    Gold Coated Quran Aged Almost 500 Years Old Seized From Gang In India

    A nearly 500-year-old gold coated antique Quran believed to be from the Mughal period has been seized from a gang that was trying to sell it for Rs five crores in Mysuru.

    Police in the Mysuru district seized the ancient Quran while a group of 10 persons were trying to sell it near the Hosa Agrahara Railway station in rural Mysuru on Monday. The Superintendent of Police of the Mysuru district Abhinav Khare said that the 10 persons who were trying to sell the ancient copy of the Islamic holy book, have been arrested.

    The Quran that was in the possession of the gang and a car they were using have been seized, Mysuru district SP said. A case has been registered at the Saligrama police station under section 25 of the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act 1972 and section 420 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, SP Khare said. “We are investigating the case to ascertain how the gang got hold of the book,” Khare told The Indian Express.

    The ten persons who were arrested have been identified as N Nagaraju, 30, V Murali Krishna, 30,  and Bhaskar M, 31, all residents of Raichur district, Kallappa Kambala, 54 of Kalburgi, Kanakappa Kambala, 40 of Gadag, Sanath, 27 of Udupi, Ravindra, 33 of Kollur, Vijayendra, 30 of Hosanagar, Prasad, 43 of Sagar and Raghavendra, 30 of Siddapur.

    The Mysuru district police said that a team was looking for the gang after police recieved credible information that a group of men were trying to find customer to sell a gold coated Quran. Saligrama police sub-inspector S Gangadhar recieved an information around 8 pm on Monday that five members of the group were in a car near the Hosa Agrahara Railway station and were trying to sell the ancient copy of the Quran. He sent two police constables as decoys and the gang demanded Rs five crore to sell the book. The gang was arrested following the arrival of additonal police forces. Five more members of the gang were arrested from Mysuru city.

    Police investigation has revealed that the accused did not inform the archeology department about being in possession of the ancient Quran though it is mandatory while holding any type of antique goods. “This 500 year old holy Quran has a total of 302 sheets and 604 pages. All pages are coated with gold,” Mysuru SP Khare said.

    Most Malay Malaysians Identify Themselves As “Muslims First”

    KUALA LUMPUR — Most Malay Malaysians identify themselves as “Muslims first” rather than Malaysians or Malays first, independent pollster Merdeka Centre said yesterday, amid rising religious conservatism in the country.

    The centre’s executive director Ibrahim Suffian said its recent survey had found 60 per cent of Malays seeing themselves as being Muslim first, as opposed to 27 per cent who had identified themselves as Malaysians and only 6 per cent as Malays.

    In contrast, only 3 per cent of Chinese and 16 per cent of Indians said they identified themselves by their religion, based on the survey, which he said would be published on Sept 5.

    “Most Malaysians see themselves as Malaysians first, with the exception of the dominant group, Malays,” Mr Ibrahim told a discussion on the politics of race in Malaysia yesterday, organised by the Global Movement of Moderates.“Malays are increasingly identify themselves as Muslims first.”

    He added that fewer Malays were identifying themselves by their ethnicity compared with 10 years ago, despite Barisan Nasional’s (BN) reliance on race to woo voters.

    In 2005, 11 per cent of Malays polled by Merdeka Centre said they saw themselves as Malays first. This has now dropped to 6 per cent, said Mr Ibrahim.

    Meanwhile, most Chinese (58 per cent) and Indians (63 per cent) saw themselves as Malaysians first, while 24 per cent Chinese and 11 per cent Indians identified themselves by their ethnicity, based on the latest survey.

    “Future campaigning based on race will have a tough time convincing the electorate,” Mr Ibrahim said.

    He added that Malaysia’s 2013 general election results already suggested Malaysians did not respond to race baiting. “If you look overall, BN still lost 4 per cent of the popular vote, so I think there’s a limit to how much racial rhetoric can be used.

    “Maybe as many as 40 per cent of Malays don’t respond to Malay markers. They are more concerned with issues of good governance and what the government can do for them.”

    He said Malay voter support for ruling party United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) improved only by 2 per cent during the last election, and that support figures were markedly lower among young Malay voters.

    Meanwhile, opposition party Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) gained 1.2 per cent more of the popular vote because of support from non-Malays, he added. “Malay support for PAS declined marginally by 1.3 per cent, mostly from (the states of) Perlis and Kedah,” he said. “This means its partnership with the Democratic Action Party did not substantially subtract support in locations such as Perak, Selangor or Johor.”

    A father of a 20-year-old girl let his daughter drown, stopping life guards from rescuing her.

    He preferred that his daughter die rather than she be touched by a strange man, according to a top official.

    Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Lt. Col Ahmed Burqibah, Deputy Director of Dubai Police’s Search and Rescue Department said that this incident took place at a beach in Dubai.

    “This is one of the incidents which I cannot forget.

    “It shocked me and many others who were involved in the case.

    “The Asian father took his wife and kids to the beach for picnic and fun.

    “The kids were swimming in the beach when suddenly, the 20-year-old girl started drowning and screaming for help.

    “Two rescue men were at the beach, and they rushed to help the girl.

    “However, there was one obstacle which prevented them from reaching the girl and helping her.

    “This obstacle was the belief of this Asian man who considered that if these men touched his daughter, then this would dishonour her. It cost him the life of his daughter.”

    Lt. Col. Burqibah added that the father of the girl did not want the rescue men to touch his daughter as they were strange men.

    “The father was a tall and strong man. He started pulling and preventing the rescue men and got violent with them. He told them that he prefers his daughter being dead than being touched by a strange man.”

    He pointed out that this delay and fight with the girl’s father cost the girl her life. She drowned.

    “She died unfortunately, at a time when she had a chance to live, especially that the rescue men were so close to her to pull her out of the water.”

    Lt. Col. Burqibah added that the girl’s father was later arrested by Dubai Police for stopping the rescue team from saving his daughter’s life and doing their job.

    “He was prosecuted and sued by the concerned authorities.”

    Zulfikar Shariff: Muslims Must Let Islam, Not Political Affiliations, Be Foundation Of Decisions

    Yesterday I asked how a Muslim PAP supporter will choose if weakening the PAP is beneficial to Islam. Will they support weakening their party for Islam’s sake?

    The only response from someone who rejected the question based his discussion on the minority position of Muslims in Singapore. The response was based on standing as a candidate in an SMC.

    Political action should not be restricted to standing as candidates or being in a political party. Anyone who participates in society is a political actor. Your relationship with society, with the state, your public (and at times private) interactions are political. We are political beings, whether we believe in a political system, support a party or actively participate in an election.

    To simply restrict political action to being a candidate is to ignore a large portion of our socio-political interactions.

    We need to free ourselves from the confines that LKY and GCT tried to impose on us.

    Let us look at another argument that needs to be refined.

    Muslims have over the years, argued that we are the swing votes. While we do not have the numerical ability to stand on a platform based on our religious values, the belief is that we can be kingmakers.

    But let us not deceive ourselves on our own importance. We are about 15% of the population. There are guesstimates as to how many Muslims support the PAP. Some claim the majority of Muslims will always vote for the PAP while others argue its a minority.

    For ease of discussions, let us assume it to be 50%.

    The PAP won a 60% majority in the last elections. The 30%+ who rejected them included half of the Muslim community.

    Even if we vote en bloc, the PAP nationally, will not be affected. If every Muslim in Singapore vote for opposition, the PAP would still get 50%+ of the votes. And if all of us vote for the PAP, they would still get 60%+.

    We are not kingmakers.

    But this does not fully discuss the possibilities. While we may not be kingmakers, we can have an effect in several constituencies.

    The PAP won 51% at the Joo Chiat SMC. It has now been absorbed into Marine Parade GRC (57% in 2011).

    A swing of Muslim votes in this GRC can result in a shift.

    There are several other constituencies that were won with very slim majorities (less than 5%).Similarly, the WP won Aljunied with less than 5% majority.

    If we truly want to expand our political options, look beyond party lines.

    The PAP obviously will not want Muslims to be politically effective. They would prefer our participation to be based on the system they defined. This has now been normalised such that opposition parties may similarly demand the rejection of religious values in a population’s political decisions.

    As though their religious or non-religious beliefs do not inform and dictate their own values and decisions.

    If we truly care about Islam, let us think beyond party lines. We have been indoctrinated into thinking our interests should not matter. As though Islam should have no part in our decisions on politics.

    Islam defines us. Every decision, every action, should be based on Islam.

    Let us return Islam to the forefront of all our decisions.

    Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is a laughing stock among fellow Brazilians for an apparent boob job.

    She is being ridiculed not so much for the boob job, as plastic surgery is common in Brazil.

    The supermodel received the flak because she hid under an all-covering burqa as she walked into the clinic, reported New York Post.

    It showed the model mum, 35, wearing the burqa to disguise herself while entering the plastic surgeon’s office in Paris last month.

    She was with her sister Rafaela, who was also wearing a burqa.

    Sources told the New York Post that after Gisele and Ms Rafaela posed as devout Muslims to secretly enter the clinic, they both underwent overnight surgical procedures.

    The two were seen wearing open-toed sandals in the photos, which some Muslim women consider inappropriate in public, reported the Daily Mail.

    Some Brazilians went online to criticise her hypocrisy.

    “She went through all this trouble just so she could say that her beauty is absolutely ‘natural’, ” said Paulo, commenting on a Brazilian news website.

    “It’s laughable!”

    The world’s highest paid supermodel had previously said there was “no way” she would ever consider plastic surgery.

    “I have never had plastic surgery, nor have I ever felt the need to do any kind of intervention,” she had said in 2011, when asked about rumours of a nose job.

    Bundchen, who took to social media on Friday for the first time since the burqa episode by posting an Instagram photo of herself in a yoga pose, has not commented on the incident yet.

    Last year, more than two million Brazilians – roughly 1 per cent of the country’s total population – had plastic surgery, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
