    Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin: Don’t Kill Bahasa Melayu

    CANBERRA: Deputy Prime Minster Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Bahasa Melayu had a place as the language of knowledge and it should not be sacrificed amid efforts to empower the English language.

    In defending the government’s decision to revert the teaching of Science and Mathematics in Bahasa Melayu from English, the deputy prime minister made his stand clear on this.

    “As a Malaysian, I don’t think my language should be killed just because I want to strengthen English language usage,” he said during the question-and-answer session with members of the Malaysian community and students at a gathering, here, Tuesday night.

    The event held at the Malaysian High Commission premises in Canberra kicked off Muhyiddin’s three-day working visit to the Australian capital and Perth. He had flown into Canberra from Nagoya, Japan this afternoon after attending an international conference on education for sustainable development.

    Muhyiddin, who is Education Minister, said his views on this matter were not because he is Malay as it had more to do with his concern over the issue of imparting and absorbing knowledge in an effective manner.

    “This is not a question of my nationality because if Malaysia had not started that way (upholding Bahasa Melayu)…. it means for both subjects, Bahasa Melayu would just die,” he said.

    Muhyiddin explained that he would not be fair to Malaysian students if the move to teach Science and Mathematics in English was continued given the constraints faced by the ministry.

    He cited insufficient qualified teachers to carry out the task at hand as among the reasons the decision to revoke the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English was made in 2009.

    He pointed out that many of the teachers were the product of a system in which the medium of instruction was Bahasa Melayu.

    Muhyiddin said during the time that the policy was implemented, many teachers involved would automatically revert to Bahasa Melayu when students in Science and Mathematics classes failed to understand what was being taught, and this defeated the purpose of the introduction of the policy in the first place.

    “Maybe in your school, it is okay but for many other schools, ít’s not okay, as the teachers are not qualified, so the students don’t understand. But what is wrong with Bahasa Melayu (to teach Science and Mathematics)? So now we’ve gone back to Bahasa Melayu.

    “Ánd the students can understand. For me, I’m concerned about knowledge; Science is knowledge, Maths is knowledge. Language is the medium. So if you are concerned about English, I’ll teach you English,” he said.

    Muhyiddin cited Japan which excelled in various fields of knowledge despite everything being in Japanese.

    Kelantan’s Hudud Technical Committee Mulling The Use of Guillotine For Individuals Convicted Under Hudud

    KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 — After receiving rebuke from the medical fraternity over its proposal to amputate the limbs of criminals convicted under hudud, Kelantan is now mulling the use of the guillotine – an 18th century contraption used during the French revolution to carry out executions by beheading.

    Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah told The Star that the state-level hudud technical committee is contemplating introducing a “mini version” of the apparatus, which he said would no longer need the services of surgeons.

    Mohd Amar, who chairs the committee, conceded that medical practitioners are averse to the proposal of amputating limbs as it is in contrary to the Hippocratic Oath.

    The Hippocratic Oath states, among others, that doctors must never do harm to anyone, and must do what is best for their patients.

    “The surgeon must first agree to carry out the procedure but he is likely to face the wrath of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) for violating the Hippocratic Oath,” he was quoted saying in the local English daily.

    In April, the MMA warned that it will seek to disqualify surgeons who perform the unethical amputations on criminals convicted under hudud, reminding doctors that they are bound by their professional ethics to do no harm.

    The MMA represents 14,000 out of 37,000 doctors in Malaysia.

    With the guillotine, however, Mohd Amar said punishments could be meted out effectively as the method is fast; it requires only one individual to pull the lever; two to hold down the convict; the presence of the judge who ordered the sentence; and a doctor to ensure the offender “does not drastically suffer from the punishments”.

    “I will make extensive studies on the method used during the French Revolution in the 18th century when guillotines were used to sever the heads of those sentenced to death,” said Mohd Amar, adding that he will present his proposal to the hudud committee’s next meeting for feedback.

    Mohd Amar has been steadfast in his opinion that amputations under hudud is a far more effective penalty compared to the existing Penal Code’s jail terms, as it does not burden taxpayers.

    But the Kelantan state lawmaker added that due consideration would be given before sentences are meted out for offenders who steal due to hunger or other compelling circumstances.

    In 1993, the PAS state government passed the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment II, but the strict Islamic penal code has not been enforced due to conflicts with the Federal Constitution.

    The state formed the technical committee after state government announced in April that it is gearing up present two Private Member’s Bills to Parliament, hoping to remove all obstacles to its implementation of the hudud law in Kelantan by 2015.

    But PAS is facing unyielding resistance from its Pakatan Rakyat (PR) partners PKR and DAP, and has said it hopes to get the necessary votes from Umno MPs in order to get the bill approved. The Islamist party will need a simple majority of 112 votes for this.

    In Islamic jurisprudence, “hudud” covers crimes such as theft, robbery, adultery, rape and sodomy.

    Punishments for the crimes are severe, including amputation, flogging and death by stoning.

    PETALING JAYA: Pelakon Zahiril Adzim menjelaskan tindakannya menunaikan solat di parkir Pusat Dagangan Dunia Putra (PWTC) sebelum ke majlis Anugerah Skrin 2014 (ASK 2014) pada 7 November lalu bukan bertujuan untuk menunjuk-nunjuk.

    Zahiril, 29, berkata, dia terpaksa menunaikan solat Maghrib di kawasan letak kereta tersebut berikutan sudah kesuntukan masa selepas berkejar-kejar dari lokasi penggambaran untuk menghadiri majlis berkenaan.

    “Saya terpaksa menunaikan solat Maghrib di parkir kerana waktu solat sudah suntuk dan saya sudah mengagaknya. Jadi selepas selesai penggambaran saya pulang ke rumah untuk ambil isteri saya dan ketika itu saya sudah siap-siap ambil air sembahyang.

    “Selepas sampai sahaja di PWTC saya cari tempat tersorok untuk bersembahyang kerana kalau saya bergegas ke surau sudah tentu penuh, lagi pun saya takut air sembahyang terbatal jika ada yang ingin bergambar ketika dalam perjalanan ke surau,” ujarnya kepada mStar Online.

    Zahiril berkata demikian ketika diminta mengulas apabila gambarnya sedang bersembahyang di kawasan parkir sebelum bermula majlis ASK 2014 tersebar dan dibualkan di laman sosial.

    Gambar dirakamkan oleh peminat yang melihat situasi itu menyebabkan Zahiril dituduh mahu menunjuk-nunjuk kerana tidak menunaikan solat di surau yang disediakan di PWTC.

    Jelas Zahiril, dia sendiri terkejut apabila diberitahu tentang gambar itu tersebar dan diperkatakan di laman sosial.

    “Saya rasa ia tidak elok untuk disebarkan kerana akan menimbulkan fitnah seperti ini, saya pun tidak perasan siapa yang mengambil gambar tersebut. Kalau benar saya mahu menunjuk-nunjuk baik saya sembahyang di red carpet  sahaja.

    “Saya sudah cari tempat paling sunyi yang tidak ada orang ramai, namun saya tahu ada pengawal keselamatan berhampiran kerana takut kalau ada apa-apa berlaku ketika sedang solat,” katanya.

    Malaysians authorities are on the alert following the expected release of about 350 former Jemaah Islamiah members from prisons in Indonesia.

    Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysian police was aware of the possible release of the prisoners, which is expected to be on Friday.

    “The police are working with their Indonesian counterparts to secure the full list of prisoners released,” he told a press conference at the police headquarters in Bukit Aman on Thursday.

    “We will remain vigilant in the matter.”

    He was commenting on JI bomb expert Malaysian Taufik Abdul Halim, 39, who would be sent back to Malaysia after being incarcerated in Indonesia for 12 years.

    Taufik is the brother-in-law of FBI most wanted terrorist Zulkifli Abdul Khir, better known as Marwan.

    “Action will be taken against him if he has committed any criminal offences in Malaysia. “The police will keep close tabs on him,” he said.

    Dr Ahmad Zahid vowed that the country would not be used as a base or transit point for terrorists.

    “We are committed towards combating terrorism and using existing laws to do so. “The country will not be a “haven” for terrorists or militants,” he said.

    It was reported that Taufik was released from an Indonesian prison after being jailed for 12 years for an attempted bombing of a shopping mall in Jakarta on August 1, 2001.

    He is expected to arrive from Indonesia on Thursday, after which he would be under police custody for some time.

    Taufik was also a member of Malaysian militant group Kumpulan Militan Malaysia (KMM), responsible for murders and numerous bank robberies.

    Pasangan Suami Isteri Antara Tujuh Yang Didakwa Di Malaysia

    KUALA LUMPUR: Sepasang suami isteri adalah antara tujuh warga Malaysia yang dikaitkan dengan militan Negara Islam (IS) di Syria, yang dihadapkan ke mahkamah atas dakwaan mencari dana dan memberikan sokongan kepada kumpulan itu.

    Mereka didakwa terbabit dalam kegiatan dan usaha mengumpul dana serta berniat menyertai kumpulan militan IS di Syria.

    Pasangan suami isteri itu – Amir Azlan Zainuddin, 48 tahun, dan isteri, Nazhatulshima Sahak, 44 tahun – dituduh di Mahkamah Majistret Shah Alam kelmarin bersama pembantu kedai makanan, Muhammad Fadhil Ibrahim serta Muhammad Na’eem Apandi, kedua-duanya berusia 24 tahun, cuba memberi sokongan kepada kumpulan IS.

    Nazhatulshima, pengusaha taska, didakwa bersama Muhammad Fadhil cuba memberi sokongan kepada pengganas IS dengan cara membeli tiket penerbangan pesawat Emirates bagi perjalanan dari Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) ke Istanbul, Turkey.

    Mereka didakwa mahu memasuki Syria melalui Istanbul.

    Sementara itu, pekerja kedai kek, Mohammad Na’im Abd Rashid, 26 tahun, didakwa di Mahkamah Sesyen Sepang atas tuduhan memberi sokongan dengan berada di Syria.

    Mohammad Na’im didakwa memberi sokongan dengan memasuki Syria melalui Istanbul menggunakan penerbangan antarabangsa Qatar Airways.

    Mohammad Na’im, dari Nibong Tebal, Pulau Pinang, ditahan oleh anggota Bahagian Counter Terrorism, Cawangan Khas Ibu Pejabat Polis Bukit Aman sejurus sebelum meninggalkan Malaysia.

    Tertuduh, yang telah berkahwin, pernah berada di Syria untuk tempoh tertentu dan ditahan ketika cuba berlepas ke negara tersebut kali kedua.

    Seorang perunding kewangan, Rohaimi Abd Rahim, 37 tahun, pula didakwa di Mahkamah Majistret atas pertuduhan mencari dana bagi manfaat kumpulan militan IS melalui blog Revolusi Islam.com sejak Mac lepas.

    Rohaimi didakwa melakukan perbuatan itu di No. 5B, Jalan Raja Ali, Kampung Baru di sini antara 29 Mac hingga 13 Oktober lepas.

    Seorang lagi tertuduh, penjual kereta, Muhamad Fauzi Misrak, 34 tahun, didakwa bersubahat bersama Rohaimi atas tuduhan sama dengan membenarkan akaun Maybank miliknya digunakan dalam blog Revolusi Islam sebagai medium mencari dana bagi manfaat IS pada masa dan tempat sama.

    Tiada pengakuan direkodkan daripada ketujuh-tujuh tertuduh.

    Kesemua mereka juga tidak dibenarkan diikat jamin kerana ditahan mengikut Akta Kesalahan Keselamatan (Langkah-Langkah Khas) 2012 yang melarang jaminan diberikan. – BHM, Utusan Malaysia.
