Political Consultant: Malaysia At Serious Risk Of Attack By ISIS

Malaysia is at serious risk of an attack by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) militants, a political consultant warns.

In a report carried by CNBC, head of Alavan Business Advisory Alastair Newton said security warnings about the terrorist threat in Malaysia “should be taken seriously”.

“It is far from clear where, outside its ‘heartland’, Isis will strike next. But strike it will. And one region which appears to be at serious risk is Southeast Asia,” Newton was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

Newton was referring to warnings earlier this year by foreign governments that terrorists were planning attacks in and around Kuala Lumpur, following a series of explosions in Jakarta on January 14 which killed seven.

Australia in February advised its citizens to exercise normal safety precautions across Malaysia, urging them to avoid all travel to the coastal resorts of eastern Sabah, including islands, dive sites and associated tourist facilities because of the high threat of kidnapping.

New Zealand classified travel to the area as “high risk”, while the United Kingdom warned citizens against travel to coastal islands in Sabah, near the Philippines, citing high threats to foreigners of kidnapping and criminality.

In Malaysia, meanwhile, authorities said the country would remain on high security alert after terrorism analysts said Isis was now spreading its operations beyond the Middle East and Europe to Asia.

Security measures were increased in public areas, such as malls and tourist spots, while precautionary measures were said to be taken at border areas to prevent possible terrorist infiltration.

Police have arrested 157 suspected militants, including 25 women since 2013. They were believed to be involved with various levels of militant activities.

The latest was at the end of January, when seven people were picked up in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Pahang, Johor and Kedah for suspected links with Isis. Police seized a cache of bullets for various types of firearms, including those for the M16 assault rifle.

The three-day operation was a follow-up to the earlier arrest of a man at an LRT station in Kuala Lumpur on January 15.

The seven were said to be planning attacks at several popular spots in the Klang Valley as well as other states. Among those detained was a cell leader, a Sabahan, who works as an assistant manager of a hotel in Johor.

Another suspect arrested in Johor was a 33-year-old factory store supervisor.

One of the seven was also identified as the cell’s fund manager, whose task was to collect and channel funds to those wanting to go to Syria and for carrying out attacks.

The man, aged 50, was arrested in Kedah and had worked as a cendol seller. He was assisted by another detainee, aged 26 from Terengganu, who was planning to join Isis in Syria.

The counter-terrorism unit had also found out that one of those arrested had been in communication with Bahrun Naim, the Indonesian founding member of Khatibah Nusantara Muhammad, and whom Indonesian police said orchestrated the Jakarta attacks on January 14.

Another one of those arrested had been in contact with Malaysian Isis recruiter, Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi, also known as Abu Hamzah.

  • No Need To Mourn For Malaysians Who Left For Singapore

No Need To Mourn For Malaysians Who Left For Singapore

PETALING JAYA: There is no need to cry over the estimated 7,828 former Malaysians who gave up their citizenship for our neighbour, Singapore, an Utusan Malaysia editor has said.

Zulkifli Jalil, in a column, said the only thing to mourn was those who chose to renounce their citizenship on the grounds the republic gave such quarters more benefits.

He was responding to a statement by Ong Kian Ming of DAP, who said he felt saddened by Malaysians, a majority of whom were Chinese, who chose to become Singapore citizens as it deprived the nation of professionals and a highly-skilled workforce.

Zulkifli, however, said it was best to just let them leave.

“There are still many more professionals among the 30 million Malaysians who are committed and want to serve their beloved country.”

Zulkifli said that while the current economic situation made life difficult, it had not come to a point where one needed to renounce one’s citizenship.

He then reminded the 7,828 former Malaysians that it would be difficult for the country to welcome them back as citizens, citing complications experienced by British Overseas Citizen (BOC) passports holders in 2014.

The issue arose when Ng Wei Aik of DAP claimed the government had agreed to bring back more than 500 BOC passport holders.

BOC passport holders are Malaysian citizens who had chosen to give up their citizenship to apply for UK citizenship instead.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had in 2014 said citizenship would not be given automatically and that applicants had to adhere to stipulations spelt out in the Immigration Act.

For BOC passport holders, Zulkifli said, there was no forgiveness.

“Maybe Kian Ming should learn a thing or two from Wei Aik in managing those who renounced their citizenship.”

  • Singaporean Family Uses Find My IPhone App To Find Snatch Thief

Singaporean Family Uses Find My IPhone App To Find Snatch Thief

A Singaporean family visiting Kuala Lumpur has technology to thank for tracking down a group of snatch thieves.

On Saturday, Mr Liu Wai Yaw, 51, and his family were travelling along Jalan Bukit Bintang when a man on a motorcycle smashed the passenger-side window at a traffic light, grabbed his wife’s Birkin bag and fled the scene, The Star reported.

Her iPhone 6 was in the bag, which also had about RM45,000 (S$15,100) worth of belongings.

Mr Liu tried to give chase, but failed to catch the thieves.

His 19-year-old son then came up with a great idea.

He suggested using “Find my iPhone” which is part of Apple’s iCloud service.

It uses cellular network and GPS signals to locate a missing or stolen iPhone, the Malay Mail reported.

Using the app, Mr Liu tracked the culprits to a place near Bandar Tun Razak Smart LRT station in Cheras.

Mr Liu told The Star: “We also called the police for help when we were on the way there.

“Once we reached the place, I went looking for the men with my son.”

He said he told his wife and 14-year-old daughter to wait in the car.

He saw a group of men discussing something and immediately recognised a few of them.

As expected, the group scattered when Mr Liu attempted to approach them but his son managed to grab one of them, who was still holding on to the bag.

The rest fled on two motorcycles and on foot.

    QUICK

“The police were also quick to respond. They arrived on time,” said Mr Liu, adding that the man was handed over to the police.

He added that they got back all the money and he believed the men were dividing the loot when he arrived.

He also said that the man who was arrested later showed them where they had thrown the passports and credit cards from the purse.

Mr Liu’s wife suffered cuts on her legs and hands, while his son was bitten by the man who was arrested.

  • Sir Azri: I Taught The Foreign Worker A Lesson For Making Sexual Gestures At My Sister And Her Friends

Sir Azri: I Taught The Foreign Worker A Lesson For Making Sexual Gestures At My Sister And Her Friends

Dah tu takkan aku nak biar benda tak elok berlaku kepada Adik Aku lepas tu baru Aku nak menangis macam Pondan?

  • CAD & MAS Seize Large Number Of Bank Accounts In Relation To 1MDB Probe

CAD & MAS Seize Large Number Of Bank Accounts In Relation To 1MDB Probe

The Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) have seized a “large number” of bank accounts in relation to a probe into troubled Malaysian state fund 1MDB, both said in a joint statement on Monday (Feb 1).

Their statement, issued in response to media queries, is as follows:

“Singapore does not tolerate the use of its financial system as a refuge or conduit for illicit funds. Since the middle of last year, the Commercial Affairs Department and the Monetary Authority of Singapore have been actively investigating possible money-laundering and other offences carried out in Singapore. In connection with these investigations, we have sought and are continuing to seek information from several financial institutions, are interviewing various individuals, and have seized a large number of bank accounts.

Singapore is also cooperating closely with relevant authorities, including those in Malaysia, Switzerland and the United States. We have responded to all foreign requests for information and have requested for information from relevant counterparts to aid in our investigations. As investigations are still ongoing, we are not able to provide more details at this stage.”

In response to the MAS and CAD announcement, 1MDB issued a statement on Monday night saying it has not been has not been contacted by any foreign legal authorities on any matters relating to the company. “1MDB remains committed to fully cooperating with any lawful authority and investigation, subject to advice from the relevant domestic lawful authorities, and in accordance with international protocols governing such matters,” it said.

Last year, Singapore authorities said they had frozen at least two bank accounts of individuals believed to be linked to 1MDB, whose advisory board is chaired by the Malaysian Prime Minister. However 1MDB said in September 2015 that none of its bank accounts had been frozen by either Swiss or Singapore authorities.

On Jan 30, Swiss authorities said they would hand a formal request for assistance on 1MDB “in the coming days”. This comes after Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was cleared of any wrongdoing with regard to RM2.6 billion (US$607 million) worth of donations that were channelled into his bank accounts.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency had been investigating the donation into Mr Najib’s accounts, and also in relation to SRC International, a former subsidiary of the state fund.

On Sunday Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi questioned why the Swiss Attorney-General publicly issued a statement instead of going straight to his Malaysian counterpart.

“By making a public statement, in my opinion, it is not good because it not only strains ties between the two countries, but also creates bias in media reports,” DPM Zahid said, adding that such information should have been conveyed through government-to-government channels.

A spokesperson for Switzerland’s Office of Attorney-General (OAG) said “as a law enforcement body and judicial authority, the OAG has not to comment on political statements”. He added that the OAG notes Malaysia’s commitment to fully support Switzerland’s request for mutual assistance.
