Penang-born Husband Took Singaporean Wife and Two Children to Syria, Join ISIS

A 37-year-old Penang-born man has brought his Singaporean family to Syria where they are believed to be in different locations fighting alongside jihadists or supporting them.

His Singaporean wife was a 47-year-old widow who had a daughter and a son – aged 18 and 14 – from a previous marriage, The Star newspaper reported on Friday.

The report quoted sources as saying the family went to Syria in November, but did not stay together.

“The authorities believe the man joined the Jabhat Al-Nusra group and his stepson the IS (Islamic State),” the sources told the newspaper. IS is also known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“The wife worked as a cook while the daughter taught English to the children of the fighters in Syria,” one source was quoted as saying.

The family members are believed to be in different parts of Syria, according to the newspaper. One possible location is east Hama, where jihadists are known to have set up a base of operations.

Authorities are keeping close tab on the family and trying to find out how they were influenced to go to Syria, said the report. The sources said the authorities believe their decision had to do with the woman’s former husband.

In July, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean disclosed in parliament that several Singaporeans are among 12,000 foreigners taking part in the armed conflict in Syria, including a couple of parents who had taken along their children

Among the “handful” of Singaporeans is said to be a woman who went with her foreign husband and their two teenage children.

“The whole family is taking part in the conflict in various ways, either joining the terrorist groups to fight, or providing aid and support to the fighters,” said Mr Teo, who is also Singapore’s Home Affairs Minister.

Another man, Haja Fakkurudeen Usman Ali, 37, took with him his wife and three children between the ages of two and 11. He is a Singapore citizen who was an Indian national, the Home Affairs Ministry had said in March when announcing that he was under investigation.

Several other Singaporeans had planned to join the conflict but were detained before they could set off, and some others were under investigation, said Mr Teo.

The Star newspaper had earlier reported that five former Internal Security Act detainees are among 40 Malaysians who have joined the militants.

The five named include 45-year-old former Kedah PAS Youth information chief Mohd Lotfi Ariffin, who was injured in an attack which killed the youngest Malaysian jihadist in Syria on Tuesday. Mohammad Fadhlan Shahidi Mohammad Khir, 21, from Kedah was the second Malaysian jihadist to be killed in Syria.

The first Malaysian militant to die in Syria was Abu Turob, 52, who was killed during an attack by tanks and snipers on Aug 19.

In Putrajaya, Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called on Malaysians to reject extremist views and protect the country’s image. He said the actions of a few individuals did not reflect the true nature of the country and its people.

“We don’t want Malaysia to be presumed internationally as a breeding ground for terrorists (and) we must protect the image of our religion and country based on the principle of moderation or wasatiyyah.

“This principle has to be defended by all citizens. We have to avoid being extreme left or extreme right.”

Religious Leaders Conducted Prayers For Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix

SINGAPORE: With the gaze of the motor racing world set to be firmly focused on Singapore next week with the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix, the organisers have left nothing to chance to ensure it runs smoothly.

A ceremony was held at the race’s Marina Bay Street Circuit on Wednesday (Sep 10), where religious leaders from Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Sikhism, Judaism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism and the Baha’i faith conducted prayers for good weather and the safety of the 23 drivers and their teams, race officials and spectators.

“As we gear up and put the finishing touches to the Marina Bay Street Circuit, we will not leave anything to chance,” said Mr Colin Syn, deputy chairman of Singapore GP, the event’s promoters and organisers.

“We are honoured to have the religious leaders representing various faiths with us here today to participate in this tradition to bless the track and pray for the event.”

The tradition, which started with the inaugural race in 2008, was continued as the finishing touches were put to the 5.065km circuit for this year’s edition.

Coming into the Singapore Grand Prix, Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg leads the drivers’ championship with 238 points, ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton (216) and third-placed Daniel Ricciardo (166) of Red Bull.

Last year’s Singapore Grand Prix winner, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull, is sixth with 106 points.

Mercedes also lead the constructors’ championship with 454 points, ahead of Red Bull (272) and Williams (177).

  • Dr Mahathir: Malays Are Lazy and Dishonest Bunch

Dr Mahathir: Malays Are Lazy and Dishonest Bunch

    Tun-Mahathir2

“I spent 22 years trying to change the Malays, trying to alter the perception that they were lazy, I failed,” Malaysia’s longest serving prime minister said today.

His comments came after the Education Ministry revealed that two examination papers for a national primary school test had been leaked, forcing nearly 500,000 pupils to resit the papers on September 30.

“In the past, when a Malay was sentenced to jail, the offender would hang his head in shame as it was not something to be proud of.

“But today, when a Malay is sentenced to jail, the offender will walk with his head proudly in the air, smiling as if he has achieved something.”

The former prime minister was speaking at the launch of the book “Wahai Melayu” by author Anas Zubedy in Petaling Jaya today.

He cited Mat Rempit or members of Malay motorcycle gangs as an example of Malays who did not feel ashamed about not working hard.

If anyone asks me today, I would have to say Malays are lazy. – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad

“When they fail, they say we will go and become Mat Rempit. Look at the gender breakdown in our public universities.

“Women make up 70% of the students while men are a mere 30%. What has happened? Is Malaysia lacking in males?

“No, the Malay men appear to feel proud to be Mat Rempit. They do not feel ashamed when they fail in their examinations.”

Dr Mahathir said he spent 22 years as prime minister trying to change the mindset of the Malays and turn them around.

“I always tell non-Malays not to think that the Malays are lazy. If anyone asks me today, I would have to say Malays are lazy,” Dr Mahathir said.

Another failing among the Malays, he said, was the lack of honesty and integrity, and their failure to handle money properly.

He spoke of his experience running a bakery after his retirement from politics.

“I am operating a bakery and have given many opportunities to Malays to hold management positions.

“Unfortunately, time and time again, honesty and integrity appear to be lacking as there have been staff who keep stealing.

“They do not seem to understand that it is wrong to take what is not theirs, they do not think of the big picture or the long term.”

He said he had hoped to change the Malay mindset by introducing the Look East Policy in 1982 because he had high regard for the attitude and determination of the Japanese, to whom failure was “unacceptable”.

“Despite the massive setbacks they had suffered, the Japanese refused to yield. They were determined to rebuild their country (after World War II).

“Look at how Japan has risen from the ashes. Their economy is among the top five in the world. This was accomplished with blood and sweat.

“To redeem their honour, the Japanese united and strived to make their country’s economy strong until it was among the top five in the world.

“The Japanese feel ashamed if they fail to accomplish what they have set out to do. They take everything seriously.”

“In the old days, Japanese commit hara-kiri or seppuku (suicide) if they have failed. This is because failure is unacceptable.”

Dr Mahathir also reminded Malays to repay their debts so that they would not be looked upon poorly.

“Unpaid debts not only affects us as individuals, but as a race as well. We do not want other people to look at us and assume we are bad paymasters.

“As Malaysia heads towards 2020, the Malays must work hard to ensure that they are not the poor people of Malaysia,” Dr Mahathir said.

“If we fail, we should not blame anyone but ourselves. We have failed because we did not do what was right.” – September 11, 2014.

PETALING JAYA: The return of a Malaysian citizen to New Zealand to face criminal charges there is still subject to completion of legal arrangements said the New Zealand  Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

It did not however say what these arrangements were.

It was reported on Tuesday that Wisma Putra has given the go-ahead for Warrant Officer 2 Muhammad Rizalman Ismail to be sent back to New Zealand to face burglary and assault charges, although it was subject to a formal request by New Zealand to send him back.

“The matter of Muhammed Rizalman bin Ismail’s return is still subject to completion of legal arrangements and MFAT is not in a position to comment further at this time,” said an MFAT spokesman Wednesday in response to a query by the Star Online on whether New Zealand had formally requested for Rizalman to be sent back to the country.

Muhammad Rizalman was discharged from psychiatric evaluation at the Tuanku Mizan Military Hospital at the end of July.

His whereabouts in Malaysia are currently undisclosed.

The former defence staff assistant of the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington was accused of burglary and assault with intent to rape Tania Billingsley, 21, at her Wellington home on May 9.

He flew back to Malaysia on May 22 despite facing trial in New Zealand, as Wisma Putra invoked diplomatic immunity.
