Woodleigh MRT Station Temporarily Closed, Suspicious White Substance Found In Several Areas

Police on Tuesday (Apr 18) said they are “managing a security incident” at Woodleigh MRT station after a suspicious substance was found.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) issued alerts on social media stating that the MRT station is temporarily closed, and they are at the scene with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

SCDF officers in protective clothing were seen at the station entrance.

Assistant station manager Mailyn B Carriaga told Channel NewsAsia that white powder (pictured below) had been found in three to four places at the station’s concourse area.

SBS Transit, which runs the North East Line, said in a tweet at 1.49pm that the station is closed and free bus rides are available at bus stops between Serangoon and Potong Pasir MRT stations.

  • Police Warn Of Impersonators Forcibly Seeking Donations

Police Warn Of Impersonators Forcibly Seeking Donations

Walking to Punggol MRT Station after school, she was surrounded by three men who looked like they were in their late teens outside the station’s entrance.

They claimed to be from the Criminal Investigation Department and demanded donations.

Nothing less than $10 would do.

But the Secondary One student from Peicai Secondary School was unconvinced.

They looked like gangsters, she recalled, and stared at them before walking away without giving a cent.

In the past week, messages have been circulating about the men demanding money from students and the elderly from various places like Lavender and Boon Lay MRT stations, Nex shopping mall at Serangoon Central and Tampines Bus Interchange.

Parents took to Facebook to post about their children’s encounters with the men at various MRT stations across the island.

The New Paper (TNP) was at Punggol MRT station yesterday, where the suspects had been seen canvassing for donations, and saw police officers patrolling the area.

The student, who was at the station, told TNP: “I knew the men were lying. They didn’t look like real policemen.”

On Thursday, the Police posted an advisory on their Facebook page saying they were looking into reports of people forcibly seeking donations in public.

They added: “The Singapore Police Force would like to clarify that we do not seek donations.”

They said only those with a valid licence issued by them or the National Council of Social Services can ask for donations.

Offenders can be fined up to $5,000 or jailed up to two years or both.

The police added anyone who impersonates a public servant can be jailed up to two years, or fined, or both.

Another student, from a nearby secondary school, told TNP her friend had also been approached by three men outside Punggol MRT station.

They showed her a certificate, claimed they were soliciting donations to help ex-convicts and demanded at least $10.

  • Sengkang Cops’ Quick Thinking Helped Them Revive Two-Year-Old Boy

Sengkang Cops’ Quick Thinking Helped Them Revive Two-Year-Old Boy

Police Senior Staff Sergeant Mohamad Azhar Abdul Aziz, 30, was handling a complaint from a member of the public on March 18 when an elderly woman dashed into the Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) carrying a boy, who was limp.

The officer knew something was wrong after taking a look at the boy and that he needed to do something, or the child would die.

Senior Staff Sgt Azhar and Sergeant Mohamad Adam Roslan, 26, were on duty at the NPC at about 2pm that Saturday.

Speaking to The New Paper on Wednesday, Senior Staff Sgt Azhar said: “His head and legs were dangling as his grandmother carried him.”

The frantic woman went between Senior Staff Sgt Azhar and Sgt Adam to place the unconscious two-year-old on the counter.

She was speaking in Mandarin in a panicked and shaky voice. Neither officer understood her, but both knew they had to act fast.

As Sgt Adam called for an ambulance, Senior Staff Sgt Azhar checked the boy’s vitals. There were no signs of breathing or a pulse, so he applied cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

    EMOTIONAL

Senior Staff Sgt Azhar, who has a daughter the same age as the boy, said: “I was worried because as I was trying to save him, doing the compressions, I was thinking of my daughter and I was quite emotional.”

Cradling the boy in one arm, he performed chest compressions with his other hand.

Just as he was about to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, he noticed the boy’s teeth were tightly clenched, indicating he was breathing again but experiencing fits

At the time, Staff Sergeant Joshua Kwek, 27, was on the second storey of the NPC having food.

When he heard of the case, he sprinted to the Sengkang Polyclinic next door.

The polyclinic had closed for the day, but he found a doctor who had not yet left for home and told him about the boy.

Staff Sgt Joshua ran back to the NPC to inform Senior Staff Sgt Azhar, and they rushed back to the polyclinic with Senior Staff Sgt Azhar carrying the boy.

They took him into the doctor’s consultation room.

A Singapore Civil Defence Force spokesman told TNP they sent an ambulance and that the boy was then taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

The grandmother of the boy profusely thanked Senior Staff Sgt Azhar and his colleagues.

Senior Staff Sgt Azhar told TNP: “I feel fortunate that he survived. I did not want a human being to die in my hands.”

Assistant Superintendent of Police Muhamad Iskandar Abdul Kadir, the officer-in-charge of the community policing unit for Sengkang NPC, said: “I am proud of them, and they have done the police force proud.

“I am glad they took the initiative to take the boy to the polyclinic instead of waiting for the ambulance.”

  • Woman Being Investigated For Lying To The Police

Woman Being Investigated For Lying To The Police

A 39-year-old woman is being investigated for allegedly lying to the police that she had been robbed, police said in a statement on Tuesday (March 28).

The woman lodged a police report alleging that a motorcyclist had snatched her handbag containing cash and personal documents sometime past midnight on March 23, near Block 214 Bedok Central.

However, during the course of investigations, police detected several inconsistencies. It was later established that the woman had provided false information and was not a victim of a snatch thief.

TODAY understands that the woman’s motive in filing a false police report may have been to find an excuse for losing certain documents.

She may face a jail term of up to a year and/or a fine of up to S$5,000 for knowingly giving false information to a public servant.

“The Police would like to remind the public that Police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies rather than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false Police reports or provide false information will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
