Pelajar Melayu UniSIM Boleh Manfaatkan Subsidi Yuran Tuisyen Pengajian Tinggi (TTFS) Mendaki

    UniSIMConvo2012-01

IPOH: The two models involved in the semi-nude photo shoot here have been fined RM400 each in default of a months’ jail.

Magistrate Haslinda A Raof made the judgment on Wednesday after both freelance models Low Kah Wai, 27, and How Jo Yee, 21, pleaded guilty of causing nuisance in public at a traffic light in front of a bank along Jalan Sultan Yussuf here on Aug 25.

Both were charged under Under Section 268 of the Penal Code and sentenced under Section 290 of the same code, which was also read together with Section 34 of the same code.

Deputy public prosecutor Harris Ong Mohd Jeffery Ong said Low was only wearing black pants and shoes without wearing any shirt, while How was wearing white undergarments.

“Their actions caught the attention of the public and some photographs of them were captured and circulated through social media,” he said, while pushing for the maximum penalty of RM400 to be meted out.

“The country is made up of a multi-cultural society and their actions are unacceptable,” he added.

On behalf of the models’ mitigation, counsel Andrew Soong said both would apologised to the people who were offended by their actions.

“The have also cooperated with the police, pleaded guilty and save the court’s time.

“Furthermore, the photographs on social media were not posted by them and they did not have the intention to do so,” he said.

    Both paid the fine.

When met after the proceedings, Soong said his clients and their respective families were stressed out since the photographs went viral online.

He said they were mulling to take actions against those who published the photographs online.

  • Must Declare Money To Authorities If Amount Is S$20,000 or More When Entering or Leaving Singapore

Must Declare Money To Authorities If Amount Is S$20,000 or More When Entering or Leaving Singapore

SINGAPORE: From Sep 1, those carrying large amounts of money in and out of Singapore must declare this to authorities if it is S$20,000 or more. The current threshold is S$30,000.

Travellers coming in and out of Singapore with that amount of money – whether in Sing dollars or foreign currency – must fill in a form and submit it to any immigration officer at the Customs Red Channel or immigration counter.

The rule applies to cash or bearer negotiable instruments such as traveller’s cheques. A statement from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on Tuesday (Aug 26) said the amount is in line with the recommendations made by the Financial Action Task Force, of which Singapore is a member of.

“Criminals and terrorism financiers around the world have been known to use cash couriers to move physical funds across borders either to finance their illicit activities or to launder their ill-gotten gains. As an active and integrated member of the global economy, Singapore could also be susceptible to such illegal activities,” the SPF stated.

Cross-border cash movement reporting thresholds in the United States, Australia and New Zealand are $10,000 in their respective currencies.

  • Interpol Looking For Controversial Sex Blogger Alvin Tan

Interpol Looking For Controversial Sex Blogger Alvin Tan

Interpol is looking for controversial sex blogger Alvin Tan Jye Yee to face trial in Malaysia following his failure to return and surrender his passport to the court, his lawyer said.

Chong Joo Tian said Tan and his partner Vivian Lee May Ling went to Singapore to shoot a documentary last May but the lawyer was unsure if Tan was still in the island republic.

“The assistance of Interpol has been enlisted to locate  and bring Tan back to face  charges with Lee,” he told The Malaysian Insider. The Sessions Court had issued an arrest warrant for Tan.

Chong said it was up to the prosecution to decide whether to try only Lee in the absence of Tan.

Last Friday, the Sessions Court also forfeited the RM20,000 bail imposed on Tan after he failed to return his passport.

Judge Abdul Rashid Daud said he was dissatisfied with the explanation provided by bailors, Loo Ching Ching and All Kim Lian.

In July last year, Tan, 26, and Lee, 25, claimed trial to three charges under the Film Censorship Act, Sedition Act and the Penal Code.

Chong said the court, however, returned RM10,000 to the bailors as one of the three charges faced by the duo under section 298A of the Penal Code was struck out by the Court of Appeal on April 21.

This was because the charge of stirring hostility between religions was not applicable to non-Muslims.

The pair still face two charges under the Film Censorship Act and Sedition Act over their controversial “Ramadan greeting” posting last year, which contained the words “Selamat Berbuka Puasa (dengan bak kut teh… wangi, enak, menyelerakan)”, as well as over their blog’s pornographic images.

The duo’s postings last July 11 caused an uproar among Malaysians of all races for their insensitivity.

Following condemnations, the posting was removed and replaced with a picture of them eating ketupat, rendang and curry puffs. – August 26, 2014.
