after Jakarta, after all these arrests, they still say abolish the ISA and that all of these are immigration issues … these are serious matters, security issues that require careful consideration and proper thought … We should stop taking cheap political shots and political opportunism.”

    When further queried about its stand on the ISA, SDP central executive committee member Paul Tambyah reiterated the need to address the “root of the problem” and the Government’s “unfettered immigration policy”.

    Meanwhile, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) corrected Dr Chee’s interpretation of employment data during his rally on Tuesday, calling it “alarmist”.

    Dr Chee had said only 100 jobs were created for locals last year. The MOM said the figures he referred to — local employment — did not refer to the total number of new jobs taken by locals.

    Local employment refers to the difference between total number of locals entering jobs and those leaving jobs, for example owing to retirement. They also pointed out that the difference was 700 last year, not 100.
