Two suspected suicide bombers have blown themselves up at a busy bus terminal in Jakarta, killing themselves and three police officers.
Five civilians and another five police officers were also injured in the attack, just after 9:00pm (local time) yesterday.
National police spokesman Setyo Wasisto said the blasts took place minutes apart.
“Tonight, to Indonesian citizens and all of us who are here at the scene, I express very deep concern,” he said.
TV networks showed people helping a victim lying on the ground and three policemen carrying another victim away from the scene.
Police may have been the target, with extra officers in the area to guard a torch rally to mark the beginning of the Islamic holy month Ramadan.
Police did not immediately reveal a motive but likened the attack to the events in Manchester and said it was linked to global terror.
“As you all know that there has been global incidents in Manchester during Ariana Grande’s show, there was an explosion there,” Mr Wasisto said.
“Then we also heard that in our neighbouring country, the Philippines, there was an attack from ISIS in Malawi city.
“Thus we’ve actually been prepared — but we didn’t know when and where it was going to happen.
“In my opinion, this incident is related to global attacks and related to some groups that have attacked several places.”
Authorities in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country have been increasingly worried about a resurgence in radicalism, driven in part by a new generation of militants inspired by Islamic State.
There has been a series of low-level attacks linked to Islamic State since January 2016, when four militants mounted a gun and bomb assault in the heart of Jakarta.
Eight people were killed in that attack, including the militants.
More recent attacks have also been linked to the group and targeted police officers, including in Solo in Java, but they have largely failed.

The deaths of a new mother and her infant daughter at a HDB block in Fajar Road last November were found to have been part of a “deliberate act of suicide”, a Coroner’s Court heard on Tuesday (9 May).
Koh Suan Ping, 29, had held on to her two-month-old daughter Jaelyn when she leapt from her 12th-floor unit on 23 November 2016 with “clear intent that they would die together”, said State Coroner (SC) Marvin Bay while delivering his findings.
Both were pronounced dead at the foot of the block at 6.58am and 6.54am, respectively. Her husband had not been aware of what happened until police officers showed up at his home.
Mounting anxiety, ominous message
The coroner’s inquiry found that Koh had appeared to be “generally well” throughout her pregnancy but, following Jaelyn’s birth, had faced mounting anxiety over her impending return to work and stress over needing to find a new domestic helper.
The sales manager was also concerned over the performance of her company and, in seeking to clear her work backlog, had voluntarily reduced her maternity leave period to two months instead of her taking up her full four-month entitlement.
According to testimonies from her husband and two colleagues, Koh was also upset about being unable to produce enough breast milk to feed her child.
SC Bay also noted how the Web history of Koh’s smartphone showed that she had looked up “What to do when there is no way out” in Chinese on 19 November 2016, just days before she died.
Koh had “avoided projecting her true emotional state, but her escalating stresses (were) evident in the messages that she had sent to her colleagues and confidants,” he said.
‘Toll on working mothers’
In his closing statements, SC Bay said that the “truly tragic circumstances” of the case highlight the “reality of post-partum depression” as well as the “toll imposed on working mothers” who have to juggle their childcare duties with taking care of their homes and meeting their professional career responsibilities.
He added that family members are the “first line of defence” when it comes to a new mother’s mental and emotional health, and encouraged employers to acknowledge the needs of working mothers with new babies while taking steps to ease their burden by “providing better work-life balance, flexible working conditions, and affordable, quality childcare”.

A 23-year-old Singaporean tourist died after reportedly jumping from the fifth storey of his hotel in Bali on May 6 at 2am.
Ong Chee Seng had allegedly been hallucinating after consuming magic mushrooms.
According to Tribun Bali, the police said the man’s friend had tried to stop him but lost control after the victim broke free.
The victim’s friend, Lee Jun Yu, who was also his classmate, said that they had bought a magic mushroom drink outside their hotel.
The victim had mixed his magic mushrooms with orange juice while Lee mixed his with chocolate.
Shortly afterwards, Ong said he wanted to jump but Lee tried to hold him down.
A security guard reported that he heard a crash at 2.15am.
The victim was found in grey boxers and a blue T-shirt.
His legs and arms were bent at awkward angles and he was bleeding from the mouth.
He died upon impact and his body was sent to BIMC Hospital in Kuta after an ambulance arrived at the scene half an hour later.
The Singaporean duo had arrived in Bali on May 5 and had planned on checking out yesterday (May 7).
The local police are investigating the case.
Denpasar Police Commissioner Hadi Purnomo said that law enforcement officers had been making efforts to eradicate the magic mushroom trade in Bali, but it’s been “quite tricky”.
Magic mushrooms have been re-classified as ‘type 1’ narcotics, making them illegal.

Facebook has called the killing of a 11-month-old by her father – which was broadcast live on his Facebook page – ‘an appalling incident’.
In an email to Reuters, a Singapore-based Facebook spokesman said: “This is an appalling incident and our hearts go out to the family of the victim.
“There is absolutely no place for content of this kind on Facebook and it has now been removed.”
People could access the videos of the child’s murder on her father’s Facebook page for roughly 24 hours, until they were taken down around 5pm in Bangkok on Tuesday (Apr 25), or about a day after being uploaded.
Last week, Facebook said it was reviewing how it monitored violent footage and other objectionable material after a posting of the fatal shooting of a man in Cleveland, Ohio was visible for two hours before being taken down.
The harrowing footage from Thailand showed Wuttisan Wongtalay tying a rope to his daughter Natalie’s neck before dropping the child, dressed in a bright pink dress, from the rooftop of a deserted building in the seaside town of Phuket.
Wuttisan’s suicide was not broadcast but his lifeless body was found beside his daughter, said Jullaus Suvannin, the police officer in charge of the case.
“He was having paranoia about his wife leaving him and not loving him,” Jullaus told Reuters.
Wuttisan’s wife, Jiranuch Triratana, told Reuters she had lived with him for over a year. At first the relationship had gone well, she said, but then he grew violent and sometimes hit her 5-year-old son from a previous husband.
She feared that something was wrong on Tuesday when she found he had left home with Natalie, whose nickname was Beta. She set out to look for them.
Murders, suicides and sexual assault have plagued Facebook despite making up a small percentage of videos. On Tuesday a Swedish court jailed three men for the rape of a woman that was broadcast live on Facebook.
