SDP: Important Questions For Government To Answer Regarding Seized Armoured Vehicles

The SDP is greatly concerned about the recent incident involving SAF armored vehicles seized in Hong Kong. The military and diplomatic implications are far reaching and may significantly impact on our country’s national security.

In this regard, there are immediate questions that the government must answer:

    1. Is there any reason why the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) thinks it is actually acceptable to ship our military equipment from Taiwan to Singapore via Hong Kong knowing fully the political tensions between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China?

    2. Why is sensitive military equipment transported using a commercial shipping company? Would MINDEF contract out such operations to civilian companies in times of actual combat? If not, why are we not relying on our naval transport facilities and testing their operational readiness during training?

    3. What steps are MINDEF and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs taking to secure the return of our assets without causing greater fallout with China?

It is important that Singapore maintains a strong and intelligent defence system. The latest incident raises questions on both fronts.

Damanhuri Abas: Military Action In Myanmar Against Rohingya Amounting To Genocide

This is happening in an ASEAN country. Its becoming a genocide. Countries behave only when they are pressured and cannot get away with abusing their own people or others. The International rule of law is selectively used and influenced by those with much power in the world.

This BBC report is juz the tip of the iceberg. There are much more brutal accounts via photos and videos on social media that we may have seen but seem helpless to do anything about.

At the very least we must raise our collective voice to create awareness via whatever platforms we may have some sphere of influence. We need to make people aware about this brutal killings currently taking place in that country.

ASEAN countries must pressure Myanmmar to stop this genocide of its marginalized Rohingya people.

    Al-Quran, Surah 4. An-Nisa (The Women), Verse 75:

    Translation:
And why do you not fight for the cause of God, while the weak among the men and the women and the children are crying: Our Lord! Bring us out of this town whose people are cruel oppressors! And, send us Your aid, and send us Your protector!

Mohamed Jufrie Mahmood: Advice For PAP – No Need For Presidential Grandstanding, Just Adopt Fair And Non-Discriminatory Policies

Now that the amendment to the constitution has been passed by parliament we Singaporeans, whether we like it or not, will have to brace ourselves with the inevitability of having an “elected” Malay President who in actuality is selected. And since the bar has been set so ridiculously high no other candidate except those from the establishment would qualify to stand.

Ironically the passing of the amendment coincides with the election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States.
It is not hard to guess who the Malay candidate would be in view of the scacity of qualified Malays. My guess is it would be either Puan Halimah or Encik Zainal Abidin Rasheed. Should it be Encik Zainal, who would have become Speaker had he not lost the election in 2011, would he be as proud as Donald Trump who had fought a long and bruising battle before clinching the presidency?

Would Ebcik Zainal, assuming he is the candidate, be able to command the respect of all Singaporeans in a skewed system tailored and reserved for him?

Would the Malays be proud of him? It would also be a slap on his face if as a Malay Muslim president he cannot even get the government to allow Muslim women in uniformed groups to dorn the tudung and rid Singapore of all forms of discrimination against Malay Muslims.
We don’t yet know what the actual PAP agenda is for instituting this ridiculous move. We don’t need to have a Malay, Indian or Eurasion President to tell the world that we are a multi racial and not a Chinese country. People of the world are not stupid. Come to think of it why should we worry about this? Can it guilty conscience for mistreating the Malays? Is the PAP leadership trying to con and impress the Malay world. My advice is, just adopt the right policies which are fair and non discriminitory to the minorities. And stop padding up our population with large numbers of PRC aliens if you really are concerned about being mistaken as a Chinese state. Let our population grow naturally and bond as a united nation. Your logic in instituting this amendment cuts no ice. It sounds so hollow and nothing but a scam. No self respecting and dignified Malay would want to partake in the scam.

Should Donald Trump carry out his threat to bar Muslims from entering the US Singapore’s head of state cannot even visit the country.

Mohamed Jufrie Mahmood: PAP Must Stop Wayang On Elected Presidency

Listening to the news about the proposed amendments to the criteria of a candidate for the elected president has made my kepala pusing.

    So complicated and confusing.

Among other things the financial criterion is to be raised to $500 million, effectively ruling out Dr Tan Cheng Bock. And I don’t know of any Malay who can fullfil the criterion besides ex or current PAP office holders. You see how dirty the PAP is. Why can’t they save us lots of time, money and effort by admitting that for self preservation they just want someone whom they can go to bed with?

    All the wayang!

After what they saw in the last PE, especially how close and dangerous it would be for them if their chosen horse were to be defeated, a Malay candidate of their choice would surely lose his pants even if he is an ex minister.

    Now you see the picture?

  • Online Gambling Just Another Revenue Generating Avenue For Government

Online Gambling Just Another Revenue Generating Avenue For Government

The SDP had opposed the PAP’s move to allow the construction of casinos in Singapore in 2005. The government’s rationale then was that there was money to be made off the gambling scene in Asia.

Not every business venture should be pursued just because it makes money. There are moral and ethical considerations too.

Gambling is a vice and its social ills are widely documented. Lives and families are destroyed because of addiction to gambling. Gambling also brings along other criminal activities such as money laundering, organised crime and sex trafficking.

Just this year, for example, two people were engaged in gambling related crimes. A Singaporean was caught laundering nearly one million dollars in Australia in order to gamble. In a separate case, a UOB officer stole a total of $95,000 from the bank to pay for his gambling habit in Macau.

For these complex and intertwining reasons, gambling – especially one facilitated by the state – should not be encouraged.

Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-jin disingenuously argues that the PAP, by allowing state organisations such as Singapore Pools and the Singapore Turf Club to conduct online betting, is not encouraging gambling.

He says that the move will, instead, allow that government to monitor the “very real dangers” of virtual gambling. However, he doesn’t spell out how the authorities will overcome these dangers by legitimising gambling over the Internet.

The truth is that with or without the state’s entry into the online world of gambling, those who seek to indulge in the gaming habit will find ways on the Internet to satisfy their desires. Providing additional and state-sanctioned gaming sites adds to, not minimises, the problem.

One factor that is prompting the government to enter into the online gambling business is that it sees its revenue falling due to poor economic circumstances. By getting into the act, the government opens up another avenue for revenue collection.

The problem is that gambling exploits the dreams and hopes of the poor who are most vulnerable to and who can least afford such activity.

There are many ways to develop a sound and mature economy without resorting to this kind of exploitation. Instead of making money from Singaporeans placing online bets, the PAP should free up the political system and encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. This will generate a productive economy and drive sound economic growth without adversely affecting our families.

This latest measure is another step in a slow but certain descent into turning Singapore into a city without any values, and one ruled by a government with no ideas beyond exploiting the people.
