2 Workers Taking A Nap Run Over By Truck At Mandai Worksite; Driver Arrested

Two workers from Bangladesh died after they were run over at a Mandai construction site on Thursday (Nov 3).

A tipper truck reversing towards a work area within the Mandai Depot that is under construction ran over them, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) found in preliminary investigations.

This is the second reported fatal accident at the depot work site for the Thomson-East Coast Line this year.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they were alerted to the accident at 20 Lorong Lada Hitam at 1.15pm.

A 36-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 47-year-old man was seriously injured.

He was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, and the hospital was alerted to be on standby to receive the patient.

He later died in the ambulance on the way to hospital, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said.

The workers were taking a nap on the ground when a lorry reversed over them, according to an ST reader who did not want to be named.

“They were both sleeping on the ground after lunch. But they were not supposed to rest there. The lorry didn’t see them and reversed into them,” said a worker from the same site.

Both workers were employees of Gammon Pte Ltd, a contractor responsible for fire protection and electrical works.

LTA said it will work with Gammon and Jurong Primewide, the main contractor, to assist the affected workers and their families.

A spokesman added that they are “deeply saddened” by the fatal accident.

Police told The Straits Times that a 54-year-old driver was arrested for “causing death by negligent act”.

MOM and the police are investigating the incident.

In May, Mr Riyade Hussain, a 23-year-old construction worker, died after he became pinned under a truss which fell from a trailer.

Mandai Depot is being built for the Thomson-East Coast MRT Line and is expected to be ready in 2019. It will also house a bus depot.
