Zakir Hamid: Toy Plane Lover Now High-Flier Colonel

At age 12, Zakir Hamid was in the spotlight as a compere on the popular Malay children’s show Aksi Mat Yoyo. At age 23, he made the news when he became the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s (RSAF) first Malay pilot in 1992.

Now the boyish-looking 46-year-old is in the limelight again for becoming the highest-ranked Malay officer in the RSAF, after he was promoted from Senior Lieutenant-Colonel to Colonel in June. As commander of the RSAF’s Transport Group, he has 400 to 500 servicemen under him.

But Col Zakir demurred when asked about what this achievement means for the Malay community. Instead, he told The Straits Times: “Frankly, I don’t think of myself as different. I think of myself as a member of the team.

“I don’t see myself exclusively as a member of the minority. I like to see myself as a role model for other young Singaporeans who aspire to be pilots,” said Col Zakir, whose wife is 46 and an entrepreneur. They have a daughter, nine.

Col Zakir admitted, though, that he did feel some pressure when he became the first Malay pilot.

“But I try not to let that affect me. My principle is the same – that if I’m going to do something, I do it in the best way that I can,” he said.

Col Zakir’s love for aviation goes back to his childhood days of playing with toy planes. He and older brother Farid would build balsa wood gliders that could fly with a plastic propeller and a rubber band.

“We would tether them to a line, stand in the centre, and the plane went in circles around you. It could go only up and down and do loops. When it comes to aerodynamics, I had, at a young age, understood how an aircraft flies,” he said.

Col Zakir, who also has two older sisters, was active in school. “I did a lot of things in school… from the Interact Club to track team to shooting to rugby to soccer to hockey… In Primary 1, I had double the number of ECA (extra-curricular activities) points required,” he said.

By 18, he had been to faraway places such as Chile on a three-month charity expedition for youth.

During his national service, he won the coveted sword-of-honour at Officer Cadet School; he graduated top of his class at James Madison University in Virginia where he studied geographic information systems and mass communications on a military scholarship.

In 1990, the then Guards officer got a chance to become an RSAF pilot, with hopes of becoming a fighter pilot. However, when he was in flight school in 1991, he was found to have a medical condition called sinus barotrauma, dashing his aspirations of becoming a fighter pilot.

“What happens is that your sinus cavities get weak and they get blocked,” he said. He could still fly – but only transport planes.

“You don’t have to go through changes in pressure as dynamically as you do in a fighter… In transport (planes), you don’t zoom from zero to hero in a matter of seconds.”

But he said it was a blessing in disguise, as flying transport planes has given him more opportunities to be involved in overseas missions as well as humanitarian and disaster assistance relief operations.

Col Zakir went on three tours in the Gulf in 2005, 2007 and 2008, of six weeks to a month. He flew the KC-135 tanker aircraft, which he calls the “petrol kiosk in the sky”. Their missions involve providing air-to-air refuelling for coalition jets in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“The temperatures in summer can soar up to 50 degrees (Celsius), with sandstorms and strong wind conditions. And, in winter, it can be very cold at night,” he said.

Col Zakir, who has held positions such as commanding officer of the 122 Squadron, which operates the KC-135, now oversees a fleet comprising the C-130 transport aircraft, the G-550 Airborne Early Warning aircraft, the Fokker 50 and the KC-135. He ensures that the crew members are ready for operations.

He still remembers his first taste of being a pilot: he was 18 and steering a friend’s glider plane up in the air in Britain.

“I enjoyed that experience, and really felt how it was like to be a bird, (and) to be able to manoeuvre the aircraft, the silence of being one with your environment.”

  • Beware Of This Molester Who Touched My Daughter’s Breast In Shop At AMK Hub

Beware Of This Molester Who Touched My Daughter’s Breast In Shop At AMK Hub

    Dear ASS,

This Incident happen on 02/08/15, Sunday, 3:10pm. I was shopping with my 15yrs old daughter inside the shop name called Hako (that sells a lot of accessories) in AMKHub.

I realize there’s this medium build tanned looking guy with the whole hair white hair that is always standing beside me and my daughter. Initially I thought he was just looking at the accessories beside me so I never really notice much on that too. Then after shopping for a while, I went to outside of the store and waited for my daughter as she went to make payment at the cashier.

Just few mins after I came out, I saw my daughter shouting out to the white haired guy and asking why did he touch her breast. I was in a state of shockness. My husband was with me and he heard about the commotion and straight away, he gave that man a punch in a fit of anger. The guy didn’t retaliate and kept claiming that he did not touched her.

I was very angry, I told him no point arguing now, there’s CCTV in the shop, so we shall wait to see the truth. I call the police immediately to report the case.

While waiting for the police, I asked my daughter what happen. She told me that the guy had bump into her twice in the store already. But the first 2 times only brush against her hand so she thought maybe it was accidentally. But the third time while she was near the cashier, the guy use his elbow and brush against her breast.

This is too much, obviously this is intentionally!!! Who in the hell would raise up his elbow and walk? Seriously! And 3x in a row at the shop, mind you, we were in the shop for 10-15mins only. The passage way of the shop is abt 1m apart, don’t tell me you need to squeeze yr way out in a 1m path way?

And when my daughter call out to him in the shop to stop him, he keep rushing out of the store and not responding to my daughter. Just FYI, my daughter called him and tap his shoulder. In a normal circumstance, if a normal person were to tap yr shoulder, would U at least turn back and ask wat happen? He didn’t! He just keep walking out of the store until he reaches the exit and my daughter scare that he might walk away so she grab his shirt to stop him. This is when he finally stopped and turn back.

And still can have the cheek to act very innocent and act as if we accuses him. I faster went into the shop and check with the shop assistant if we can retrieve the CCTV, she say no problem at all. I’m also very glad that the shop assistant was very helpful, she told me she will offer her assistance to the police in the event if they require any information.

Never in my entire life would I expect this type of thing will happen to my daughter. And luckily she’s brave enough to report the act. He should be aiming at her for quite some time already, this type of LAO DI KOR likes to aim for this type of teens gals. Because he feels that they might be scare to report it.

And I’m very sure it’s not the first time he had been doing this. I really hope that if there’s any witness to come forward to assist to make sure the fellow will be deserve the rightful sentence from the judge. So that he does not harm any of the other gals anymore. Attached with his picture, appreciate if all of you can share this story and make sure he does not have the chance to repeat the same act again.

  • Malaysia Cup 1994 Dream Team Reunites For SG50 TV Series

Malaysia Cup 1994 Dream Team Reunites For SG50 TV Series

After their sensational Malaysia Cup triumph in 1994, the footballers of that Singapore dream team seldom kept in touch with one another for about two decades.

Recently, they started meeting again regularly after getting together for a TV documentary series with the premise of reuniting individuals who played important roles in formative moments of Singapore’s recent history, but subsequently lost contact with one another.

Ex-midfielder Lee Man Hon, now 41 and the owner of a clothing shop that sells mostly sports apparel, “was thrilled to do this episode”.

“With our busy schedules, it is indeed difficult to stay connected with the whole team; I particularly miss seeing the officials and coaches,” he says.

Ex-defender Lim Tong Hai, now a senior lecturer in physical education at the Institute of Technical Education, says: “Frankly, we were caught by surprise when we were first informed about this reunion show.”

Their reunion kicks off the five-part series called Reunions on Channel NewsAsia tonight.

Although the majority of the team had met only intermittently since 1994 – such as for a charity match in 2009 – the players agreed that the spirit of brotherly jokiness had remained strong after all these years.

At a recent press event to launch the show, Lim, 46, says: “The team camaraderie is something that will stay with me for a long time. It was not always as rosy as it seemed to be. We had our ups and downs. But what made us stay united as a team and persevere was our team spirit and we were always looking out for one another, on and off the field.”

In an e-mail interview, one of the team’s star players, Australian Abbas Saad, concurs, saying: “It was a special reunion with a special group of guys. This team shares a special bond and friendship along with plenty of respect and love.”

The 47-year-old is currently the chief pundit at Astro SuperSport, a Malaysian TV network.

Ex-captain Fandi Ahmad, now the 53-year-old head coach of LionsXII and assistant coach of the national team, says that the team has been meeting regularly since it was reunited. “It is not difficult to stay connected at all. We meet up almost every week for a friendly game and catch up before or after the game at coffee shops.”

Lim adds: “Except for Jang Jung and Abbas Saad, who do not live in Singapore, the rest of us are constantly in touch. We communicate via a WhatsApp group.”

The series is produced by the channel to commemorate Singapore’s Golden Jubilee.

Executive producer Sharon Hun, 38, says: “We wanted to take Singaporeans on a trip down memory lane, but also to do it differently.

“Rather than just telling viewers, ‘These were the events that shaped our history’, we thought it would be better to bring together the people who made these events happen.”

She adds that open calls to the public on TV and social media were necessary to locate some of the individuals featured.

Other episodes in the series include SQ Girls, featuring some of the stewardesses from Singapore Airlines’ earliest commercials, and The Awakening, which reunites cast members from Singapore’s first long-running drama serial.

    • Reunions premieres on Channel NewsAsia tonight at 8pm.
