Actor/Director Rafaat Hamzah Released From Prison

After spending a year in jail for drug related charges, local actor and director Rafaat Hamzah is now a free man.

Rafaat, 49, was released from prison on June 2.

He was arrested on May 28, 2014 for the consumption of the drug, Ice.

“I have done a lot of thinking while I was inside prison,” said the director. who also recently announced that he had become a grandfather.

In an interview with Berita Harian, he admitted that he made a mistake and he also wanted to share his experience so that others can learn from it.

Rafaat said that he was at home, preparing to go to work when he was arrested.

He added that officers from the Central Narcotic Bureau (CNB) entered his house when he opened his door, subsequently arresting him.

He was sent to Changi Prison.

But rather than dwell on the dark times, he feels that his arrest could have saved his life.

“If I was not arrested maybe I would not be here now,” he said.

“Maybe it was all part of God’s plan… that I’m given an early warning before it was too late,

“What is important is that I don’t touch the ‘stuff’ anymore,” he added.

In 2011, Rafaat won the Best Lead Actor Award at Pesta Perdana 11 for his role in the drama Kalimah Terakhir.

Pesta Perdana is a local award show which honours the best in the Malay television industry.

He is currently not working full-time. His days have been spent visiting different mosques around the island.

“Rather than sitting at home, it’s better that I head to a mosque to meet old friends and also meet new ones,” he said.

  • Thailand Launches Muslim-Friendly Tourist App

    Thailand Launches Muslim-Friendly Tourist App

BANGKOK (REUTERS) – Thailand on Monday launched a smartphone app to attract Muslim visitors, something that could help further boost an industry which has been steadily recovering since a 2014 coup.

Thailand is predominantly Buddhist but parts of the south are majority Muslim. Known for its laissez-faire attitude towards travellers, powder-white beaches and as an aviation hub, Thailand draws millions of tourists each year.

Now its tourism body hopes the new app will help further boost Thailand’s tourism sector, which makes up about 10 per cent of its economy.

The industry took a beating last year as some foreign governments issued warnings against non-essential travel to Thailand due to political unrest and a May 22 coup, but it has been steadily recovering.

Efforts to welcome Muslim travellers to Thailand come amid rising anti-Muslim sentiment in some Western countries and recent Islamist militant attacks.

The new app will be available on Google Inc’s Android and Apple Inc’s iOS systems, the Tourism Authority of Thailand said in a statement.

With search and navigation features, it will help visitors find hotels and shopping centres with prayer rooms and halal, or permissible under Islamic law, restaurants, said Juthaporn Rerngronasa, acting governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Among non-Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, Thailand was ranked the second most popular place for Muslim travellers to visit in the world after Singapore by the Global Muslim Travel Index in 2015. “We believe this is because we have the required range of products and services for Muslim travellers,” said Juthaporn.

The app is available in English and Thai but will be expanded to include Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia.

Thailand expects a record 29.5 million tourists this year, up 19 per cent from 2014, its tourism council said last week.

  • The Minions Speak Bahasa Indonesia

    The Minions Speak Bahasa Indonesia

If you speak Bahasa Indonesia and you think you heard some familiar words in the latest Minions movie, you don’t need to get your ears checked.

The voice of the Minions, Pierre Coffin, is half-Indonesian, and confessed to having used some Bahasa words in Minion speech since the yellow characters’ first outing in Despicable Me (2010).

That’s why you would’ve heard words or phrases like ‘terima kasih’ (thank you), ‘kemari’ (come here) and ‘paduka raja’ (your highness).

“I find the Indonesian language very beautiful. It is like music,” he said in an interview, reported The Jakarta Post.

Coffin is not just the voice of the Minions – he co-directed both Despicable Me films with Chris Renaud, and co-directed the latest Minions spin-off with Kyle Balda.
