Analysis: Islamic State Distortion Of Hijrah: Emigrating For A Lost Cause

Since 2015 there have been at least a dozen Singaporeans investigated by the Singapore authorities for harbouring intention to travel or emigrate to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS). This year four individuals were detained for the same reason. In September, IS issued a propaganda video featuring a Singaporean who is known to have gone to Syria to join IS. In the brief three-and-a-half minute video, Megat Shahdan Bin Abdul Samad calls on Muslims to relocate to IS-controlled territories or locations where the group’s influence is present.

He quotes a hadith or Prophetic saying that implicitly affirms that the duty of hijrah will not cease until the Final Hour (Doomsday). While most people would ignore or reject such a call, especially coming from a terrorist group, there will be a few who will fall prey to extremists’ exploitation of hijrah and other Islamic concepts. They include the literalists and those who understand the hadith without using appropriate tools of enquiry and interpretation used in the science of hadith. Like Shahdan, they would believe that relocation to IS fulfils a religious obligation.

    The Origin of Hijrah

IS’ promotion of hijrah calls for a deeper examination of the concept. To begin with, what was the cause of hijrah as reported in Islamic history? Why did Prophet Muhammad encourage Muslims to emigrate? How should Muslims react to calls for hijrah? And why should terrorist propaganda and interpretation draped in scripture be roundly dismissed?

Hijrah is Arabic for emigration. In the early days of Islam, Prophet Muhammad and his followers were ill-treated and harassed by polytheist Meccan Arabs over differences in religious beliefs. They were subjected to economic and social boycott and barred from marriage and trade. When these tactics failed to stop people from converting to Islam, the pagan Quraish clan resorted to physical abuse. This triggered the first hijrah to Ethiopia which was then ruled by a Christian king named Negus.

The Quraish intensified their violence when they learned that several Muslims secretly sought refuge in Medina. The clan also plotted the assassination of the Prophet. This marked a serious escalation of efforts to stop the practice of Islam, from mistreatment to violence, including an assassination plot against the Prophet.

These developments led to Prophet Muhammad’s emigration to Medina. This marked the second and final hijrah in Islamic history. Viewed in its historical context, hijrah was in effect a means to preserve the basic right to practise one’s faith and to protect one’s life.

    Distortion of Hijrah by IS

IS however exploited hijrah to build up their human capital and resources in their newly-established ‘caliphate’ which they declared in June 2014. The group’s online magazine Dabiq (later known as Rumiyah) and weekly online Arabic newsletter An-Naba’, for instance, frame hijrah as a religious obligation, an act of worship that would bring a Muslim close to God, and a manifestation of true faith.

IS claims that Islam requires Muslims to live in an Islamic state that practises Shari’ah law over a territory governed by non-Muslims or by Muslims administering man-made laws.

IS asserts that Muslims should leave his country (especially in the Middle East) which was created based on the colonial era Sykes-Picot “false border demarcation” and relocate to IS to support the caliphate and redraw the borders. Both Hadith and Sunnah (Prophetic tradition and practice) were distorted to back these arguments. Shahdan’s video is a clear example of such distortion.

    The Correct Understanding of Hijrah

IS’ narrative on hijrah needs to be debunked for its so-called religious justifications.

Contrary to IS claims, hijrah to IS is not among the best forms of worship and does not make a Muslim closer to God. Many acts of worship bring a Muslim closer to God, from regular prayers and repentance to generous donations and charitable acts. A hadith was reported to have implied that whoever comes to the mosque of Quba (in Medina) and prays in it will have a reward similar to performing an umrah (small pilgrimage).

This suggests that location is not fundamental to get closer to God but the performance and quality of a ritual. Hijrah to IS to achieve this goal is unnecessary.

IS falsely claims that Prophet Muhammad instructed Muslims to sever ties with family and tribe by performing hijrah. The hadith was, in fact, a directive for a newly-converted Muslim to detach himself from the religious practices of his people, not blood ties. This is to distinguish himself from the other faith groups through his observance of religious obligations.

Maintaining good relationship with non-Muslim family members is part of Islamic teachings. This is evident in the Prophet’s behaviour towards his two pagan paternal uncles. Hence, there is nothing Islamic when a Muslim leaves his family and heads to IS – like what Shahdan did – with the hope of receiving blessings from God and die as a martyr.

    Way Forward: Migration from Literalism

Lastly, Prophet Muhammad was reported as saying that hijrah will not cease until repentance is ceased. Repentance will not cease until the sun rises from the west (a major sign of the end of time). Although the hadith is authentic, its reading must be complemented with the understanding of its implicit objective. Hijrah in this hadith does not suggest a physical relocation but rather a change in mindset and behaviour.

Islam promotes progressive thinking and positive change in life. A believer must think of ways to become a better person each day to benefit not only himself but those around him including animals and nature. A Muslim who learns Islam by heart and perseveres to ponder upon its teaching marks a ‘hijrah’ in his cognitive attitude towards his faith, from a literalist to a pragmatist. Hijrah is also a manifestation of a paradigm shift.

A Muslim who constantly seeks to upgrade his knowledge so that he could be of service to others is expressing a form of hijrah towards becoming a useful and productive Muslim. Similarly, a Muslim who strives to distance himself from evil is making hijrah towards becoming a better Muslim who understands his religion holistically. These counter-narratives can be understood from other prophetic sayings such as “An emigrant is one who ditches mistakes and sins”. In another hadith the Prophet was reported as saying: “An emigrant is the one that ditches from anything that Allah has forbidden.”

The fall of IS’ de facto capital Raqqa is not likely to lead to a decline in the propagation of literalist, narrow and extremist interpretations of Islamic scriptures. IS will decentralise and exploit social media platforms to the fullest to maintain its hold over its followers and to radicalise even more vulnerable segments of society.

Given this scenario, it is imperative that action be taken not only to debunk extremist teachings through various means but also to disseminate widely moderate and progressive values which will act as a ‘firewall’ against false, deviant and divisive ideas.

Commentary: Things Will Remain As They Are Until The Majority Wakes Up And Get Real

Those calling for resignation of senior staff must be dreaming. If even the tragic accident which caused the death of two young staff did not lead to any resignation, do you expect any senior staff to resign over this recent accident?

Are you not aware that they have a culture of forgiving themselves and their chosen ones?

Budget overruns of hundreds of millions (YOG) and gross overpayment to consultants for designing a small rubbish dump are also forgiven.

Things will remain as they are until the majority wakes up and get real.

  • Jangan Jadi Suami Yang Cari Isteri Bila ‘Perlu’ Sahaja

Jangan Jadi Suami Yang Cari Isteri Bila ‘Perlu’ Sahaja

Tadi semasa di Kuantan, seorang lelaki jumpa saya dan kata saya tak fahamlah wanita ni ustaz. Dan saya dah tak nak faham. Saya nak berpisah dah sebab kami tak sehaluan.
Cuba abang tulis kebaikan isteri abang..
Saya tak tahulah ustaz, saya dah tak nampak baik dia. Saya pun penat.

Biar saya bagitahu abang sebuah kisah. Kisah ni realiti yang berlaku. Bila kita suami sakit. Demam. Pening. Kita mengadu pada siapa. Isterikan. Saya tengah malam kadang sakit. Isteri tolong urutkan. Buatkan air panas. Risau. Carikan apa-apa ubat. Layan sakit kita..
Isteri jaga anak-anak. Dia bagi kita rehat.

Bila anak sakit. Mereka mengadu dengan siapa. Dengan ibunya. Anak merengek sape layankan. Ibunya. Setiap hari tanpa jemu.

Tapi isteri sakit, pening, migrain, sakit perut, susah. Dia mengadu pada siapa? Tiada siapa abang. Suami? Banyak tak nak dengar. Paling-paling tanya teruk ke? Pergilah klinik. Ala sikit jer. Kadang mengadu sakit kena marah lagi. Jika sebuah keluarga semuanya sakit demam. Kita suami demam. Isteri demam. Anak demam. Sape yang jadi kuat dan akan macam sihat? Isteri…mereka sayang dan risau yang lain terlupa dia pun demam dan sakit.

Mereka tiada tempat mengadu. Kawan pun terhad. Mereka seorang diri cuma luah dengan air mata seorang diri. Biasanya.
Wanita kuat dan tabah. Dia bersalin anak kita. Berapa kali mati untuk kita. 9bulan bawa perut sana sini. Lepas bersalin, terus susukan anak. Berjam-jam. Rehat sekejap anak menangis nak susu lagi…

24jam urus semua tanpa rehat. Bersuami tapi tak boleh berbual. Tak nak dengar. Dahler takde kawan-kawan. Takde sesiapa.

Berilah masa belajar iman. Hidupkan Ta’lim rumah..
Baik ustaz. Terima kaseh. Baru saya faham kenapa ustaz amat cintakan wanita.

Rasulullah saw sendiri orang paling hargai keluarga. Kita semua sama. Yang bezakan kita disisi Allah ialah takwa. Kemuncak takwa ialah akhlak yang baik. Kemuncak akhlak yang baik ialah berbuat baik terhadap isteri.

  • Malaysian Civil Servant Sacked After ‘MIA’ For More Than 2,000 Days

Malaysian Civil Servant Sacked After ‘MIA’ For More Than 2,000 Days

A civil servant from Malaysia’s Ministry of Education was sacked after he was absent from work for more than 2,000 days, according to a report by Astro Awani on Tuesday (Nov 14).

Astro quoted Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid, who was speaking at the launch of the ministry’s Integrity Day where he stressed the importance of integrity among civil servants and how they must strive to avoid being dismissed from work.

Mahdzir cited an example of how a ministry employee was sacked after being absent from work for 2,002 days – which is equivalent to almost five-and-a-half years.

“This incident happened in a rural school and we do not actually know how the employee could be absent for up to 2,000 days,” he reportedly said.

“We don’t know what the problem was – the principal was persuading the employee to come to work for years,” he added.

Mahdzir did not specify that the staff in question was a teacher, adding that the employee could also be a school clerk or lab assistant.

“We take into consideration the fact that civil servants staying in rural areas sometimes are forced to take a boat for six hours, then drive for two hours before walking for another four hours to finally get to work … but I’m not saying that’s what happened (in this case),” he added.

Mahdzir was also quoted by Bernama as saying that out of almost 3,500 cases of wrongdoing committed by employees from the Ministry of Education from 2010 till October 2017, 55.4 per cent of the cases were relating to absenteeism.

And of the absenteeism cases, more than 68 per cent were committed by executives while the rest involved personnel at management level.

The Malaysian government encourages any civil servant who faces problems to seek help from the counseling department in their respective offices, Astro added.

  • Victim’s Account: SMRT Train Collision At Joo Koon

Victim’s Account: SMRT Train Collision At Joo Koon

15 November morning, I was riding the MRT towards Joo Koon from Pioneer. I was at the front cabin of the train that almost reached Joo Koon MRT. At exactly 8.20 am, there was a loud bang, and a violent shaking threw everyone onto the floor. The lights also suddenly went out. I almost thought we were about to fall over.
From the pilot cabin, we could hear the Driver speaking on the radio. He spoke to the control center that the train behind had collided with the train behind.
A Bangladeshi or Indian man could not get up. He hit his head in the collision. A Caucasian man (possibly from Europe), rendered assistance.
I tried pressing the comms button, but there was no response. The Caucasian man spoke to the driver through the opening of the door, informing that there is an injured person on board.

An SMRT staff came from the other side to check on the casualty. He probably came from the rear of the train. We asked him if it was possible to open the train door to let the injured person out. The staff said that if the train door was opened, then all the train doors would be opened at the same time, which would endanger passengers walking on the electrified tracks. I asked him if it was possible to just open only a single door. He replied they cannot control it like that.
After a long time, the front door from the driver side was opened. 2 passengers helped the injured man to his feet and got him out first. The rest of us then followed outside. It was 8.50, half an hour since the collision.

At the control station of Joo Koon, people were forming a long queue. They were queuing to get the excuse sheet, as well as to cancel the overstay status, as they cannot tap out with their EZ Link cards. To my dismay, I realized that the gantry of Joo Koon was still deducting fares. The one thing that never breaks down. I approached the staff, explained the fare deduction should be cancelled. She told me that she has no power to make such a decision, and just referred me to another staff. After approaching 3 staff, the male SMRT staff opened one gate with no fare deduction. I told him the fare waiver should be for the whole station, not just one gate, but he said this was the best he could do.

It was a bad experience, but I could say I was lucky enough to get away with just a few bumps. Others weren’t so lucky. This has already become the norm. And you can see the resilience of Singaporeans from the way we tap on our phones even as we were stuck on board.
I would like to thank Mr Khaw for such an experience, because every time he opens his big mouth, an incident is never far behind. More to come. Maybe better not say what next or else our loved ones may be trapped inside. The families of the top ‘unaccountability’ not involved bcos they are elitistically and affluentably chaffeured !!!!!😎😎😎😎😎
