Amir Ukays Disiasat PDRM, Dipercayai Miliki Senjata Api

Amir enggan mengulas kes penahanannya kerana bimbang menggangu siasatan pihak berkuasa.

  • Malaysian Singer Yuna Hopes Her Music Speaks For Itself

Malaysian Singer Yuna Hopes Her Music Speaks For Itself

Since her move to Los Angeles five years ago, Malaysian singer Yunahas gained a strong following in the US.

Fans fell in love with her dreamy, soulful voice in hits like Falling and Come Back, which are from her second international album Nocturnal (2013).

But it is not only her music that has piqued stateside interest.

As a hijab-wearing Muslim musician, the 28-year-old is a rarity in the US music scene and her modest yet chic style has become a talking point in the industry.

The New York Timeseven labelled her “the poster girl for a group of young Malaysian Muslim women, dubbed hijabsters, or hipsters who wear the hijab”.

Not one for labels, the Kedah-born Yuna, whose real name is Yunalis Zarai, told The New Paper yesterday: “I’m not hiding the fact that I’m Muslim and a singer-songwriter.

“I don’t like to be put in a box or labelled a certain way, but if people can relate to me in that way, then, why not?

“I’m hoping my music speaks for itself. I don’t want the element of shock where people go, ‘Oh my God, she’s Muslim!’.”

Yuna was in town for a concert at the MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands last night. Tomorrow, she performs in Kuala Lumpur.

The founder-designer of fashion and lifestyle label November Culturealso fronted a Uniqlo campaign in July.

    DESIGNED BY FRIEND

The Hana Tajima For Uniqlo clothing line, designed by her good friend, UK-born fashion blogger-designer Hana Tajima, targets women who would like to dress modestly. It is available in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

This marketing move, as well as Swedish fashion giant H&M’s recent advertisement which features its first hijab-wearing Muslim model Mariah Idrissi, is something Yuna celebrates.

“I think it’s empowering and inspirational, what Hana Tajima is doing.

“I’m all about empowering others to feel comfortable in their own skin and giving them the means to do so with the right clothes,” she said.

“The world is slowly accepting the fact that there are people who like modesty and that not everything is about sex appeal.

“We have these values that we hold onto and we want others to accept us for that. We don’t want to be seen as sex objects.

“Just when you think all hope is lost when you watch MTV or the MTV Video Music Awards, a positive change is slowly taking place.”

The direction of Yuna’s music is also evolving. Her new album, slated for a February release, will see a more “mature and urban” sound.

She has worked with US artists like singer-producer Pharrell Williams and electronic act Owl City and her latest celebrity collaborator is R&B star Usher.

“I wrote a song (and) I thought (it) would be great if Usher featured on it. I reached out to him and he said yes.

“He is super sweet, down-to-earth and always smiling.

“I respect that he is a person who is in a place in life where he’s content and wants to try new projects. I admire his courage in exploring things with me because I’m not like other artists,” she said.

  • Pengakuan Sufie Rashid: Saya Dipaksa Melakukan Seks Oral Kepada Bekas Pengurus/Bapa Tiri, Arif Dollah, Ibu Tidak Percaya

Pengakuan Sufie Rashid: Saya Dipaksa Melakukan Seks Oral Kepada Bekas Pengurus/Bapa Tiri, Arif Dollah, Ibu Tidak Percaya

“Dia memang pandai putar belit cerita.

  • Stange Calls For 12th Man To Call On The Lions

Stange Calls For 12th Man To Call On The Lions

    SINGAPORE v AFGHANISTAN

    (Thursday, 8pm, National Stadium)

The national football team’s last match at the National Stadium drew over 45,000 fans, most of whom suffered as they watched the Lions dumped out of the AFF Suzuki Cup by arch-rivals Malaysia last November.

A little over 10 months on, Bernd Stange’s men have a vital clash against Afghanistan in their World Cup/Asian Cup Group E qualifier at the same venue on Thursday.

Whether the team will be backed by a similar crowd remains to be seen.

Aside from the fact the match is on a weekday night and will be telecast “live” on the Eleven Sports Network (Singtel TV Channel 109) and Mediacorp’s okto, Singapore will also be missing their two biggest stars, midfield duo Hariss Harun and Safuwan Baharudin.

And the haze is another factor.

Stange made a plea yesterday when he called on Singaporeans to turn out in force at the National Stadium and back the Lions.

“Together with our fans, there should be only one winner and that’s us,” said the German, just before the team’s training at the Geylang Field.

“We need your support and your help because we haven’t sold many tickets at this stage.

“Our fans can push us and we definitely need our fans.

“If something goes wrong, they should be the 12th man and we will do everything we can to beat Afghanistan.”

The haze seems to be the biggest concern.

The Football Association of Singapore said in a recent statement that the Asian Football Confederation will have the final say on whether the Afghanistan game, and the qualifier against Cambodia next Tuesday, also at the National Stadium, will proceed as scheduled.

Singapore fans are well-known for purchasing tickets late, meaning the uncertainty that hangs over the match will likely affect turnout.

Exact figures of ticket sales so far were not available last night.

    ADAPT

Stange said the haze meant “we cannot do what we want” in certain training sessions, but he does not want to make a big deal out of it.

“We had to slow down, we will follow the rules we have here in Singapore… because the health of our players is important,” he said.

“We will adapt. Afghanistan have the same problems, and they will also have jetlag.

“So we won’t make a big issue out of the haze.”

    Some fans are more concerned.

Kenneth Seet, a 37-year-old account executive, said: “I still can’t decide to go or not because of the haze.

“My friends and I don’t want to make a wasted trip and the safer option is to watch it ‘live’ on TV.

“It’s unfortunate, but if the haze is really bad, we have to be wise and stay at home.”

Others, like Faizal Kamal, disagree though.

“I will not let the haze get between me and my love for the Lions,” said the 27-year-old civil servant.

“Anyway, there’s always the N95 mask.”
