Lee Hsien Loong Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will undergo surgery on Monday for prostate cancer, his office announced on Sunday.

He “is expected to recover fully” after the surgery, which will be for the removal of his prostate gland, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

The robot-assisted keyhole prostatectomy will be carried out by Prof Christopher Cheng, lead urologist at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), the statement added.

Patients with similar medical profile and treatment have a cancer specific survival rate of 99 per cent at 15 years, the PMO said, citing data from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre.

Last month, Lee had undergone an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan that revealed “suspicious lesions” on his prostate.

The 63-year-old prime minister decided on the surgical treatment option on the advice of a panel of doctors led by Cheng, according to the PMO.

In the meantime, Lee will go on a week’s medical leave, and Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean will take over as Acting Prime Minister.

Lee is a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed in 1992 with lymphoma, blood cell tumours that develop from white blood cells.

He was Minister for Trade and Industry as well as Deputy Prime Minister at the time, and he relinquished his trade post while going on three months of chemotherapy, after which his cancer went into remission.

    ‘All set’

In a post on his Facebook page Sunday night an hour after the surgery was announced, Lee said, “I’m all set for my op tomorrow, and so are my surgeon and medical team”.

He thanked the public for their concern, noting that he had already received “so many” emails, SMSes and messages wishing him well.

He also posted a photo of himself in SGH last month for the prostate biopsy that detected the cancer. In the photo, he explained, he has a pulse oximeter on his finger to track oxygen in his bloodstream.

“Ho Ching (his wife) helped me take this selfie of ET phoning home,” he wrote, adding a smile emoticon after.

  • Copenhagen Cafe Hosting Freedom Of Speech Event Atacked

Copenhagen Cafe Hosting Freedom Of Speech Event Atacked

COPENHAGEN — Shots were fired today (Feb 14) at a cafe in Copenhagen as it hosted a freedom of speech event organised by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has faced numerous threats for caricaturing the Prophet Muhammad. Danish police said one man was killed.

In a statement, Danish police said they are looking for the perpetrators who drove away in a dark Volkswagen Polo after the shooting shortly before 4 pm (11pm, Singapore time) at the Krudttoenden cafe.

The police said the victim was a 40-year-old man.

Some 30 bullet holes ripped through the window of the Krudttoenden cafe and at least two people were taken away on stretchers, including a uniformed police officer, the TV2 channel said.

“I heard someone firing with an automatic weapons and someone shouting. Police returned the fire and I hid behind the bar. I felt surreal, like in a movie,” Mr Niels Ivar Larsen, one of the speakers at the event, told the TV2 channel.

Ms Helle Merete Brix, one of the organisers of the event, told The Associated Press that Mr Vilks was present at the event but not injured.

“I saw a masked man running past,” she said. “A couple of police officers were injured.”

“I clearly consider this as an attack on Lars Vilks,” she added, saying she was ushered away with Mr Vilks by one of the Danish police guards that he gets whenever he is in Denmark.

The cafe in northern Copenhagen, known for its jazz concerts, was hosting an event titled Art, blasphemy and the freedom of expression, when the shots were fired.

Mr François Zimeray, the French ambassador to Denmark, was at the conference and tweeted that he was “still alive.”

The BBC news also said three police officers have reportedly been shot and wounded there, and two gunmen are reportedly still at large. They also said the area around the venue is under lockdown.

Mr Vilks, a 68-year-old Swedish artist, has faced several attempted attacks and death threats after he depicted the Prophet Muhammad as a dog in 2007.

A Pennsylvania woman last year got a 10-year prison term for a plot to kill Vilks. In 2010 two brothers tried to burn down his house in southern Sweden and were imprisoned for attempted arson.

After Islamic militants attacked the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine in Paris last month, killing 12 people, Mr Vilks told the AP that even fewer organisations were inviting him to give lectures over increased security concerns.

He also said he thought Sweden’s SAPO security service, which deploys bodyguards to protect him, would step up the security around him.

“This will create fear among people on a whole different level than we’re used to,” he said. “Charlie Hebdo was a small oasis. Not many dared do what they did.”

  • Over 100 Banks Hit By Sophisticated Cyber Attack

Over 100 Banks Hit By Sophisticated Cyber Attack

A sophisticated global cyberattack struck more than 100 banks in 30 countries stealing hundreds of millions of dollars, The New York Times reported Saturday.

Citing a soon to be released report from computer security company Kaspersky Lab, the newspaper said the attack involved malicious software that gave hackers long-term access to banking systems.

A group of Russians, Chinese and Europeans was able to siphon off around $300 million in one of the world’s largest bank robberies, the report said.

The money was transferred to bank accounts around the world in small-value amounts to avoid detection.

Hackers largely focused on banks in Russia, but millions of dollars were also taken from banks in Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United States as well, the Times said.

Hackers had such advanced access to the banks’ systems that they could force ATM machines to dispense cash at specific times and locations where hackers could pick it up.
