  • Minister Koh Poh Koon Say Water And Other Rising Costs Set To Have Only “Small Impact” On Inflation

Minister Koh Poh Koon Say Water And Other Rising Costs Set To Have Only “Small Impact” On Inflation

Recent adjustments to water and carpark prices may contribute to a “temporary increase” in inflation, but any impact is expected to be “small”, said Minister of State for Trade and Industry Koh Poh Koon.

Dr Koh said the various price adjustments will contribute around 0.2 percentage points to inflation this year. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has projected prices to be higher this year than they were last year, with the consumer price index (CPI) to come in at 0.5 to 1.5 per cent.

Dr Koh said the main driver of the increase in prices this year is the expected increase in the price of electricity and “other energy-related components” such as petrol. This, he said, comes against a backdrop of increases in global oil prices.

Dr Koh was asked by MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC Zaqy Mohamad if the increase in water, electricity, transport and carpark prices would impact inflation and to what extent. Mr Zaqy said his residents have voiced concern on the “slew of government announcements” of such increases.

“Does the Ministry proactively monitor this and coordinate with agencies so that we can smoothen the impact in anticipation of some of these potential increases that we know … for example the energy prices you mentioned? Could we have smoothened some of these increases as well to make it more affordable for citizens?” Mr Zaqy asked.

Dr Koh said the Government takes price increases seriously and wherever possible, will smooth out increases although he said it is difficult as oil and gas prices are not within the Government’s control. These will have to be adjusted when prices fluctuate.

But he said for households receiving the GST Utilities-Save (U-Save) vouchers, the impact of inflation will be much less. That is because rebates are not included in the calculation of CPI.

  • Indian Cable Installer Jailed 9 Months For Molesting 12 Year Old Girl In Her Own Home

Indian Cable Installer Jailed 9 Months For Molesting 12 Year Old Girl In Her Own Home

A foreign worker who went to a flat to install a fibre optic cable earlier this year molested a 12-year old girl there. On Friday he was sentenced to nine months’ jail.

A district court heard that Chellamuthu Gajendran, 36 went to the flat at about 3pm on March 3 to carry out the installation works. The girl, a primary school student, was in the flat with her younger brother and she was reading a book in the living room.

About 15 minutes later, he asked to use the toilet and the girl showed him the way.

He then approached her and hugged her. He did this again later and also touched her breasts.

Shocked, the victim did not say anything and moved away. She sat down and continued to read her book. He repeated the acts and she pushed him away.

Asked if she liked it, she replied emphatically that she did not.

When she asked why he had done that to her, he said that he could not control himself.

The girl told her parents about the incident the next day via text message as she was too embarrassed to talk about it in person . Her father took her to make a police report that evening.

Gajendran was arrested on March 18.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Michael Quilindo said Gajendran had taken advantage of the fact that the girl was alone when he molested her in the sanctity of her own home.

Lawyer Rajan Supramaniam said his client, a father of two, is profoundly remorseful and offers his apology to the victim.

He said Gajendran had been working in Singapore for the past five years and had lost his job.

District Judge Low Wee Ping told Gajendran that he had been very foolish, and that he could have faced three charges and be punished with caning.

The maximum penalty for molesting a person under 14 years old is five years’ jail, fine and caning.

  • Man Charged For Sexually Abusing Niece Who Was Then Only 12 Years Old

Man Charged For Sexually Abusing Niece Who Was Then Only 12 Years Old

A construction firm supervisor appeared in the High Court yesterday accused of sexually abusing his young niece, who had looked up to him as a “father figure”.

The 51-year-old Malaysian faces a total of six charges for sexual acts with the victim on five occasions from 2005 – when she was just 12 years old – to 2008.

They include one count of rape, two counts of oral sex, one count of sexual exploitation of a child, one count of outrage of modesty and one count of sexual assault of a minor.

The man, represented by Mr N. Kanagavijayan, has admitted to the charge of sexual assault, committed in 2008 when the girl was 15. However, he is disputing the other five charges, including the most serious one of rape, which carries up to 20 years’ jail and caning or a fine.

A seven-day trial started in the High Court yesterday.

The alleged victim is now 23 years old. A probation officer who accompanied her to report the offences is among the six prosecution witnesses.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ong Luan Tze said in the prosecution’s opening address that the victim regarded the accused, her maternal aunt’s common law husband, as a “father figure” after her biological father died in 2003.

The accused abused his position in the victim’s life to sexually groom her and performed sexual acts with her without her consent, the DPP contended.

On one occasion in 2005, he sexually abused her while helping her to change her clothes to visit her mother in hospital.

On another occasion, he woke her up and slipped his hand into her shorts.

    The trial continues.

  • Odd-Job Labourer Jailed For Sex With 12 Year Old Girl

Odd-Job Labourer Jailed For Sex With 12 Year Old Girl

An odd-job labourer was yesterday jailed 12 months for having sex with a 12-year-old girl.

Xavier Lee Wei Jie, 24, got to know the girl through mutual friends on March 17. The girl, a Secondary 1 student, was meeting her friends at West Mall in Bukit Batok.

She cannot be named because of a gag order to protect her identity.

Later that night, Lee invited the girl to his flat, also in Bukit Batok, and she agreed.

They arrived between 2am and 3am, and spent some time talking in Lee’s bedroom where they started to get intimate.

Lee suggested that they have sex, but the girl was reluctant. He managed to persuade her to change her mind and they had sex in his room.

The girl later told her family about the incident and her mother made a police report on March 29.

When asked by the judge if he had anything to say, Lee said: “I’m sorry”.
