    Tan Lam Siong Will Support Lina Chiam’s Campaign, No Longer Contesting As Independent

    Last night, I was doing my usual walkabout. As I was driving out from the carpark near Block 108 in Potong Pasir after 11 p.m., I saw a Mercedez Benz waiting to park. It has just entered the car park and its headlights were shining in my direction.

    As I exited from my parking lot and passed by the Merc to my right, I noticed the lady driver struggling to turn her steering wheel so as to move her car aside to let me pass. As I drove passed the stationary Merc, I saw that the driver was Mrs. Lina Chiam. She was in her party T-shirt and looked rather haggard.

    Along the way home, I kept thinking about my encounter with Mrs. Chiam and felt sorry that she was still out at such a late hour. I recall her recent statement about this election being her last election and that she will be retiring with Mr. Chiam. I began to have this feeling of sadness and couldn’t sleep after reaching home.

    I contacted my team members this morning and shared with them my thoughts and feelings. And I told them my decision. I have decided not to contest. Instead, I will lead my team to show our support for Mrs. Chiam at her rally and hope she succeeds to regain Potong Pasir SMC and continue Mr. Chiam’s dedicated service to its residents.

    The 3-cornered fight in Potong Pasir SMC that was meant to be will no longer take place. I am sorry to disappoint all those who have encouraged me to offer my candidacy and to serve the residents of Potong Pasir SMC as their Member of Parliament. In my walkabouts over the last 2 months, I have come to know many of you at a personal level and appreciate your warm support. Let me assure you that notwithstanding this decision, I will continue to be at your service. For Potong Pasir SMC will always be my kind of town.

    PPP’s Goh Meng Seng Tries Unsucessfully To Diffuse 3-Cornered Fight In Potong Pasir SMC

    SINGAPORE: People’s Power Party (PPP) secretary-general Goh Meng Seng has tried to persuade independent opposition candidate Tan Lam Siong to join the PPP to contest Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) instead of standing as an independent in Potong Pasir.

    Mr Goh told Channel NewsAsia his offer was a “last-ditch effort” to avoid a three-cornered fight in the Potong Pasir single seat.

    He said: “I have indeed met up with Mr Tan Lam Siong yesterday night to make the last-ditch effort to defuse the potential bomb of a three-cornered fight at Potong Pasir. I have urged Mr Tan to join my team at CCK but unfortunately I have failed to convince him to come over.”

    “Although there is seriously very little time left, we still hope Mr Tan could reconsider our proposal. Nevertheless, if Mr Tan so decides to continue his campaign at Potong Pasir, we can only hope the best candidate wins,” he added.

    Mr Goh also posted a note on Facebook alluding to his efforts. “I shall now leave it to nature to take its course. What will be will be,” he wrote.

    Mr Tan confirmed that he had met Mr Goh on Monday night but had rejected his offer. Rebutting online reports alleging that he was planning to join the PPP, he added: “I think people are just speculating because someone saw me having dinner with Mr Goh Meng Seng. But it’s not true, I’m still actively walking in Potong Paris SMC and I will definitely follow up my plans to contest as an independent candidate for Potong Pasir SMC.”

    Incumbent People’s Action Party MP Sitoh Yih Pin will defend his seat. Singapore People’s Party (SPP) chairman Lina Chiam has announced that she will contest the single seat – held previously by her husband Chiam See Tong for over 27 years – as she did in the 2011 General Election.

    Independent Candidate Tan Lam Siong Now Joins SPP To Contest Chua Chu Kang GRC

    Independent candidate lawyer Tan Lam Siong announced that he will give up contesting in a 3-corner fight with Potong Pasir SMC and join the People’s Power Party (PPP) to contest in Chua Chu Kang GRC.

    Coincidentally, the former secretary general for the National Solidarity Party (NSP) is joining another former NSP sec-gen, Goh Meng Seng, who created his own political party PPP this year.

    The good news is Singapore People’s Party NCMP Lina Chiam will have a direct contest with a weak PAP candidate Seetoh Yih Pin over Potong Pasir SMC. In the last election, NCMP Lina Chiam lost by only 114 votes and she is poised to win Potong Pasir SMC given the increasingly bitterness of ground sentiments against the ruling PAP party.

    Tan Lam Siong: Respect For 100 Year Old Grandma Who Still Collects Cardbox Boxes

    I saw her struggly to push her trolley of cardboards up the ramp at block 113 of Potong Pasir and moved to help her. In a jiff, she was rummaging through the dustbin behind the pillar in the void deck.

    I squatted next to her as she was about to empty the contents of a paper box. I asked why she was collecting cardboxes. Her reply was that she needed to support herself. She lives alone in Punggol but collects cardboxes and old clothes from Lorong 8 Toa Payoh to Potong Pasir every day from morning 6am to night 9pm. When I asked her for her age, I could not believe her answer. She is 99 and turning 100 next April. She is undoubtedly the oldest collector of carboards in Singapore.

    Her eyesight and hearing are still good but her body is permanently arched as a result of constantly bending down to collect cardboards. She has been doing this for many, many years. Her 3 children have left her and are no longer in touch with her. She has a grandson, abandoned by his parents and cared by her since young, who is in national service.

    She makes about $20 a day, and sells about 150 kg of cardboards for a meagre $9. She is not receiving any financial help from the government as she finds it troublesome. She shares a one-room flat with a flatmate and pays her half share of the monthly rent which works out to about $200.

    I shuddered at the thought that someone who is almost 100 years old, has to be collecting cardboards for a living and has not received any public assistance. My heart sank at the sight of her wrinkled hands and rugged fingers.

    I asked for her permission to wheel her trolley around to get a feel of the weight of her trolley which was fully laden. When I pushed it back to her and asked where she will be wheeling it to, her answer startled me. She was going to wheel it to Lorong 8 in Toa Payoh and said that it will take her half an hour to do so.

    Life has been really harsh to this grand old dame but she displays a resilience that puts everyone to shame. When she turns 100 in April, let’s celebrate with her. Granny Chung Siew Ching. Meanwhile, if you get to see her around Lorong 8 Toa Payoh and Potong Pasir, do buy her drink and food. Thank you.

    National Solidarity Party’s Sec-Gen Steps Down

    National Solidarity Party (NSP) secretary-general Tan Lam Siong has stepped down less than five months after being elected to the position at the opposition party’s biennial central executive committee election in January.

    An NSP statement on Wednesday night said that he stepped down “to focus more on his passion for social and community work, and charitable pursuits”.

    Mr Tan told The Straits Times that he remains a “congress member” – or cadre member – of the party, with voting powers. He did not elaborate on the reasons for his stepping down or say who would succeed him.

    The NSP’s statement, signed by party president Sebastian Teo, said that during his tenure as secretary-general, Mr Tan had been “energetic and resourceful, putting in place new initiatives and introducing new perspectives into the party”.

    “Whilst the party is sad to lose him as our secretary-general, we would like to thank him for his contributions during this period, and wish him all the best in his pursuits.”

    Mr Teo added in a comment to The Straits Times that the next secretary-general will be decided on at a party meeting scheduled for next week.
