    Student Care Centre Guardian Jailed 10 years For Sexual Assault On 8 Boys

    “Uncle Wong” came so highly recommended – by his pastor, no less – that he was hired by a student care centre on the spot.

    He worked as a guardian at the centre, located at a primary school, for three years, and was popular with the students. He helped the boys with their homework and bought them sweets.

    He also molested them.

    The disgraced guardian was sentenced to 10 years’ jail on Wednesday (Feb 22) after a 14-day trial. He was found guilty of 13 counts of sexual assault involving eight boys aged between eight and 11. The charges include 11 for molest, and two for giving and receiving oral sex from an 11-year-old boy.

    The 66-year-old man had sexually abused the boys for three years, with his colleagues and his pastor none the wiser.

    “Instead of guarding and protecting them, you took advantage of them,” District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim said, calling the man a “predator”.

    The abuse came to light by chance. On Sep 13, 2013, two students and another guardian witnessed Wong slipping his hand under the table to touch a 10-year-old boy’s penis.

    The guardian reported him to the centre’s supervisor, who reported him to the human resources manager, and a decision was made to suspend Wong immediately.

    That night, the HR manager sent him a text message: “I received a very serious complaint about you today … I want you to meet me in church on Monday. You will be under immediate suspension from work … an investigation (will be) carried out.”

    Wong responded more than an hour later: “Can’t … figure out what went wrong or (what) the complaint is about, so will just have to assure my heart before God.”

    Then he called three of his victims to tell them the student care centre was investigating him, and not to tell anyone he had molested them. This showed he had “absolutely no remorse”, Judge Hamidah said.

    Three days later, the HR manager visited the centre to speak to three boys who claimed they had been molested by Wong. She quickly realised there were many more victims involved, and made a police report the same day.

    At his trial, the woman testified she hired Wong, who worked at the centre from January 2011 until September 2013, without interviewing him first. His was “a unique case”, she said, because he had come “recommended by his pastor, (who said) he was good with children and youths”.

    Even his victims, who testified against him, had nothing damning to say.

    One victim said Wong was a “caring teacher” who took the boys to church and bought them “ice pops and sweets”. Another victim said he was “friendly, kind and very patient” when helping the boys with their homework.

    The man plans to appeal his conviction and sentence, his lawyer said. He is out on bail – set at S$100,000 – pending the hearing of his appeal.

    A further eight charges against him, which involved more victims, were withdrawn.

    Man Rapes Single Mother At Party He Attended With His Wife And Kids

    They met for the first time at a New Year’s Eve party at the D’Kranji Farm Resort in Lim Chu Kang on Dec 31, 2014.

    The single mother, then 30, who has a four-year-old son, had been invited to the celebration by her cousin.

    Muhammad Farhan Mohamed Buan, then 28 and working as a mover, was also at the party with his wife and children.

    But that did not stop the father of three from preying on the woman and sexually assaulting her. During the attack, she feared for her life, but her desperate struggles and pleas for him to spare her fell on deaf ears.

    Yesterday, Judicial Commissioner Hoo Sheau Peng sentenced Muhammad Farhan to nine years’ jail and six strokes of the cane for raping the woman.

    He also sentenced Muhammad Farhan to two months’ jail for insulting her modesty, with the two sentences to run concurrently.

    At about 5.45am on New Year’s Day, Muhammad Farhan approached the woman as she was resting at a pavilion outside a chalet.

    They started chatting, and she asked him for a few puffs of his cigarette.

    Muhammad Farhan agreed, then asked her for sex in exchange for the favour. She declined, and told him to return to his wife and children.

    But that did not discourage him. Instead, he told her that his wife was asleep and continued to stay with her at the pavilion.

    NO MONEY

    The woman later told him that she was tired and wanted to take a taxi home, but she had no money.

    When she asked Muhammad Farhan if he could help her, he forcibly kissed her, then pulled down his pants and exposed himself.

    Feeling insulted, the woman scolded him and tried to leave after he offered her $10 for the taxi ride.

    He told her that it was not safe to walk alone outside the resort at that time, and offered to accompany her. She accepted his offer.

    At about 6am, they set off near a forested area towards the junction of Neo Tiew Road and Neo Tiew Lane 2.

    Muhammad Farhan then handed her the $10 before telling her that he had heard voices coming from a nearby bush and suggested that they check it out.

    Sensing something was amiss, the woman asked if he was crazy, and tried to walk back to the resort.

    But he grabbed her and wrapped his hands around her body before lifting her up and carrying her into the forested area.

    While carrying her, he jumped across a large drain. He then threw her onto a grass patch.

    The woman struggled and kicked him repeatedly, but she did not have the strength to fight him off.

    Terrified that she was about to be raped, she tried to scare him off by lying that she had Aids.

    But Muhammad Farhan was undeterred.

    He pulled off her pants and underwear, and raped her just as she was attempting to get up from the ground.

    While she was being violated, she kept pleading for him not to harm her as she had a son to look after.

    After the rape, Muhammad Farhan gave her another $15, and told her not to tell anyone about the rape before walking away.

    Still fearing for her life, the woman accepted the money, put on her clothes and walked back to the road.

    She then hailed a passing taxi, and the driver called the police with his mobile phone after she told him that she had been raped.

    As they were waiting in the taxi, they saw Muhammad Farhan walking towards the resort and followed him slowly in the taxi.

    When Muhammad Farhan returned to the resort, his wife questioned him about his dishevelled state. In tears, he confessed that he had just done something wrong.

    The victim left the $25 in the taxi.

    Muhammad Farhan was arrested shortly after at the chalet, and has been in remand since Nov 25 last year.

    For rape, he could have been jailed for up to 20 years, with caning and a fine.

    DPP: He is a risk to society

    Muhammad Farhan Mohamed Buan brazenly preyed on the victim, boldly propositioned her for sex, then raped her when she dismissed his advances, said Deputy Public Prosecutors (DPP) Kavita Uthrapathy and Eunice Lau in their sentencing submissions.

    The DPPs pointed out that the aggravating factors included the “fear and degradation” felt by the victim as she was raped, and his “continuous and callous” actions despite her cries that she was a single mother with a son to care for.

    Muhammad Farhan also showed reckless disregard for the victim’s health and physical well-being, exposing her to the risk of an unwanted pregnancy.

    He flippantly handed $15 to the victim after the rape, and left her in a fearful and traumatised stage, the DPPs told the High Court yesterday.

    “The entire incident might have represented minutes of sexual pleasure for the accused, but those same few minutes have exacted an irretrievable physical and emotional impact on the victim,” said DPP Kavita.

    “In those mere minutes, the accused had taken away the victim’s dignity, her right to bodily integrity and her sense of security.”

    HISTORY

    To adequately reflect the seriousness of Muhammad Farhan’s offences, the prosecution asked for a jail term of 10 to 12 years, and six to 12 strokes of the cane.

    DPP Kavita also mentioned Muhammad Farhan’s previous brushes with the law from 1998 to 2007, saying he had a lengthy offending history and posed a risk to society.

    His crimes ranged from misuse of intoxicating substances in 1998 when he was 12, and criminal trespass in 2002 when he was 16.

    He was sentenced to three years and 12 strokes of the cane for robbery in 2007.

    In mitigation, Muhammad Farhan’s lawyer, Ms Sadhana Rai, argued that her client had chosen to plead guilty at the first stage and was “forthright, cooperative and honest” about his role in the rape.

    She added that there were no aggravating factors as the victim was not injured, no weapon was used, and the rape was not premeditated.

    The lawyer, who acted pro bono, asked for a sentence of seven years and six strokes of the cane.

    She also argued that Muhammad Farhan’s previous offences were unrelated to the rape.

    They were committed while he was much younger and lacked guidance because he came from an underprivileged background, she said.

    After he raped his teenage niece, she was so traumatised that she tried to kill herself by drinking bleach solution and soap powder.

    Even after she fell ill and vomited, his main concern was to conceal his heinous acts by telling his wife not to take the niece to hospital in case it led to a police report.

    So the wife took the girl to a private clinic and hid the fact that she had swallowed bleach from the doctor.

    She later gave her $50 to keep her quiet.

    On Monday (Oct 26), the 54-year-old uncle was jailed for 20 years for raping, molesting and sexually assaulting his young niece.

    The food stall operator, who cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the girl’s identity, had sexually abused her seven times over two years, starting in 2010 when she was just 12 years old.

    After exchanging numbers, he asked her out for drinks one night in November last year.

    When she was tired and asked to go back to her hostel, the 21-year-old took her to a hotel instead, promising that she could rest there.

    In a brazen attack, Ng sexually assaulted the 23-year-old woman and even tried to rape her, physically assaulting her when she tried to fight back.

    During his sentencing on Wednesday, Community Court Judge Mathew Joseph had strong words for Ng, calling him ”devious” before sentencing him to seven years’ and two weeks’ jail and six strokes of the cane.

    A former bus driver was on Aug 31 jailed 19 years and given 24 strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting his own daughter, who was just 10 at the time of the attacks.

    The attacks took place over a two-year period in his flat.

    The man was divorced from the girl’s mother.

    After the attacks, he would tell his daughter he loved her and missed her very much.
