Five Injured, Three Arrested In Plaza Low Yat Incident

KUALA LUMPUR — Police arrested three more people this morning (July 13) following fresh fights that broke out after midnight outside Low Yat Plaza in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which reportedly left five people injured – three of them believed to be journalists.

Several news portals reported the early morning ruckus to be a continuation of tensions at the popular tech mall in the city’s golden triangle area that started following a disagreement in a smartphone store between a customer and the shop’s employees.

Citing an eyewitness, local news agency The Star Online reported a group of 50 to 60 men storming into a food outlet near the mall and beating up the patrons with motorcycle helmets around midnight.

Five were reported injured, with three said to be media personnel including a photographer and a journalist who attempted to protect the cameraman from the mob.

The Star Online also reported two riot police vehicles were deployed to the scene at about 1am, and added that sounds of explosions were heard at the area.

Another news portal Malaysiakini reported that several roads leading to Low Yat Plaza were sealed off following the latest fight.

Three individuals were arrested in the latest commotion, national news wire Bernama reported, citing city police chief Tajudin Md Isa who said the trio were aged between 22 and 25.

They were detained for provocative acts during a gathering outside the plaza, the policeman was reported saying but did not elaborate.

Rumours of the incident have been spread on the Internet, with some describing the fights as racial.

However, police have repeatedly said there was nothing racial in the melee.

“I assure that the police will carry out investigations which are transparent and fair to both parties.

“The public is advised not to listen, believe or spread rumours on social media. Rely on the police for information,” Mr Tajudin was quoted saying by Bernama today.

Yesterday, Bernama reported police had arrested a 22-year-old local man believed to be involved in a brawl that happened at 7.38pm.

According to the news agency, the suspect was caught by security guards at the complex for allegedly stealing a mobile phone and handed to the police.

However, the youth later contacted his friends who reacted by heading to the store where the attempted theft allegedly happened and assaulting the shop workers and damaging the store with losses estimated at RM70,000 (S$24,915), Bernama reported.

  • SCDF And SPF Used Real Foreign Workers In Riot Simulation Exercise

SCDF And SPF Used Real Foreign Workers In Riot Simulation Exercise

Just when you thought the human rights transgression in Singapore cannot get worse, it surprises you with what else it can do.

Apparently, the government wanted to test the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force on how they would respond if a riot occurs at the foreign worker dormitories.

“What if some quarrels erupt, leading to fights or worse?,” National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan asked on his Facebook.

“To test our response capability, the Police, the SCDF, the dorms operators and our grassroots organisations organised a simulation exercise recently.

“It was a useful way to network up the various agencies, and spread preventive messages.

“Prevention is always better than cure,” Mr Khaw said.

    Sounds like a disease?

No, actually Mr Khaw is talking about actual human beings here – yes, the foreign workers who build the flats that his ministry manages.

And to conduct the test, actual foreign workers were asked to “riot” so that the police and civil defence could then quell the riot.

It is uncertain why Indian workers were used or why it seems that a drill needs to be conducted specifically with foreign workers.

Mr Khaw also said that, “given the concentration of foreign workers in one locality”, “These are possible scenarios (that they can riot).”

As if it is not bad enough that the foreign workers in these dormitories earn the lowest wages in Singapore – as low as $300 to $500 every month, they are made to take part in exercises that discriminates against them.

On 8 December last year, a riot took place in Little India, after a private bus knocked down and killed a foreign worker from India. The government blamed the riot on the rioters having drunk alcohol.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had said, “We should not generalise a group because of some individuals. I don’t think that is fair or justifiable because their (foreign workers) crime rates are, in fact, lower than Singaporeans in general.”

Sure, and this is why we need to conduct an exercise on riot management at a foreign worker dormitory.

  • Muslim wants burning of incense banned in SG

    Salaam.

I think it is time for those who have upper respiratory ailments and asthma to have their views known to Mr Vivian Balakrishnan, the Minister of the Environment & Water Resources that we have had enough of this years of suffering, choking and having to run to the hospital in the middle of the night as our neighbours irresponsibly burn their incense right below our window sending dangerous and choking particles into our throats. We have the right to a clean air. I believe that neighbour burning of incense should be banned. Instead, the government should allocate particular locations where the burning could be done equipped with air pollution removal facilities. In the current dry spell with strong winds, it can dangerous as the grasses are dry and would catch fire easily. Secondly, the pollution is direct and at very high level.

    Wallahu a’lam.
