Eugene Thuraisingam: Singaporeans Must Speak Up, Demand Change

Despite the resounding condemnation by Singaporeans of all races, Ridzuan’s execution proceeded.

The life of a 32 year old snuffed out just like that. Under the shade of darkness, away from the scrutiny of the newspapers.

That is how evil operates. The worst things we do are always done in secret and in darkness.

Despite Ridzuan’s death, it was heartening to see not just M Ravi speaking up, but this time, Singaporeans of all races, from all walks of life, have stood up to be counted!

The responsibility for Ridzuan’s death lies squarely at the feet of the Attorney-General, the Law Minister and his cabinet. That is the evil that exists.

We must be aware of this. We must speak up. We must demand change!

    Our five stars dim tonight.
Our son will be no more.
Killed at the hands of strangers.
At the orders of those who do not care.
    Our five stars dim tonight.
For a cruel and unjust law.
The fate of a life, in the hands of one. Who himself doesn’t really care.
    Our five stars dim tonight.
With our million dollar men turned blind. Pretending not to see. Ministers, Judges and lawyers. Same as the accumulators of wealth.
Hiding in the dimness, like rats scavenging for scraps.
When does the new car come?
    Our five stars dim tonight.
For a law that makes no sense.
A law that’s cruel and unjust. Just as its makers, executors stand.
Jeefrey has died. Ridzuan is next.
Killed not in our names, but by the decree of one.
Fear not my friend, we tread through this darkness.
The sons of this soil have spoken. Regardless of race. Regardless of language. Regardless of religion.
As our lungs shout as one, the stars will shine again!
    The people have spoken.

  • NDP Ticket Applications Open Next Tuesday

NDP Ticket Applications Open Next Tuesday

Ticket applications for this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) will open from next Tuesday (May 23) to Jun 4, the parade’s organising committee said on Thursday.

Singapore citizens and permanent residents can apply for tickets to the two preview shows on Jul 22 and Jul 29, or the NDP on Aug 9.

They can choose to apply for two, four or six tickets, although applicants should note that the lower the number of tickets applied for, the higher the chances of obtaining them, the news release said.

Successful applicants will be notified from Jun 26 to Jul 3 via the contact number provided in the application. They can collect their tickets from Jul 7 to 9 and Jul 14 to 16, between 10am and 9pm, at the National Gallery Singapore.

Those interested to ballot for tickets can do so via SMS, online, or at SAM and AXS stations.

For SMS, applicants may send a message to 8240 0050 with the format: <NRIC No> SPACE <Preview1/Preview2/NDP> SPACE <No of Tickets>

Each person is limited to one application, regardless of the mode used to apply. Tickets will be allocated via an electronic ballot, and not on a first-come-first-served basis. The balloting results are final and there will be no appeals, the committee said.

Each ticket admits one spectator to the parade, so children – inclusive of infants – must hold a valid ticket to be admitted to the parade.

Successful applicants to last year’s exercise will not be eligible for tickets to NDP this year.

This year’s parade will be the first at the Marina Bay Floating Platform since 2014. The parade’s theme, #OneNationTogether, as well as its theme song and logo were unveiled on Wednesday.

  • Malaysian PR Borrows From Loansharks, Lands Employers And Colleagues In Hot Water

Malaysian PR Borrows From Loansharks, Lands Employers And Colleagues In Hot Water

    Hi editors,

I am the General Manager of 2 local restaurants.

On 3 May 2017, at about 1.36PM, I received a call from an unknown number looking for my staff called Kenny Cheong. I told the caller that he got the wrong number and ended the call immediately.

Later, I actually got to known through my assistant manager previously that this staff had borrowed money from several unlicensed money lenders and licensed money lenders. He also told me that there were calls made to my restaurants’ phone lines and also to my kitchen manager, all looking for the same staff Kenny Cheong asking for payments.

My assistant manager also interviewed the staff personally and he did admit to borrowing from 14 unlicensed money lender and 4 licensed money lender. He also gave the contact number of some of our staff working at the restaurant to the lenders.

On the same day at about 2.08PM, my assistant manager texted me saying that he has received WhatsApp messages from a lender introducing himself as Eric. In the text messages, he asked for payment and sent photos of me taken from my Facebook stating that he knows I am the general manager of Kenny Cheong. He threatened us to pay up if not they will make a friend of mine lose his job at Marina Bay Sands.

The staff is currently working for the restaurant, but the company has decided to sack him.
