Robin Costume Among Those Confiscated During Raid Of Gay Party In Jakarta

JAKARTA • Indonesian police have detained 141 men who were allegedly holding a gay party at a sauna, an official said yesterday, the latest sign of a backlash against homosexuals in the Muslim-majority country.

Officers had on Sunday night raided a building in the capital Jakarta, called Atlantis, that houses a sauna and a gym, and halted an event they said was called “The Wild One”.

“Our officers did an undercover investigation and raided the place on Sunday,” said senior detective Nasriadi, who goes by one name.

Homosexuality and gay sex are legal everywhere in Indonesia except in conservative Aceh province, but Mr Nasriadi said that 10 of those arrested in the Jakarta raid could be charged under Indonesia’s tough anti-pornography laws.

The 10 men include the alleged organisers of the event as well as those suspected of being prostitutes and striptease dancers. Those found guilty of breaking the laws face up to 10 years in jail.

The others detained are still being questioned by police as potential witnesses in the case, the detective said.

  • PAP: DAG-Designate, Hri Kumar, No Longer Party Member

PAP: DAG-Designate, Hri Kumar, No Longer Party Member

Deputy Attorney-General-designate Hri Kumar Nair is no longer a member of the People’s Action Party (PAP), the party said on Friday (Feb 17) in response to TODAY’s queries, although it declined to say when Mr Nair had resigned.

Mr Nair’s appointment, which will take effect next month, was announced on Thursday.

It marks the first time an ex-lawmaker will take on the State’s prosecutorial function.

As a lawyer, Mr Nair, 50, acted in a wide range of litigation and arbitration matters.

He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2008. He became Member of Parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC in 2006 and later headed the Government Parliamentary Committees for Home Affairs and Law.

He served two terms before quitting politics just before the 2015 General Election, citing his wife’s diagnosis of lymphoma in 2012, which made him relook his priorities.

Lawyers and legal academics dismissed concerns about partisanship as insignificant.

However, lawyer Sylvia Lim, who is also chairman of the opposition Workers’ Party — which has been criticised by Mr Nair on several occasions, including over the financial management lapses by the WP-run Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council — called the appointment “not ideal”.

She added: “It is critical that persons entrusted with vast prosecutorial discretion act in the public interest, and not for partisan political gain … Whether my concerns prove to be founded or otherwise — remains to be seen”.

Mr Nair could not be reached for comments. During his term as an MP, Mr Nair spoke on several issues and had several run-ins with the WP, including over the financial management lapses by the WP-run Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council.

During a rave party in Bali on 20 June 2014, English deejays Stanton Warriors uploaded a photo of an asian woman on their official Stanton Warriors Facebook page.

The asian woman had pasted words that resembles ‘Allah’ on her bra.

The photo had created an uproar amongst Muslims, who felt it was offensive and insensitive. Several Muslims urged the admin of Facebook page to remove the photo. So far, no such action has been taken by the admins. In fact it has drawn alot of support from non-Muslims who showered numerous criticisms on the religion Islam and Muslims.

Stanton Warriors are British deejays and production duo consisting of Dominic Butler and Mark Yardley.

The duo have performed internationally with their infamous Stanton Sessions parties in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. Their name was taken from a manhole cover made by Stanton Ironworks, which seemed fitting with their style of underground, cutting edge music.

However, Muslim have felt that Stanton Warriors’ logo resembles that of ‘Allah’, a name used by Muslims to refer to God in Islam.
