Fugitive Former NTUC Chairman And PAP MP Finally Charged In Court

Former chairman of the National Trades Union Congress and Member of Parliament Phey Yew Kok appeared in court on Wednesday (Jun 24), after being on the run for almost 36 years.

Phey was charged on Dec 10, 1979 with four counts of criminal breach of trust of a total of S$82,520, and other offences under the Trade Union Act. He was out on bail at S$100,000 but did not have his passport impounded. Phey failed to turn up in court on Jan 7, 1980, and a warrant of arrest was issued on the same day. His two sureties lost S$95,000 of their bail bonds as a result.

Investigations revealed Phey had left Singapore for Kuala Lumpur by train on Dec 31, 1979, and proceeded to Bangkok where he disappeared. He surrendered at the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok on Monday, and officers from Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau accompanied him back to the Republic on the same day.

State Courts heard that the charges still stand and investigations will resume. Additional charges may also be tendered.

When the charges were re-read to Phey before the State Courts on Wednesday, the accused said to District Judge Eddy Tham that “if my memory still does not fail me, I don’t think the money was transferred to my personal account”. Phey also had to ask the court interpreter to read the charges to him slowly as he said he was hard of hearing.

There will be no bail, and Phey will be remanded pending further investigation.

Phey is scheduled to appear in court again on Jul 23 at 2.15pm.

For the charges, Phey faces a prescribed punishment of up to seven years’ jail for criminal breach of trust by a public servant, and is liable to a fine.

For the Trades Union Act charges, Phey faces a prescribed punishment of a fine up to S$1,000 unless the offences warrant another form of punishment under the act.

    “ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CORRUPTION”

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that a “clean and non-corrupt system” has been maintained in Singapore for fifty years “because we have zero tolerance for corruption”.

“We will not allow any cover up, even when it is awkward or embarrassing for the Government,” added Mr Lee.

In response to media queries, Mr Lee said: “He has been charged in court, and the law will have to take its course.”

“This will bring closure to a long outstanding case involving a person who was holding public office as an MP and a senior union leader,” he added.

NTUC acknowledged Phey’s surrender to the authorities. “We must now let the law take its course,” the labour movement said in a statement.

Phey was general secretary of multiple trade unions including the Singapore Industrial Labour Organisation (SILO) and the Pioneer Industries Employees Union (PIEU) from 1970 to 1970.

He was also a People’s Action Party Member of Parliament for Boon Teck between 1972 and 1979.

Tin Pei Ling Expecting First Child

Marine Parade GRC MP Tin Pei Ling has revealed that she is expecting her first child. But she will continue to keep up with her parliamentary duties and constituency work for as long as she is able to do so.

“This is my first baby and my hubby and I are looking forward to welcoming this new member to our family. I am excited and a bit nervous, given that it is a whole new experience for me,” the 31-year-old wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday.

She decided to make the announcement after several recent enquiries from a number of people, she explained.

“I have been blessed to have the full support of my fellow MPs in the Marine Parade GRC team and my team in MacPherson. They have both pledged to help support and cover me if and when I need to slow down.

“We will continue to put in our best efforts to serve the needs of MacPherson residents,” added Ms Tin, a first-term MP who entered politics in the 2011 General Election

She had said in recent interviews that she hoped to soon start a family with her husband – Mr Ng How Yue, who is Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Law.

On Facebook, she added: “Looking forward to meeting the little one. Hope to have your blessings too!”

Dozens of netizens congratulated her, with some encouraging her to take care and not to overwork herself.

Anwar Ibrahim’s Daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar Granted Divorce From Husband

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar was granted a divorce from her businessman husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Ahmad today, said The Star Online.

The report said Raja Ahmad Shahrir uttered the talak or the pronouncement of divorce at 4.17pm before Shariah High Court judge Mohd Amran Mat Zain.

Nurul Izzah, 34, the eldest of opposition chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s children, filed the application for divorce in January last year.

She and Raja Ahmad Shahrir married on May 9, 2003, and have a daughter aged seven and son aged four.

The lower shariah court, in October, set December 8 to finalise the couple’s divorce after Raja Ahmad insisted that he still loved his wife and children and refused to utter the talak.

The politician and her estranged husband agreed to joint custody of their two children in December.

  • PAP MP Lim Biow Chuan Wrote Formal Letter To Encourage Daughter

PAP MP Lim Biow Chuan Wrote Formal Letter To Encourage Daughter

So what happens when you put a man with a strong faith and Facebook together? Well you get this.

On Nov. 19, 2014, Lim put up on Facebook a picture of a letter he wrote last year to encourage his daughter who was going to receive her PSLE results

Besides showing that he is a God-fearing doting father, he is rather formal, because how many people actually types out a letter to their kid?

Regardless, for those of you who also want to write something sweet to your offspring but are too tired or lazy or because you are not much of a professional letter writer, you can copy and paste the text below, which is Lim’s letter. Do remember to change the date and name to suit your circumstances.

    You’re welcome.

    21 November 2013

    My dearest Rebecca,

    LETTER FROM YOUR FATHER

Tomorrow the PSLE results will be announced. This last week has been a period of anxiety for myself and your mother as we worry about things which we should not be worrying about. If we have been harsh or impatient with you during these last few weeks, I apologise for we should have known better as your parents.

Regardless of how you perform in your PSLE exams, I want to assure you that you are precious to me and to God. You have always been kind, compassionate and helpful to others, I still recall how you asked me to bring you for the wake of a schoolmate when her mother passed away last year. You have always been wanting to stand up for your classmates who have been bullied.

Good grades are not the most important thing in life. What is very important to me is your character. I want to encourage you to lead your life in an upright manner — hardworking, honest, respectful, humble, loyal and willing to help others. I hope to see my daughter grow up as someone who loves God (just as God loves you) and someone who hold God in awe.

It is important to be hardworking and to aspire to do your best in your endeavours. In all that you do, put in your best efforts. None of us would ever lead our lives without any mistakes. When you fumble or make mistakes in life, acknowledge your errors and learn from the mistake so that you can improve. Do not ever look down on yourself or allow anyone to look down on you. You will always be unique and have your own gifts and talent which God has given to you.

As I had said to your elder sister, honor and love your mother, your sister and your family. We will always be closest to you and will be there to support and encourage you all the time.

You are dearly treasured as my daughter. I am proud to be your father and to be called your dad.

    With love,
    Daddy

Editor’s note: The number of Facebook Likes on his name card was exaggerated. During GE2011, he had only a few hundred fans. The 23,172 Likes was supposed to reflect the number of fans he hopes to get. He currently has 1,915 Likes.

  • PAP MP Shames Small Boy Online For Cycling At High Speed At Void Deck

PAP MP Shames Small Boy Online For Cycling At High Speed At Void Deck

PAP MP for Nee Soon GRC Lee Bee Wah has taken to Facebook to shame a small boy for cycling at a void deck in her constituency.

She posted to the Nee Soon South Community Club Facebook page alerting residents of a “high speed cyclist” at the void deck of Blk 879.

She had uploaded a photo of the CCTV camera footage and asked for residents to email her if they know where the cyclist lived.

The photo that was uploaded showed a small boy on his bicycle going through the void deck:

It seems that even small kids can be shamed online and punished for trying to enjoy themselves and exercise in the area around their home.

Singapore is already very crowded and there is very little space for young children to play or cycle near their homes.

Do you think it is appropriate to put photos of a young boy online and ‘shame’ him for cycling in the void deck?
