    Grab Driver: The Best Carparks Are Those Without Barriers

    Right off the bat, it is clear why Mr Er Keh Joo is comfortable in his job as a private-hire car driver.

    He eased into the interview with a joke.

    “My name is keju, you know, like the word ‘cheese’ in Malay,” said the 47-year-old, who has been driving for Grab for four years – almost as long as the company has been here.

    The jovial father of one told The New Paper that personality plays a big part in making a passenger feel safe and comfortable.

    He typically drives about 10 to 12 hours a day in two shifts, with a daily average of 25 trips.

    But Mr Er was quick to say that safety and good driving are always the priorities.

    Adopting a more serious tone, he said: “Nothing is more important than good driving.”

    If he feels sleepy, he will close the app and find a carpark to sleep in.

    This begs the question, which carparks are the best to sleep in?

    Mr Er immediately regained his warm sense of humour, laughing as he said: “The ones, without barriers, where you can go in for free!

    “We know where all of them are.”

    There is no doubt about that. Mr Er said that being a Grab driver is like being a part of a community – he is a member of a few WhatsApp group conversations with his peers and they trade information on where the best resting spots are, where to find good food and even the news.

    “Let’s say I want to eat lunch and take a break. I can check with them too and find (friends),” said Mr Er.

    He used to work as a taxi driver, but decided to sign up with Grab when a recruiter approached him at the airport while he was queueing for a pick-up.

    It “made sense” to join the company because he said it would open him up to more passengers.

    He joined as a GrabTaxi driver for a few months before switching to a rented car and become a GrabCar driver. He drives a Toyota Altis.

    “The rent is cheaper too, I am glad I made the decision,” he added.

    No two days are the same and there are all kinds of passengers.

    Some are chattier than others, and Mr Er said that if customers are not keen to talk, he will leave them to their own devices – usually literally.

    How does he tell? According to him, it is always obvious in their body language if people are interested in a conversation, such as how they lean forward in the car, the tone they use when talking and their facial expressions.

    But Mr Er said there are also passengers who can be rude to him.

    Some can be curt when issuing instructions about where to go and there are those who have flared up at him for making the wrong turns.

    In such cases, Mr Er said the trick is to simply focus on driving and exercise more patience.

    He said: “They’re in a rush, maybe they don’t realise what they are saying or how they sound.”

    Most passengers are, however, pleasant and some even go the extra mile to make him feel appreciated.

    Mr Er sat up as he excitedly recounted what he described as the best passenger he has had.

    As he was dropping off a woman in her 20s whom he had been chatting with, she said he looked tired and gave him a herbal plaster meant to relax muscles.

    The gesture caught him by surprise and Mr Er said he would “forever” remember the kind act.

    Such moments of courteousness keep him moving along and he said that passengers underestimate how far a simple act of kindness goes.

    “Driving all day is nice and I enjoy it, but when people say thank you or when they do small things like that, it makes me feel happy,” he said.

    A Singapore-registered BMW drew the ire of Malaysian netizens after the driver was spotted parking in the handicap lot not once but twice. The witness said the driver was not handicapped and wondered if they dared to do this in their own country Singapore.

    Ministers Should Not Take Usage Of Public Amenities For Granted

    The following is a letter from one of our readers, Maran Velayan.


    I refer to your article, ‘Resident dismayed that “VIP Minister” Grace Fu parked her car in reserved spot’ (http://theindependent.sg/resident-dismayed-that-vip-minister-grace-fu-parked-her-car-in-reserved-spot). According to the article, the resident expressed dismay that the Minister would park in a busy carpark and in a spot which residents have to pay a fee to get season parking.

    This is not the first time some of these newer Ministers are caught parking indiscriminately, setting a very bad example for many others. In September, another netizen took Minister for Education Ong Ye Kung, to task for parking his car in lots reserved for emergency vehicles at the National Library (http://theindependent.sg/netizen-alleges-minister-parked-his-vehicle-in-a-reserved-spot-in-nlb).

    The National Library (NLB) was quick to jump to the defence of Minister Ong and said, “there are a total of 3 car park lots designated for invited guests.     What NLB did not say was, why the Minister cannot be dropped off at a convenient spot by his bodyguard/driver and be picked up later when the event is over.

    All Ministers are assigned bodyguards, who often also double up as the Ministers drivers. When Ministers have to attend official functions, besides his/her personal bodyguards, another will be assigned to the Minister from the Singapore Police Force (SPF).

    This means that the Minister need not be deprived of proper security at an event even when the other driver is running an errand (like parking the car). Indeed this is what most older Ministers do and they are mindful never to take the public amenities for granted. The public too respects them for such considerations.

    Just like the NLB jumping to defend Minister Ong, a grassroots leader too has jumped in to defend Minister Fu. According to the Facebook page ‘We want Minister Grace Fu to resign’, Malaiya Maran S claimed that the event was organised by SPF and as organiser, the SPF has gotten permission from HDB to park at the red lot for a “short duration”.

    He thinks that “keeping aside 1 parking lot for the short duration isn’t too much” to inconvenient the public. “And on many occasions, when there is no nearby parking lot available, I have seen Ms Fu drop off at the vicinity and someone will valet park at another available location,” he added.

    imple logic would dictate that Minister Fu could be dropped off at the spot without compromising her security while her car is valet parked. And that is the right thing to do.

    Higher Parking Fees At 22 Popular HDB Carparks, During Peak Hours

    Drivers popping into the city area or a crowded hawker centre in the heartland have another reason to make it quick.

    Parking at 22 popular Housing Board-managed carparks across the island has become more expensive during peak hours, with the HDB hoping it will deter drivers from lingering.

    This hike is on top of a nationwide increase in rates at public carparks that began on Dec 1. Overall rates increased by 10 cents to 20 cents per half hour, depending on location.

    But the rise is more drastic at the 22 carparks, generally sited in the city area and near certain food centres. For instance, rates at six HDB carparks in Rochor and Duxton shot up from $1 to $1.40 per half hour. The other 16 carparks also saw a hike from 50 cents per half hour to 80 cents now.

    An HDB spokesman said that this “differential pricing” model helps to better manage parking demand in the city. Season parking holders are not affected.

    News of the changes drew mixed reactions from business owners and motorists who frequent these areas. At Bras Basah Complex, carpark fees went up to $1.40 per half hour for most of the day, worrying shopkeepers who believe it discourages customers from dropping by.

    Said Mr Richard Cho, 55, a watch dealer at Heng Wah Watch and Pen Company: “We are already seeing a 20 per cent drop in walk-in customers this month due to the bad economy, and the increase in parking fees does not help.”

    One motorist, Mr Tng Kim Guan, 50, who works in a hotel, was unhappy when he first saw the higher charges at Bras Basah Complex. But he was later relieved he was able to find a parking space more quickly.

    He used to spend 10 minutes circling the carpark looking for a spot, but yesterday was able to get one immediately. “I am not sure if it is because of the higher rates, but I don’t mind paying a bit more if it makes parking easier,” he said.

    The mixed sentiment is also mirrored at Golden Mile Food Centre, where peak-period rates were raised to 80 cents per half hour.

    Several residents told The Straits Times they were glad the higher fees may discourage drivers from “clogging up” the Beach Road entrance to the carpark.

    However, hawkers such as Mr Jahabar Ali, 47, said the traffic situation did not change after Dec 1. “If the congestion remains and drivers realise parking costs went up, who will still want to come and eat here?”

    The higher HDB carpark rates are now similar to those charged by commercial carparks in the vicinity. For instance, parking at Bras Basah Complex is more expensive than at the nearby Odeon Towers, which charges $2.20 for the first hour and $1.10 for subsequent half- hour periods.

    Previously, HDB did not charge extra for parking during peak periods. It first started to do so in 2009 at The Pinnacle@Duxton and Tekka Market to “manage the high demand for short-term parking space during peak hours and encourage higher turnover of vehicles”.

    HDB and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) manage about 607,000 and 24,000 parking spaces, respectively. Asked if it will impose similar peak-period hikes, a spokesman for the URA said: “Many of URA’s carparks are located in the city centre, and it has been our practice to set our charges appropriately to manage parking demand in the city. This includes charging more if necessary during peak hours.”

    Ah Pek Parks BMW In Motorcycle Lots, Chides Motoryclist, Claims To Be Civil Servant

    So this just happened at the carpark opposite Ghim Moh market, 20 Ghim Moh Road.

    I walked back to my bike and saw a BMW parked next to my ride. Which was weird because I thought I remembered that space was marked out for motorcycles. So I looked again to double check, true enough, the car had parked in the space meant for not one, not two, but three motorcycle lots.

    At this point, the driver (a skinny bespectacled Chinese man in his late fifties?) alighted. He saw me looking at the markings on the ground, and asked if there’s a problem. Thinking that he might have been mistaken, I asked him if he knew he was parking over the motorcycle lots.

    Guess what? He retorted in a challenging tone that I had my own parking space, and that I shouldn’t care. Said he ‘wasn’t parking’, then proceeded to lock his car and walk away.

    I don’t know why, I took a photo of his beautifully parked car.
    He came back and asked if I took his photo (he must have been lurking around), looking half worried and half frustrated.

    (No Uncle, you are not Brad Pitt, why would I want to take your photo?)

    I told him since he didn’t do anything wrong, he has nothing to worry about.

    His retaliation? He pompously announced that since I took ‘his photo’, he would take mine as well. I gladly obliged.
    (Sure, be my guest. My lovely Vespa is parked perfectly within my bike lot).

    You know, under normal circumstances, I might have just let it go. I’ve never reported errant drivers, I don’t know which authority is in charge, and it’s really just too much trouble. But what this uncle said next really made me want to do something about it.

    If he weren’t so obnoxiously rude, I might have let it go. He threatened me.

    ‘DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I’M A CIVIL SERVANT YOU KNOW!’

    (Wrong threat. I used to be a civil servant and some part of me still feels like I’m part of the service; so this only made my blood boil. What a disgrace you are to the rest of the responsible, hardworking civil servants I know!)

    ‘YOU DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE MESSING WITH! YOU ARE PLAYING WITH YOUR ARSE!’

    (Hmm, what kind of a metaphor is that?)

    All the while ranting that he’s ‘not parking’, ‘not parking’. At which point I pointed out the red painted words on the ground to him – ‘NO PARKING’.

    Mr All-Important-Civil-Servant, if you didn’t do anything wrong, why did you hastily drive away then? All the while reminding me loudly that I’m ‘playing with my arse’.

    Mr All-Important-Civil-Servant, you are a disgrace to the public administration. I humbly suggest you use your Skillsfuture credits for a parking refresher course. Or basic etiquette. Or language improvement.

    This would have been wonderful material for a teachable moment. What a waste!

    Just for you, I’m going to educate myself on the procedures of reporting errant parking offenders. And don’t worry, it’s no trouble at all.
