  • Toa Payoh Lor 8 Hawker Centre Pushing Incident – First Person Witness Account From Janice Lim

Toa Payoh Lor 8 Hawker Centre Pushing Incident – First Person Witness Account From Janice Lim

We got in touch with Janice Lim, identified via her Facebook comments on the viral video to be a credible first person witness when the pushing incident happened at Toa Payoh Lor 8 Market and Food Centre last night.

In the video, a well-dressed lady is seen arguing with an old man over the seats at a round table in the hawker centre. She called someone for help and an equally well-dressed young man came to her rescue, shoving the old man from behind, causing him to fall forward:

Janice recounted the whole incident to us from the beginning. She said the incident happened at around 8.45pm. The hawker centre was very crowded and the table which caused the incident was the only available table where no one was seated.

When the old man approached the table with his tray of food, there was no one seated at the table. However, there was a folded purple umbrella placed on the table, presumably to chope the seat.

The young woman then confronted the old man and shouted at him rudely and loudly, spewing a slew of vulgarities which was what caught Janice’s attention.

Janice said that the old man was polite throughout his verbal exchange with the lady. He had said that he only needed one seat and politely asked if all the seats were taken, questioning how many seats did the lady need exactly. The lady did not reply directly. Instead, she insisted that the table was reserved and the old man has no right to occupy a seat. She kept cursing the old man before calling her friend on her mobile to get help.

The young man then came from behind, pushing the old man, causing him to fall forward. What happened from this point is captured on video.

Janice said that after the pushing, another kind gentleman came over and offered for the old man to sit with him at his table (don’t say Singaporeans are all selfish). Someone should identify this good guy and buy him a beer or something!

Janice said that the well-dressed couple did not eat anything, but they ordered many takeouts and continued to occupy the table. There were no other people who came to join them at the table either.

Janice also shared that another guy went over to the young man and told him that he should not have pushed the old man. In agitation, the young man pushed and shoved all the used plates and utensils on the floor in a fit of rage.

Janice concluded the interview saying that she was shocked by the behaviour of the well-dressed couple and that this is the one of the worst manifestation of the ‘chope’ culture that we have in Singapore.

Hopefully, this interview with Janice cleared the air on what actually transpired, providing the context to the video.

  • Boy’s Legs Amputated After Alleged Abuse From Religious School Assistant Warden In Malaysia

Boy’s Legs Amputated After Alleged Abuse From Religious School Assistant Warden In Malaysia

An 11-year-old pupil from a private religious school in Kota Tinggi here has had both of his legs amputated after he was allegedly beaten with a water hose by an assistant warden.

The boy’s mother Felda Wani Ahmad, 40, claimed that her son Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gadaffi was beaten several times on both of his legs during incidents that happened in March.

She said the incidents came to light when her son begged her to take him home as he could not bear it any more.

“On March 31, I came to visit my son and decided to bring him home here in Johor Baru as he was looking very weak and worried,” she told reporters when met at Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI) on Saturday.

She added that her son had suffered from fever since his return and both of his legs swelled due to blood clots.

“I took my son to HSI for treatment on April 19, and he has been hospitalised until today,” said Felda Wani, adding that her son’s legs were amputated during an operation on Friday.

Meanwhile Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said in a statement that the boy’s condition was still critical.

“The hospital will carry out further investigation to find out if the boy is suffering from another illness which contributed to his condition,” he said.

When contacted, Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Rahmat Othman confirmed the case and said that the police were still waiting for a full medical report from the hospital.

“We will investigate the matter by calling the warden assistant in for questioning,” he said without elaborating further.

  • Dispatch Rider, 23, Plies The Roads With A Prayer And A Dream

Dispatch Rider, 23, Plies The Roads With A Prayer And A Dream

Friends of Mr Fitri Ismail used to tease him for being a delivery boy.

“Last time, they liked to disturb me. They’d say, ‘See, I work in a cafe and I (am) already a manager but you are still doing deliveries’,” said the 23-year-old.

But Mr Ismail is having the last laugh – for now, at least.

For the past year, he has been pulling in $3,000 to $4,000 a month as a Deliveroo delivery rider, more than what some of his peers earn in their office or F&B jobs.

“It’s funny to see those friends who used to poke fun at me now joining as dispatch riders too,” said Mr Ismail, who used to earn $1,200 as a pizza deliveryman after Central Provident Fund (CPF) deductions of about $400.

Besides the good take-home pay, Mr Ismail enjoys his job’s flexible hours, which allow him to time his days off with his father’s medical appointments.

But the gig economy job comes with the downsides that many have warned about.

As a freelancer, Mr Ismail does not get the benefits that an employee has. There are no employer’s CPF contribution, medical benefits, paid annual leave or work injury compensation.

“My mum worries about me not having funds in my CPF so I give her about $200 every month to top up my account and earn the interest there,” said Mr Ismail.

He has a total of $4,000 in his CPF account now – which he knows will not go far for needs such as buying a flat or medical costs.

So, he tries to make sure he squirrels away $1,800 a month as savings. Currently, he has about $10,000 in the bank.

He wants to put aside $150,000 by the time he hits his 40s. Then, he hopes, he can quit being a dispatch rider and start his own F&B and delivery business with friends.

“I only have a certificate from ITE so it’s hard to find other jobs. I tried applying to be a gym instructor, front-line police officer and technician but was rejected,” he said.

Mr Ismail is one of 200,000 freelancers in Singapore, a group of workers that is expected to grow as the gig economy gains traction.

While it has meant better take- home pay for some such as Mr Ismail, the Government and economists alike worry about their long- term financial health.

Another concern is the fact that the job is physically demanding and can be risky.

Mr Ismail plies the roads from 11.15am to 11.15pm, four or five days a week. He pushes himself to make two to three deliveries an hour in the Orchard area where he is based. That brings his hourly wage to an average of about $21. On top of his $8.50 an hour pay, he earns $4 on weekdays and $6 on weekends for every delivery.

He has made up to 40 deliveries a day – a record among Deliveroo riders, according to Mr Ismail.

His own biggest worry is getting injured in an accident on the road. So far, he has only had one minor run-in with a speeding car, which dented the back of his red and black Honda Wave motorbike.

He knows that having a body fit enough for work is his only financial bulwark for now. Every day, as he straddles his vehicle and revs up its engine, he spends an extra five seconds mumbling a silent prayer.

“God, please protect me on the roads and let me live another day.”
