Penang Technician First In Malaysia Imprisoned For Terror-Financing Offences Related To Terrorist Muhammad Wanndy

KUALA LUMPUR — A technician from Penang became the first man in Malaysia to be sent to prison for a terror-financing offence.

Judge Paduka Azman Abdullah, in sentencing father-of-two Bukhori Che Noor to seven years’ jail, said the accused should have known better than to get involved with terror activities.

“You should have known better because you are 35 years old and should know what is good or bad. The government is fighting the threat of Islamic State (IS) which is a new threat to the country, after communism in the early years.

“Anything related to terror is bad. What is it that you hope to get by getting involved in a terror-related offence? Do you want to go to heaven and do you want to help Islam?”

Bukhori pleaded guilty to providing financial services by allowing a bank account to be used for withdrawal and deposit purposes which benefited Syria-based militant Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi.

Bukhori committed the offence at a Maybank branch in Jalan Chain Ferry in Penang between November 2015 and June 30, 2016. He was charged under Section 130O(1)(bb) of the Penal Code, which carries a minimum jail term of seven years and a maximum custodial sentence of 30 years.

Bukhori, who was unrepresented, in mitigating for a lenient sentence, told the court that he earned RM2,000 (S$634) a month and had a wife and two children to support.

“I regret my actions and will never get involved in such activities again. I appeal to the court to impose a very lenient sentence for my offence.”

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Fadzlan Mohd Noor, who sought a deterrent custodial sentence for Bukhori, said the fact the accused had pleaded guilty should not be considered a mitigating factor.

“The court should take into consideration the seriousness of the offence and public interest. The IS (Islamic State) terror group is a global threat.”

A 20-year-old student, Hasrianto Matan, has also been charged with two counts of knowingly managing terrorist property by managing Bukhori’s bank account, and allowing deposits and money transfer from that account for the benefit of IS and Bukhori.

The offences were allegedly committed between March and June last year, through Telegram application under the name “Gagak Hitam”.

Last October, Malaysian police said they had arrested 16 suspected IS militants in six states, of whom 14 were believed to be part of a terror cell called “Gagak Hitam” led by Malaysian IS recruiter Muhammad Wanndy.

Netizen Schooled By DJ Dzar Ismail After Posting Insensitive Comments On Hijabs And Terrorists

Muslims around the world suffer from the threat of terrorism like everyone else on this planet.

Some people though cannot comprehend this and think that all Muslims are terrorists. They spout rubbish which only they think is funny, hiding behind faces of cute koalas.

Thankfully for us, we have Muslims like radio personality, Dzar Ismail.

    Malaysia, Indonesia, Tighten Security Net

KUALA LUMPUR • Malaysia is on high alert for the festive season – with armed soldiers making their presence felt at shopping malls, clubs and hotels – after its neighbour Indonesia foiled a planned Christmas Day bombing.

Meanwhile, Indonesian police will deploy some 155,000 personnel to secure the country during the Christmas and New Year holidays, reported Agence France-Presse.

Neither country is taking the terror threat lightly.

In Malaysia, larger malls have deployed their own security teams, numbering more than 100 men each, to complement auxiliary police, according to The Star.

“Certain malls go further by putting up notices to remind visitors about the steps they can take if they notice someone or something suspicious,” adviser to the Malaysia Shopping Malls Association H.C. Chan told The Star.

The use of closed-circuit television cameras to keep an extra eye on crowded shopping spaces has also been stepped up.

Still, Malaysia’s malls have stopped short of installing scanners and metal detectors at entry points, a common feature in Thailand and Indonesia.

Malaysian police said on Tuesday that they had arrested seven people between Nov 3 and Dec 16 for suspected links to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and for planning attacks in Malaysia and abroad.

Earlier this month, they revealed that they had prevented some 14 ISIS-linked attacks in the country.

So far, the only successful assault by the Islamist group in Malaysia was a grenade attack in June on a bar in Puchong, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, which left eight people injured.

In Indonesia, national police chief Tito Karnavian said security will be boosted at churches, entertainment venues and public gatherings during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. On Wednesday, the police discovered a cache of bombs on the outskirts of Jakarta and killed three suspected militants to prevent a suicide bombing.

“Police will beef up security after these (raids)”, said national police spokesman Martinus Sitompul. Intelligence-gathering efforts and the monitoring of social media are also being intensified.

While Indonesia routinely deploys security personnel for year-end celebrations, this week’s events have given the exercise an extra edge.

  • Jakarta Terror Suspect Worked As Maid In Singapore

Jakarta Terror Suspect Worked As Maid In Singapore

JAKARTA: A woman who was planning to be a suicide bomber had worked in Singapore as a maid.

Dian Yulia Novi was arrested in an anti-terror raid last week for plotting to attack the Presidential Palace in the capital.

The 27-year-old was arrested minutes after two men who delivered the bomb were ambushed by Densus 88, a counter-terrorism squad, in east Jakarta on Saturday.

A fourth man, who made the rice cooker bomb, was later caught in Karanganyar, Central Java.

In an interview with TVOne news channel broadcasted on Tuesday, Dian, who is from Cirebon in West Java, said she had worked in Singapore for 1½ years for a household with three children, aged five, nine and 11.

Indonesian media said she had worked here in 2014.

Dian was interviewed while in custody. She said she was “active” on social media and spoke in English while in Singapore.

While working as a maid, she wore a headscarf but not a veil, and she never took a day off, she said.

She had also worked as a maid in Taiwan for three years.

Dian said she was first exposed to radical Islam through Facebook while working as a maid abroad.

Said Dian: “On Facebook, I opened profiles of extremists, who had inspired me. I did not join any groups, just looked through but became more curious.”

She also collected articles and audio clips of religious teachings on the Internet.

When asked whether she feared God’s wrath for wanting to hurt people on a massive scale, she said: “This suicide bombing is not about me feeling hopeless and wanting to end my life but to get the blessing from God and get priority in jihad ‘fisabilillah’.

“It is an Arabic expression which means ‘struggle for the sake of Allah’.”

She said she was introduced to her husband, Nur Solihin, one of the three arrested in the raid, by somebody on social media, and she communicated with him on Telegram, an instant messaging service.

They got married three months ago, despite Dian knowing he was already married and has children.

The couple had not even exchanged photographs or met each other.

Dian did not turn up for her wedding, sending a representative for the marriage solemnisation, she said.
