518 Penerima Anugerah MENDAKI Tahun Ini, Jumlah Tertinggi

Hasratnya tercapai apabila beliau mengikuti Program Penukaran Kerjaya.

  • Killer Of 4-Year-Old Taipei Girl ‘Little Light Bulb’ Begs For Forgiveness From Her Mum

Killer Of 4-Year-Old Taipei Girl ‘Little Light Bulb’ Begs For Forgiveness From Her Mum

A murder suspect accused of decapitating a four-year-old girl got on his knees and asked for forgiveness from the victim’s mother in a Taipei court on Thursday (Sept 22).

Suspect Wang Ching-yu, 33, has been charged with the murder of Liu Yi-jie, in a trial that began in June. The trial is held at the Shihlin district court.

Wang is accused of killing the girl, nicknamed “Little Light Bulb”, in front of her mother, Claire Wang, on March 28.

The prosecution is seeking a death sentence for Wang, but his lawyers have asked for a lighter sentence.

On Thursday, he asked the judge if he could apologise to Ms Wang.

He then knelt down and said in Mandarin: “I’m sorry, I admit I was wrong. I did not mean it, please forgive me.”

Ms Wang remained expressionless and ignored him. After 15 minutes, the judge asked Wang to get up, Taiwanese reports said.

“It’s too early to talk about forgiveness,” she told reporters on exiting the court room, adding that priority should be given to ensuring such crimes do not occur again.

“We should focus on investigating the cause of the crime, how the motive turned to action, and with this information, figure out what we can do, how we can reduce these incidents in the future.”

The seemingly unprovoked and gruesome crime shocked Taiwanese society.

Wang slashed the girl as many as 23 times although he did not know the family. His psychiatric state at the time of the attack has been disputed during the trial.

When he took the stand, he has given rambling and outlandish answers, and quoted from Chinese folk lore and even wuxia novels during questioning, reports said.

Prosecutors have asserted that he passed a psychiatric assessment from Taipei Veterans General Hospital. They earlier accused Wang of not showing remorse.

Mr Tengku Kamarudin Abdullah, 63, and wife Madam Fauziah Mohamed Ali, 59, were having lunch at a friend’s home in Skudai on Sept 18 when the incident occurred. They had just finished shopping in Johor Baru.

Mr Kamarudin, a taxi driver, had parked their silver Toyota Mark X two units away from their friend’s house when they arrived at around 1.30pm. When the couple were about to leave two hours later, the car was gone.

Mr Kamarudin told The New Paper: “We didn’t even hear anything. We only stepped out of my friend’s house and realised the vehicle wasn’t there.”

Their Toyota has a standard remote locking system. The couple lost all their groceries and a library book Madam Fauziah had left in the car, but no other valuables were lost.

She said: “We never leave our valuables in the car. I had my passport stolen from a car once, 15 years ago, and from then we always keep our valuables with us.”

Mr Kamarudin said that the car belongs to his eldest daughter and son-in-law.The couple filed a report with Malaysian police immediately and with Singapore police the next day.

Their eldest daughter, Madam Tengku Suhailah Tengku Kamarudin, 34, told TNP that they bought the second-hand car only last December.

“My husband travels a lot for his job, so my parents use the car more often,” she said.

She added that her parents would drive to Johor once or twice a month to do their grocery shopping. She said they had no plans to get a new car.

Car thefts are becoming a common occurrence in Malaysia, and Singaporeans have fallen victim several times.

Malaysian newspaper The Star reported last month that about 138 vehicles are stolen in Malaysia every day.

Car Crashes Through Road Divider, Cuts Four Lanes And Hits Public Bus In Eunos Link

A red Honda mowed through the road divider on Eunos Link on Friday (Sept 23) morning, cutting through four  lanes to crash into a bus full of commuters.

No one was injured, but the car’s driver, a man in a white T-shirt and bermudas, was seen shouting and pushing officers who rushed to the scene around 7.30am.

He had to be restrained by three Singapore Civil Defence Force personnel and lay on the ground for around half an hour as they spoke to him.

On-lookers told The Straits Times that the bus’ passengers alighted and took the next service. The SBS Transit driver declined comment.

Mr Chung Sew Meng, 42, was driving to work in Kaki Bukit when he spotted the red car, moving very quickly from the opposite direction, crash through the road divider behind him.

“He was driving very fast. It happened within seconds… I then saw his car ram over to (one) side of the road. I was just beside the car,” said the furnishing company director. “It was quite shocking.”

“Luckily, there were no (other) motorists, no motorcycles,” he added. “(The driver) might have been panicked and stressed. He came out and shouted.”

The crash roused residents of the housing estate nearby, attracting about 30 on-lookers who stopped to see what happened.

Among them was Mandez Siow, 16, a secondary school student who lives in Ubi Avenue 1. Hearing a bang from his room, he went out to see what happened and spotted the driver walking around.

Security officer Ahmad Juhari was on his way home from his night shift at work when he saw the accident scene from a nearby bus stop.

“The driver got violent,” said the 50-year-old. “The officers were trying to help him.”

  • Quah Zheng Wen Delighted To Be Granted Extension Of NS Deferment

Quah Zheng Wen Delighted To Be Granted Extension Of NS Deferment

National swimmer Quah Zheng Wen’s dream of winning a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games has been handed a boost after the 19-year-old was granted an extension of his National Service (NS) deferment by the Ministry of Defence (Mindef).

Mindef announced on Thursday (Sept 22) that the Armed Forces Council had approved Quah’s application for extended deferment this month, noting that “deferment may be granted to exceptional cases of individual sportsmen who are assessed to be potential medal winners at international competitions like the Olympic Games.”

Quah, who was delighted to hear the good news on Thursday, said: “I would like to thank Mindef, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), Sport Singapore (SportSG), the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) for their continuous support.

“I’m deeply appreciative of the opportunity to be able to train full-time and dedicate myself to doing my best and making our nation proud. With the extended deferment, it gives me the peace of mind to continue to train hard and work towards my goal of Tokyo 2020.

“Since the Rio 2016 Olympics, I’ve been very touched by the support received and would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support.”

Quah declined to reveal the plans for his next four-year Olympic campaign. However, he is believed to be considering two options. The first would be to remain in Singapore and continue training with the National Training Centre (NTC) squad under current national assistant coach Gary Tan and high-performance manager Sonya Porter.

The alternative would be to follow in the footsteps of national team-mate and newly minted Olympic champion Joseph Schooling, who is a University of Texas student, and head abroad to train and study in an overseas university.

Quah is understood to be weighing up the possibility of joining former Singapore swimming head coach Sergio Lopez at the Auburn University in the United States, with the two having developed a strong bond over the course of the Spaniard’s two-year stint in the Republic.

When asked, coach Tan said the SSA would meet Quah over the next few days to discuss the best course of action for the young swimmer.

“We will be sitting down with Zheng Wen properly following this announcement to discuss our plans,” Tan told TODAY.

“We need to discuss with various parties to make sure that we have the best system and support in place for Zheng Wen, who has proved with his performances that he has so much potential to go even further.”

Quah’s deferment comes just a month after Schooling was granted fresh deferment till the 2020 Games. Quah was initially granted long-term deferment in July 2015 to train for the 2016 Rio Games, where he qualified for the semi-finals of the men’s 100m and 200m butterfly with new personal best (PB) times of 52.08s and 1min 56.01s respectively. He finished 15th and 10th overall, respectively.

Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen said in his Facebook post on Thursday: “For the first time ever, we now have two Olympics medal prospects — Zheng Wen and Joseph Schooling — who are exceptional sportsmen and meet all the existing criteria for deferment. This speaks well of our sporting talent in our younger generation. I hope their achievements will encourage many more sportsmen and women to excel.

“I spoke to Zheng Wen and his father. I thanked them for their commitment to excellence, the many hours of training Zheng Wen has put in and many more needed for the next four years, for him to win in Tokyo 2020. I wished Zheng Wen the very best in his training and his ambition to win glory for Singapore.”

SSA secretary-general Oon Jin Teik said in a statement: “We are deeply grateful for the continuous support from Mindef, MCCY, SportSG, SNOC and our various partners, who have continued to support us in the journey to becoming a world-class aquatics nation.

“We will be working closely with … the relevant parties to develop the future plans to help Zheng Wen achieve his goals for Tokyo 2020.”
