System Malfunction Forces AirAsiaX Flight To Return To Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: A system malfunction forced the pilots of an AirAsia X flight from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah to abort the flight and return to Malaysia on Sunday (Feb 8) , the AirAsia Group’s CEO said.

The incident sparked fresh questions on social media about the Malaysian airline’s safety record as it struggles in the aftermath of the loss of Flight QZ8501 in late December with 162 people on board.

“One auto-thrust not functioning properly. Actually okay to fly but we just returning it to base,” Tony Fernandes told AFP in a text message, calling it a “minor issue”. “One auto-thrust not functioning properly. Actually okay to fly but we just returning it to base,” Tony Fernandes told AFP in a text message, calling it a “minor issue”.

Auto-thrusters are systems that are used to ensure a plane continues to travel at a steady speed. Fernandes confirmed the Airbus A330 — operated by the long-haul arm of the AirAsia Group of carriers, AirAsia X — landed safely at Kuala Lumpur’s international airport late on Sunday afternoon.

Flight-tracking websites indicated AirAsia X flight D7172 flew several wide circles over the Strait of Malacca to burn off fuel. Fernandes called the manouevre a “routine” precaution as the plane was heavily laden with fuel that normally would have been used up during the several-hour flight to the Saudi Arabian city.

“Just burning off fuel as has lots of fuel as was going to Jeddah,” he said, adding that the plane would be changed and the flight would continue onward.

Explaining why the flight had to circle for hours to dump fuel, flight-tracking website Flightradar24 said the plane “needed to get weight down to make a safe landing”. It added that if it was an emergency, the flight would have landed immediately.

Although QZ8501 was the AirAsia group’s first deadly accident, it followed two other deadly Malaysia Airlines incidents last year that killed over 500 people and raised concerns among many travellers about the safety of the country’s carriers.

“What is happening with Malaysia and airplanes? This is really, really scary,” posted one Twitter user.

Flight QZ8501 went down in stormy weather on December 28 in the Java Sea during what was supposed to be a short trip from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared last March after inexplicably diverting from its Kuala Lumpur-Beijing course. The airliner, carrying 239 people, is believed to have crashed in the Indian Ocean, but no trace has been found.

MH17 went down last July in rebellion-torn eastern Ukraine — believed hit by a surface-to-air missile — killing all 298 aboard. Malaysia Airlines had previously had a solid safety record.

  • Tokoh Agama Singapura Ustaz Syed Hamid Syed Ahmad Alkaff Meninggal Dunia

Tokoh Agama Singapura Ustaz Syed Hamid Syed Ahmad Alkaff Meninggal Dunia

  • Have Chocolate Through Your Nose Anyone?

Have Chocolate Through Your Nose Anyone?

BRUGES (Belgium) — When Belgian chocolatier Dominique Persoone created a chocolate-sniffing device for a Rolling Stones party in 2007, he never imagined demand would stretch much beyond the rock ‘n’ roll scene. But, seven years later, he has sold 25,000 of them.

Inspired by a device his grandfather used to propel tobacco snuff up his nose, Persoone created a ‘Chocolate Shooter’ to deliver a hit of Dominican Republic or Peruvian cocoa powder, mixed with mint and either ginger or raspberry.

“The mint and the ginger really tinkle your nose,” the 46-year-old said in his chocolate factory in the medieval city of Bruges. “Then the mint flavor goes down and the chocolate stays in your brain.”

Tattoo-clad Persoone, who has collaborated with celebrated chefs such as The Fat Duck’s Heston Blumenthal and elBulli’s Ferran and Albert Adria, has a history of culinary innovation.

Alongside the classics, he has created chocolates flavored with bacon and onion, oysters and even grass.

It took some perfecting to create the snorting powder as chocolate itself was too dry. Before the successful formula was discovered, Persoone used a mix that included chili pepper.

“It’s a very bad idea,” he said.

The chocolate shooters, which sell for €45 (S$69) each, have been exported to Russia, India, Canada, Australia and the United States.

The packaging bears a warning against excessive sniffing, but Persoone insists it is safe. He was inspired by the role of the nose when tasting food and, he says, a certain idea of fun.

“The mentality when you think about sniffing is: ‘Oh it’s kinky, guys who do that stuff…’” Persoone said.

“I’m not the bad boy promoting drugs, not at all … Life is boring. Let’s have fun.”

  • Has Lawyer M Ravi Had Enough Of His Client CPF Blogger Roy Ngerng?

Has Lawyer M Ravi Had Enough Of His Client CPF Blogger Roy Ngerng?

The following video, believed to have been recorded on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, outside the Subordinate Courts, shows lawyer M Ravi talking at length about his client, CPF blogger Roy Ngerng.

The purpose of Ravi’s court attendance, as he explains in the video, appears to be for an application for Ngerng to leave Singapore’s jurisdiction to go to Norway.

    But Ngerng didn’t show up.

Here is a snippet of what Ravi said to the camera at 3 minutes 25 seconds:

“And you know what, to date, I’ve done so much of work and he’s keeping all the money, a hundred thousand I guess, to the tune of $70,000 or so. And what has happened?

    He’s now blogging I understand.

Why is he not in this court when he wants to leave jurisdiction today to Norway? The application had been… the court is just waiting for him. Why is he not turning up to court? Why is he not answering anybody? Why is he not calling my office? Why did he not say that ‘Ravi or even a message I’m sorry I’m not turning up, I’m not leaving the country’. There’s no respect for the judge. Yet he has the gall and temerity to say that our judges are corrupted, our judges are not independent and this and that. And what respect do you have?

He goes behind my back, he goes and blogs, you know? And I’m going to discharge, if he is continuing his behaviour, either he goes and see a psychiatrist…

    […]

… because I’m fighting for him tooth and nail and he’s swindling the money.”

    Here is the video:

Update, Feb. 8, 2015, 12.30am: The previous uploaded video is no longer accessible:

A rift appeared to have occurred between lawyer and client when Ravi had to publicly distance himself a few weeks ago from a potentially libellous online article put out by Ngerng and his friends.

Ravi also said Ngerng is “too impulsive” to contest the next General Election with him in the same team.

We’d include more details about the origins of the video when we find out more.

    *Update*

The video was produced by an individual by the name of Teo En Ming, who is popularly known in the Hardwarezone forums as sgvideoman.

Teo raised eyebrows last year when he filed a police report after his Hardwarezone forum account ‘sgvideoman’ was banned from the forums by one of the moderators.

His ‘fame’ on the Hardwarezone forum stemmed from his claim that he is being targeted by the Singapore Government and had lost two jobs because of it. His claim can be found in this Hardwarezone thread titled “(Wanbao material) Guy gets fired for shltting everywhere in the company“.

Teo also stated that he has filed a complaint to the United Nations Human Rights Council about the Singapore Government for persecuting and blacklisting him. He also claimed that he could have been poisoned by the Singapore Government in his complaint.
