2 Workers Taking A Nap Run Over By Truck At Mandai Worksite; Driver Arrested

Two workers from Bangladesh died after they were run over at a Mandai construction site on Thursday (Nov 3).

A tipper truck reversing towards a work area within the Mandai Depot that is under construction ran over them, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) found in preliminary investigations.

This is the second reported fatal accident at the depot work site for the Thomson-East Coast Line this year.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they were alerted to the accident at 20 Lorong Lada Hitam at 1.15pm.

A 36-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 47-year-old man was seriously injured.

He was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, and the hospital was alerted to be on standby to receive the patient.

He later died in the ambulance on the way to hospital, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said.

The workers were taking a nap on the ground when a lorry reversed over them, according to an ST reader who did not want to be named.

“They were both sleeping on the ground after lunch. But they were not supposed to rest there. The lorry didn’t see them and reversed into them,” said a worker from the same site.

Both workers were employees of Gammon Pte Ltd, a contractor responsible for fire protection and electrical works.

LTA said it will work with Gammon and Jurong Primewide, the main contractor, to assist the affected workers and their families.

A spokesman added that they are “deeply saddened” by the fatal accident.

Police told The Straits Times that a 54-year-old driver was arrested for “causing death by negligent act”.

MOM and the police are investigating the incident.

In May, Mr Riyade Hussain, a 23-year-old construction worker, died after he became pinned under a truss which fell from a trailer.

Mandai Depot is being built for the Thomson-East Coast MRT Line and is expected to be ready in 2019. It will also house a bus depot.

  • Ustaz Abd’ Al-Halim: Layak Mengajar Agama Kerana Ilmu Atau Sijil ARS?

Ustaz Abd’ Al-Halim: Layak Mengajar Agama Kerana Ilmu Atau Sijil ARS?

    AsSalaam’alaikum!

    [ENGLISH TRANSLATION]

This happen to me at my place around 1 pm Yishun.

All of a sudden, there was a Malay man who greeted us as he looked through the window. Fortunately I was wearing my hijab. I returned his salam. The best part was he asked me, “Are there any babies in this house?”.

I replied no and asked him why he was asking. He fled.

I immediately locked my gate and door. Luckily the children were in the room so he was unable to see them. I don’t know what his motive was but I’m certain that he followed me and my children from the food court. Exactly at the point when I reached home and brought my stuff in and locked the door, he appeared at the window. My heart was beating very fast because of him.

Oh Allah I was so afraid at the time. So mothers, please be extra careful. I have to lodge a report so that I can check the cctv near my house area.

Syakir Hashim: Singaporean Elders Deserve Rest, Not More Work

As I walk into Changi Airport today at about 7 a.m, I saw many workers of old age either cleaning or moving the trolleys around.

I was reminded of an incident back when I was in year one in NUS. I went for lunch with my project groupmates in Utown. Three of them to be exact. All of them are foreign students.

We all went to get our meals separately. I was the first to be back at the table followed by two others. We asked each other where the 4th person went. We waited for a few minutes and she was still nowhere in sight.

Soon I walked around and I saw her helping an old lady clearing up tables. She was trying to help the lady pick up cups and rubbish from some of the tables, making the old cleaner lady discomforted.

I asked my friend what she was doing and she said that she felt bad seeing the old lady working so hard. Where she came from, no elderly has to work that hard.

That moment hit me hard. The fact that elderly workers are so common in foodcourts, malls and our airport, we sometimes forget to ask if its right to keep them working till that ripe old age.

Can’t we as a developed country think of ways to give our elderly the peace of mind and rest they deserve after serving the country and its economy over four or five decades? I’m sure if our leaders put their mind to it, innovative policies can be formulated to help our elderly, here in singapore.

Can you imagine your parents at the age of 70 having to work 8 hours a day clearing and cleaning at a foodcourt?

    Just food for thought.
