  • Singaporean Lady Slams RSAF For Using Foreign Workers For Exercise Torrent

Singaporean Lady Slams RSAF For Using Foreign Workers For Exercise Torrent

A Singaporean lady Ms Tan Yulin wrote in to the Straits Time newspaper to complain about the supposed unprofessionalism of the SAF and to vent her disappointment at seeing foreign workers helping the SAF with Exercise Torrent. She lamented that getting foreign workers to “participate” in the exercise defeats the purpose of mobilising our own Singaporean men and to hone their combat readiness.

This was what she wrote into ST:

“I was disappointed to see construction workers removing a bus stop to turn Lim Chu Kang Road into a runway for the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s Exercise Torrent Getting construction workers to do the work defeats the purpose of the military exercise.

Besides testing the operational abilities of the air force to launch aircraft in a short period of time, it is also important to test the capabilities of our soldiers to convert a road into a runway.

It would have made the exercise more authentic if combat engineers had been activated to remove the bus stops, guard rails and lamp posts, without the help of construction workers.

Doing so would also have served as a test of the different forces working together in times of threat. Besides building teamwork and understanding among the different forces, such exercises should be a test of the operational readiness of our multi-disciplinary armed forces. I hope this can be taken into consideration for future airforce exercises.”

SilkAir Flight From Singapore Makes Emergency Landing At Hainan Island

A SilkAir flight on Tuesday (Jun 23) made an emergency landing in Haikou, on the Chinese island of Hainan due to adverse weather conditions.

Flight MI8334 departed Singapore at 7.05am for Sanya, a popular tourist destination in the south of the island.  The Boeing 737-800 was unable to land and was diverted to Haikou, landing safely at 11.05am local time.

A SilkAir spokesperson confirmed the landing was aborted due to strong tailwinds from a regional typhoon and arrangements are being made to transfer the affected passengers to Sanya via high-speed rail.

“SilkAir regrets the inconvenience caused to customers as a result of this diversion, but assures them that this was necessary in the interests of safety,” the spokesperson said.

Typhoon Kujira is currently causing strong winds and heavy rain in the region, with the China Meteorological Administration issuing a yellow alert for a rainstorm on Tuesday morning.

  • TransAsia Airways Plane Crashed Into River In New Taipei City

TransAsia Airways Plane Crashed Into River In New Taipei City

At least 12 people were killed and many more are feared trapped after a TransAsia Airways plane crashed into a river in New Taipei City, which encircles Taipei, on Wednesday.

According to the latest update from government officials at 1.52pm local time, 30 people remain missing and 16 others are injured. The extent of their injuries is not clear.

The ATR-72-600 turboprop aircraft with 58 onboard, of whom 31 are tourists from mainland China, was flying from Taipei to the offshore island of Kinmen when it crashed into the Keelung River at 10.26am, the quasi-official Central News Agency (CNA) and Reuters said. The plane apparently ramming into an elevated highway before falling into the river, CNA said. The crash happened shortly after the plane took off from Songshan Airport in Taipei and was suspected to be due to insufficient propelling force, according to United Daily News.

The pilot of flight GE235 radioed a “Mayday, Mayday” distress call shortly before the crash, but did not respond when air traffic controllers answered, the report said.

An eyewitness on the ground was cited as saying the aircraft was flying “almost 90 degrees on its side” and going increasingly lower until it hit the highway bridge and crashed into the river.

CNA posted on its website dramatic photos of the plane hitting the highway, as a taxi on the highway apparently swerved to avoid being hit.
