Thai Businessman: Forever Indebted To SMRT Taxi Driver Who Returned My $235,000

SMRT SHB1881L taxi uncle returns $235,500.00 to Thai businessman who left them in his taxi. Read what Mr Chukamon Khammat wrote to us which we reproduced every single grateful word that comes from his heart:

“I boarded this SMRT TAXI SHB1881L at clarke quay about 4am after a drinking seesions with some of my business partners and i am kind of drunk at that point of time. And has told the driver to go to Marina Bay Sand Tower 1 where i am staying currently. I safely reached but i forgotten my laptop bag,i immediately turns sober because that bag contains of CASH S$235,500.00 in it.

This money is given to me by investors in singapore for a business plans carried out in thailand. And i suppose to be remitting it today morning. My worries of my consequence of losing this money lead me to a breakdown and i cried in a totally lost manner in my suites.

My wife woke up in a shock as she sees me breakdowns.Upon knowing what happen she says gone…surely we need to bear this sum of money and we are dead because SGD $235k converted to thai baht is 6 million over . i suddenly say i think i go down to the taxi lobby to see if the taxi driver will deliver back the bag of mine..and my wife screamed at me saying “dun waste your time, its $235000 and not $23.50 ,if you are the driver will you return back the bag to the owner?” I kept quiet without a word but duno why my feeling tells me that i must go to the lobby to lookout for the taxi . But the problem i facing is actually i dun even remember the taxi number as i am totally drunk just now.

So my wife seeing the deep shit i have caused she got no choice but to followed me down to the lobby in a mindset that i am obviously wasting my time coming down to the lobby and i should think of alternative ways to raise this sum and we even think of mortgage our house at thailand and even sell off all our assets. But when the lift door open upon reaching lobby i saw a man coming in from the glass door panting and anxious going towards the reception and actually i dun recognise him but i recognise what he is holding onto. Its my laptop bag!

And i and my wife ran towards him and shouting for him and when he saw me he took a deep breath and says thank god…i found you sir…..at that time about nearly 5.00am we are like making a commotion in the lobby. I asked my wife bring up the bag and i urged the exinct kind hearted driver to wait as i need to buy him a drink and offer my appreciation .But we ended up with a short chat in my suites .the driver did not request for any monetary but only asked if i could give him a ice cold mineral water and my wife immediately get it from the hotel bar fridge.and i offered him $1000.00 cash for appreciation of returning this money .because seriously i ask myself if is me i found this money i dun think i will give back too.

And furthermore i get to know from this driver that he just started driving taxi and was a bankrupt in 2014 ,he starts all over from scratch of what he lost and is repaying his debts , this makes me more surprised because if i were him,i found this big sum of money i can start afresh and repay my debts..but the driver replies of why he comes back searching for me is because,he says he intends to go home after dropping me and he has drove off going towards petrol kiosk before going back home but upon reaching he saw a bag at the passenger seat and he said he immediate open the bag hoping to have my particulars so that he can returned to HOTEL to me.but he said he was shocked when he saw the whole bag cash and first thinking is that oh dear this man will surely goes mad if he lose this bag of cash.and even cost life..so he immediately rush to MBS hoping to get the hotel help by asking mbs staff can trace the cctv footage of the guest just now.

I am sincerely grateful and other than being thankful i duno what to say to this kind soul.so i hope i can make everyone knows and can learn from this driver kind deeds. And indeed there is still kind soul in this world.i am sure this driver will surely make a comeback after he earns and repays all his debt. Because his heart is Righteous and his failures previously is also a framed up and trusted too much on business partners.sorry if my english isnt so good you guys may help me rephrased the story.thanks.”

    sincerely

  • Taxi Justice – Cabby Drives Against Traffic To Chase Driver Who Hit Him

Taxi Justice – Cabby Drives Against Traffic To Chase Driver Who Hit Him

The cabby had stopped for a red light at a traffic junction when a silver multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) slammed into the rear of his taxi.

Before Mr Muhammad Ali Abdul Kadir, 41, could get out to investigate, the MPV sped off, beating the red light in the process.

Unable to jot down the culprit’s licence plate in time, Mr Ali decided to give chase. The pursuit took them past two more red lights as well as against the flow of traffic, but Mr Ali said he felt he needed to catch the irresponsible driver and warn others.

“I kept sounding my horn to warn other road users of this dangerous driver and tried to keep up,” he said.

“I know what I did was wrong, but I needed to catch and stop him.”

Mr Ali thought he almost had him after the driver crashed head-on into a police Land Rover, which was travelling in the opposite direction, and came to a halt.

But when Mr Ali alighted from his taxi and tried to open the MPV door, the driver reversed his vehicle, swerved it to the right and caused Mr Ali to fall

The MPV then sped off into the distance.

But the driver did not get far.

His reign of terror on the roads ended when his vehicle crashed into the wall of a mall carpark and burst into flames.

Yesterday, Chee Chern Chun, 42, was jailed 12 weeks, fined $2,000 and banned from driving for three years.

His 1.3km rampage began at 3.26am on Oct 3, 2014, when he crashed into the rear of Mr Ali’s taxi at the junction of Merchant Road and Eu Tong Sen Street.

Chee then beat the red light at the junction and drove along North Canal Road, prompting Mr Ali to give chase.

“I was very angry. I believe that you must be responsible for your actions. This driver just drove off. I couldn’t let him go just like that,” he said.

    ONE-WAY ROAD

Chee beat a second red light as he turned onto South Bridge Road, and a third one when he made a right turn onto Upper Pickering Street, which is a one-way road.

Mr Ali tried his best to keep up.

“He was going very fast on a small road. I kept honking, just hoping to alert other road users and prevent an accident,” he said.

They drove against the flow of traffic and onto a slip road from New Bridge Road, where Chee crashed head-on with a police Land Rover.

Mr Ali quickly alighted from his taxi and tried to open Chee’s door, which was locked. He also caught a glimpse of the errant driver for the first time.

“He looked blur, like he was in a daze. He didn’t look like someone who had been driving in such an aggressive manner,” he said.

Their encounter was brief as Chee reversed his vehicle and caused Mr Ali, who was holding on to the door handle, to fall.

Chee then sped off and drove against the flow of traffic along New Bridge Road until he reached Funan DigitaLife Mall.

He crashed through the mall carpark exit barrier and collided into a hose reel, causing his engine to catch fire.

But Chee continued his road rampage as he reversed his vehicle and grazed a parked lorry.

The MPV eventually came to a halt after it crashed into a wall and burst into flames.

Chee, who managed to escape, was detained by the mall’s security officers as the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived to put out the fire.

Mr Ali gasped when he heard the details for the first time yesterday.

“I thought he just pulled over on his own. I didn’t know it took his vehicle going up in flames to put an end to it. I hope he was all right,” he said.

Police officers found that Chee reeked of alcohol, had a flushed face and bloodshot eyes, and was slurring, court papers said.

A Breath Evidential Analyser test revealed that he was two units short of failing the prescribed limit of 35 microgrammes per 100ml of breath.

He later told the authorities that he had been suffering from extreme fatigue. Court papers said Mr Ali’s taxi and the police Land Rover suffered slight damage to their rear and front bumper respectively.

Mr Ali also suffered bruises and was given three days of medical leave.

Yesterday, Chee was jailed, fined and banned from driving for one count each of rash driving endangering human life, inconsiderate driving that caused the collision with Mr Ali’s taxi, and failing to stop after being involved in an accident.

Two other charges were taken into consideration for sentencing.

When told of Chee’s sentence, Mr Ali promptly replied: “Good.”

But he added that he did not bear any grudges against the driver and that the experience did not faze him from going back out on the roads.

“What was most important was that no one was seriously hurt or killed that night. And that justice is done,” he said.

I was very angry. I believe that you must be responsible for your actions. This driver just drove off. I couldn’t let him go just like that.

    – Mr Muhammad Ali Abdul Kadir, who gave chase in his taxi after he was hit from behind by the MPV

Chee Chern Chun, who is driving a multi-purpose vehicle, crashes into the rear of Mr Muhammad Ali Abdul Kadir’s taxi, which had stopped at the junction of Merchant Road and Eu Tong Sen Street.

Instead of stopping, Chee drives off, beating a red light.

He drives along North Canal Road and runs a second red light as he turns right onto South Bridge Road.

He drives along South Bridge Road and beats a third red light as he turns onto Upper Pickering Street against the flow of traffic.

Chee continues driving onto a slip road from New Bridge Road and crashes into a police Land Rover.

Mr Ali, who is tailing Chee, alights and tries to open Chee’s door. But he reverses and swerves to the right, causing Mr Ali to fall.

Chee drives onto New Bridge Road – again against the flow of traffic.

He drives to Funan DigitaLife Mall, crashes through the exit barrier and drives into the carpark.

There, he crashes into a hose reel, causing his engine to catch fire.

He reverses and grazes a parked lorry. He crashes into a wall and his vehicle bursts into flame. Chee is arrested.

  • Former PMET Unemployed FOr A Year, Now Drives Taxi And Shares One Room With Family

Former PMET Unemployed FOr A Year, Now Drives Taxi And Shares One Room With Family

    Dear Gilbert,

    My name is Terence.

I am a 48-year-old Singaporean who is currently driving a taxi. I am a father of 2 very young children, age 5 and 7.

I was formerly a training manager for XXX.  I was dismissed for not meeting targets.

However,  at this time,  no other manager was meeting targets as we were going through challenges brought about by the introduction of the DNC (Do Not Call) regulations in Singapore under the new PDPA (Personal Data Protection Act).

My dismissal was also coincidentally timed with a complain I made to my direct report about racist remarks made against me which I had overhead in a telephone recording between 2 managers who were reporting to me at one time.

To cut a long story short, I was unemployed for almost 1 year. Eventually,  I have to settle for a taxi driver position.

I do not have a flat of my own and my family of 4 are sharing one bedroom in a 3-room HDB flat.

I have applied for over a hundred jobs through various job portals including WDA and have been unsuccessful.  I was willing to take a pay cut of 30% of my last drawn salary but still I was unsuccessful.

Within 3 months of driving a taxi, I have been nominated for service excellence as a couple of satisfied passengers wrote in to SMRT commending me.

I need your advice oh what to do.  My highest education level is A levels and I made my way up the corporate ladder through much hard work

I was for 2 years the Regional Asst. Vice President for XXX. I have been in the call center industry for over 20 years and have trained over a thousand people from agents to team leaders to team managers and trainers in 6 regional countries including Singapore.

My wife who is an Indonesian PR got employment within 1 week of getting her PR status. WDA seems to be helping her more than me.

    Awaiting your advice and recommendations.

    Thank you and warm regards

    Terence

  • NUS Law Professor Who Assaulted Taxi Driver Sacked

NUS Law Professor Who Assaulted Taxi Driver Sacked

The National University of Singapore (NUS) law professor who was sentenced to four months in jail for attacking a cabby has reportedly been sacked.

A NUS spokesman was quoted as saying that 43-year-old Sundram Peter Soosay had been fired on Monday. His academic profile had also been removed from the website of the law faculty, although his picture and name was still listed on the administration page as of Thursday night.

On June 26, the day Soosay was sentenced, an NUS spokesman had told The Straits Times: “The university expects all members of its community to conduct themselves in accordance with the law. Dr Soosay has been convicted of a serious offence. The university has suspended him without pay since May 29 this year, and will now initiate disciplinary action.”

Soosay, who was born in Malaysia and is a Singapore permanent resident, boarded Mr Sun Chun Hua’s cab in the early hours of Christmas Day in 2013 while intoxicated, and vomited soon after. He then alighted near King Albert Park, in Clementi Road, and walked away without paying the fare.

After the cabby chased him and threatened to call the police, Soosay handed him a $50 note. Instead of waiting for his change, he struck Mr Sun from behind, straddling him and punching his face repeatedly.

Mr Sun needed multiple stitches on his face and left arm, where he suffered a deep wound that exposed the bone, and had to be hospitalised. His injuries left him unable to work for 17 days, and it took him more than a month to regain the use of his left arm and resume driving.

Soosay, who initially claimed that Mr Sun was the first to attack had told the court through his lawyer that he would be appealing his conviction and sentence.
