Woman Dies After Getting Run Over By Runaway Van She Tried Stopping With Her Hands

A 54-year-old woman, Madam Chong Lee Wan, was killed when she tried stopping a runaway delivery van with her hands, only to be run over.

The State Coroner found her death to be a tragic misadventure and said that Madam Chong had not fully engaged the vehicle’s handbrake when she parked on a downhill slope at Pearl Bank Apartments on Feb 11, 2017.

During the inquiry into her death on Friday (Aug 4), State Coroner Marvin Bay said that the van’s gear was in neutral mode during the time of the incident, and it moved forward and ran over Chong.

    He added:

“Given this, the brakes were not in a position to effectively stop the van from rolling downwards… I would therefore attribute the inclination of the pick-up and drop-off area, as well as the inadequate engagement of the handbrake to be the prime contributing factors for the mishap.

“The actual movement of the van… was likely triggered by the closing of the driver’s door, which caused the said vehicle to move forward and subsequently run over Madam Chong.”

The tragedy had happened during a routine furniture delivery run for Cristar Furniture, a family business which Madam Chong was involved in, reports The Straits Times.

Madam Chong and her son, Mr Lim, arrived at the driveway of Pearl Bank Apartments in Pearl Bank, close to Chinatown, around 10.10am on the day of the incident.

Mr Lim said that he recalled hearing a click sound when his mother engaged the handbrake of the Opel Vivaro van.

According to Shin Min Daily News via Lianhe Zaobao, while Mr Lim went up to deliver a chair, Madam Chong waited near the vehicle.

When Mr Lim returned 10 minutes later, after making the delivery, the van was nowhere to be found.

Security personnel nearby told him that the Van had rolled downhill.

Mr Lim later found his mother lying on the sloped road, the van about 50m from where she had initially parked it.

Madam Chong was conveyed unconscious to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) where she died about an hour later from multiple injuries.

Coroner Bay cited senior automotive engineer Tan Jiat Shee, who examined the van and found the handbrake at the first click position.

In the position, the handbrake would be ineffective, and the van’s rear wheels would still be able to turn.

The coroner said that even at the second click position, the rear wheels of the vehicle can still be turned with enough force.

Only at the third click position is the rear wheels completely secured.

    Coroner Bay added:

“(Mr Tan) opined that the full application of the handbrake – at six clicks – should be applied when parking the vehicle.”

He also reminded drivers to park their vehicles at designated parking areas which are level, firm, well-lit and clearly marked.

If drivers need to stop or park their vehicles on a slope, they should engage the gears if it is safe to do so, and use wheel chokes.

    He concluded:

“Drivers should ensure their vehicles are properly parked with the brakes engaged, engine turned off, starter keys removed and load or equipment lowered and secured.”

  • Suspicious Man And His China Gang Loitering Outside House, Even Took Photo Of Unit Number

Suspicious Man And His China Gang Loitering Outside House, Even Took Photo Of Unit Number

Beware of this man, he and his china gang has been loitering around my area for a few days or maybe longer.

Few days ago, i opened my door and was shocked to see a medium built china man suddenly infront of my gate. I panicked and couldn’t locked my gate. He don’t seems to want to walk away, so i have to confront him to buy myself some time to lock up the gate. Abit taken aback when questioned, told me his friend stay here but perhaps wrong unit.

Same day at 1.30am, someone rang my doorbell and as he was looking down all the time, I couldnt see his face thru the door hole. Asked hub to check him out. He stood there for quite awhile and he contl with the door bell. The hub managed to see his face and asked what he wants and he ran away.

To my surprised, he returned the next morning around the same time at 1.30am. My dear sister who stay opposite my block found out and inform us. This aroused my suspicion and, thus, make me filed a police report.

Yesterday (Sun morning at 10am), the hub heard footsteps at the door and he went to peep. What shocked him was he saw this man taking a picture of my unit no. He opened the door and confronted him. He kept avoiding the question and kept saying his friend stay here and probably it was a wrong unit. Same excuses given by the other man I saw days ago. The hub questioned him and asked him to show what he has taken. He accidentally show his we chat group on his phone with my unit pic in it and their conversations.
At this time, I took the risk to take a photo of him and he scurried away.

When his photo was exposed, my daughter and elder son recalled that they chanced upon him few times within the premises. Son said 2 days ago, he was in the same lift with him and he was holding a carton box.

Again I make a police report, this time with his photo as evidence and I hope the policeman wouldn’t disapoint us again.

I plead with all my friends here to be vigilant of things happening around us and look out for this criminal gang.

*My dear pal, please feel free to share.
You know who you are and many many thanks for your concern 😘

  • Alias Kadir Terpaksa Kudungkan Kaki; Ramai Peminat Masih Sokong Dan Doakan

Alias Kadir Terpaksa Kudungkan Kaki; Ramai Peminat Masih Sokong Dan Doakan

ALIAS SAKIT TERUK SELEPAS HARI RAYA

    ALIAS KADIR STABIL TETAPI LEMAH

INGIN TERUSKAN BUAT SINGLE BERSAMA HAMZAH ADON

  • Singaporean Rizan Wins WBC Asia Continental Bantamweight Title

Singaporean Rizan Wins WBC Asia Continental Bantamweight Title

He was floored at least five times by his younger opponent, but he refused to throw in the towel.

Singaporean boxer Mohamad Nor Rizan’s never-say-die spirit was rewarded when he knocked out Thailand’s Piched Chianawa in the ninth round to win the World Boxing Council (WBC) Asia Continental bantamweight title at The Pavilion at Far East Square last night.

Speaking to The New Paper at ringside after his victory, Rizan was delighted with his hard-fought win over the 24-year-old Thai.

“I knew his game plan, and I was able to read it,” said the boxer, who turned 39 last month.

“He knew that I am much older, and wouldn’t have the endurance.

“So he tried to go for a knockout from the fifth round onwards, but I was already prepared for a 10-round fight.

“My birthday was last month so this knockout win is definitely a birthday present for me.”

Rizan attributed his victory to killer instinct.

He said: “I didn’t predict that I’ll win by a knockout because I had conditioned myself to go the full 10 rounds.

“At the end of the day, it all boiled down to what I did in training.

    “My reflexes were instinctive.”

The first five rounds of the bout saw the two fighters throwing careful hooks at each other.

The fight sprang to life in the sixth round, as Piched threw a barrage of haymakers to Rizan’s body for a good two minutes.

The Thai’s valiant effort to knock down the Singaporean soon came back to haunt him.

Rizan pounded him with clinical jabs to his face in the ninth round, before delivering the killer blow in the 46th second with a right straight.

In another bout, Singaporean Zakaria Ismail earned a split-draw decision in his professional boxing debut against American Will Chope.
