Embracing Ramadan – Help Children In Single-Parent Families To Break Poverty Cycle

Visited this single-parent Malay family at their one-room rental flat in Marsling.

Reminded me of my growing up years when my parents were staying in such housing for about 16 odd years before we could afford to buy our own place.

I grew up sleeping on the floor with a mattress and learn to appreciate what I have while growing up.

I spent alot of my growing up years poring over novels from the Famous Five series to Alfred Hitchcock thrillers as they allowed me to escape into another world.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank the many Good Samaritan who bought milk powder, pampers and food grocery for the young family when we publicised their request for assistance.

One of their 8-year-old daughter is also being sponsored in our sponsor-a-child programme for children living in vulnerable condition.

Some of you have contributed one-off financial help for the needy family.

It broke my heart to hear that the family does not have any Macdonald meals before due to the cost factor and they only bought the $2 burger for the kids.

We also agree to break fast with the family during the Ramadan fasting month to foster community goodwill.

If you welcome us to break fast with you at your home, please let us know. We are more than willing to do so.

Editor’s note: not all the kids in the photo belong to single mum Suriani – some are from the neighbouring unit next door.

  • Andrew Loh: Governement Is Hypocritical In Its Handling of Singlish

Andrew Loh: Governement Is Hypocritical In Its Handling of Singlish

I don’t understand how the Prime Minister himself can dissuade Singaporeans from speaking Singlish, and his press secretary even finding it necessary to write to a foreign publication to disabuse a fellow Singaporean poet for being supportive of Singlish – and at the same time, the government have its Tourism Board spend taxpayers’ money to create a slick 3-minute video using that same Singlish to attract tourists.

And in your “Little Black Book” publication, a guide for tourists, you describe Singlish as “Singapore’s unique gift to the English-speaking world.”

A gift to the world but Singaporeans themselves should not speak or support it?

    How does that work?

I hate to say this but this is really hypocritical.

You tell Singaporeans not to speak the language but you glamourise it on a national stage at the National Day Parade 2015, and you also use it to attract tourists, and your MPs and ministers use Singlish during election rallies to portray themselves as ordinary citizens like the rest of us.

But Singaporeans should not use Singlish because not all of us have PhDs and are thus unable to “code switch”?

What lousy double standards you have.

Abdul Salim Harun: With Mdm Halimah Yacob’s Help, I Can Continue My Work

Last night is the first time ever in my life, I step into a Meet the People Session, held by the MP of my area, Mdm Halimah Yacob.

The purpose of my visit, is not to seek help or assistance, but instead, to clear and clarify some issues which have been bugging me for awhile, and also on the advice of a friend.

I go to the MPS with good faith and open mind, and I’m happy that she’s willing to accommodate me as no matter what, I’m still her resident.

Even though I did not manage to get the full information which I had wanted, I understand the position where she’s coming from.

Now with the informations I have, the work has just begun…
