Singaporean Heroes Rescued Woman Trapped In Car During Holiday In Iceland

An Icelandic woman was saved by four Singaporeans after her car turned turtle in an accident in icy road conditions.

But she could not remember anything about the Singaporeans or the dramatic rescue on a road about 40km east of the capital Reykjavik on Tuesday. The rescue was caught on video.

When she finally saw the video, shot by one of the four Singaporeans who helped, she said she cried.

Miss Audur Gisladottir, 21, who works in a nail salon, was on her way to meet a friend in Hverageroi, a town in the south of Iceland when the accident happened.

She can remember listening to US band Korn as she drove in her red 2008 Toyota Yaris behind a big truck that day.

Miss Gisladottir told TNP: “I was driving at 90kmh when I suddenly lost control of the car and hit a sign.

“I think the car rolled three times and I broke the window with my head.”

The car landed on its roof at the road side, with Miss Gisladottir hanging upside down from her seat, held up by her seat belt.

She said: “I got a big wound on my head, a lot of broken glass went inside of my body and I sprained my back and neck.”

She was admitted to the hospital for nine hours and did not suffer any long-term injuries.

The Singaporeans saw her car overturn and rushed to help, as she screamed.

They helped her out but she cannot remember them as she was drifting in and out of consciousness, she said.

She said: “I kind of remember everything except after the car stopped. I do not remember screaming and crying like in the video.”

The video of the rescue has gone viral, with more than 4,600 views on Facebook.

Mr Muhammad Syahidin, 27, who goes by Denda Maradona on Facebook, posted the video on the day of the accident.(See report below.)

Netizens hailed them as heroes for their bravery and quick-thinking.

Miss Gisladottir had no clue about the video, and its rising popularity.

She found out about it only when she was interviewed by a reporter from Icelandic news website Stundin.

When asked about how she felt when she saw it, she said: “I was really sad about what had happened and I cried when I first saw the video.

“I am thankful that I survived with no serious injuries.

“I am also very thankful that they (her rescuers) were there and came to rescue me, even though I don’t remember them.”

Sheposted on Facebook photographs of the accident and of herself in the hospital bed on Tuesday.

She said thank you in Icelandic to the people who rescued her and the hospital staff.

Mr Muhammad Syahidin and his friends had arrived in Iceland on Nov 15, for an 11-day trip to catch the Northern Lights.

One of the friends, Mr Salihin Idderos, reposted Ms Gisladottir’s post on Facebook, saying: “Glad she’s OK.”

  • Man Hospitalised After His Motorcycle Hit A Wild Boar On BKE

Man Hospitalised After His Motorcycle Hit A Wild Boar On BKE

A 25-year-old man has been hospitalised after hitting a wild boar with his motorcycle on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) on Sunday night (Nov 13) – in the second road accident involving the porcine creature this year (2016).

Both times, both wild boars died.

The accident on Sunday happened at around 7pm on the BKE heading towards the Pan Island Expressway, after the Dairy Farm Road exit, reported Chinese evening newspaper Shin Min Daily News on Monday.

It said the motorcyclist, who was not identified, had lost control of his bike after trying to avoid hitting the animal.

He skidded and landed in the right-most lane of the expressway.

The man was subsequently warded at the intensive care unit of the National University Hospital and was said to still be unconscious as of Monday morning (Nov 14), with bandages on his head, face and left hand.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it received a call about the accident at 7.18pm and dispatched an ambulance to the scene.

A 48-year-old cabby, who wanted to be known only as Mr Zhang, told the Chinese paper the boar was about 1m long and appeared to have run out from the forested area on to the BKE.

This is believed to be the second road accident involving a wild boar this year (2016).

In April another motorcyclist, identified as 49-year-old senior manager Mr Krishnan, fractured his right shoulder after running into and killing a wild boar on the Seletar Expressway.

In May, a boy was hospitalised after being injured by a wild boar near Edgefield Plains in Punggol.

  • Tangled iPhone Cable In Steering Wheel Caused 4-Car Accident At Pasir Ris, Sent Metal Road Dividers Flying

Tangled iPhone Cable In Steering Wheel Caused 4-Car Accident At Pasir Ris, Sent Metal Road Dividers Flying

A driver lost control of his car and caused damage to three other cars, all because of an iPhone cable.

There were no reported injuries in the accident.

Police said they were alerted to the accident at Pasir Ris Drive 1 towards Pasir Ris Drive 12, involving three cars and one taxi, at 9.27am on Friday (Nov 4).

Mr Yeo, who was one of the drivers in the crash, told Shin Min Daily News that his iPhone charging cable was tangled in the steering wheel and causing it to jam. As a result, he lost control of the car, the Chinese evening daily reported.

His car shot to the right lane and collided into another vehicle, before sending both into the centre divider and dislodging some metal rods.

One of the rods from the road divider flew into the road opposite and jabbed the bonnet of a third car, driven by private hire car driver Mr Goh.

A taxi was also hit by a dislodged metal rod.

Mr Goh told The Straits Times that the taxi had pulled over to pick up a passenger, and he overtook it.

The rod then came flying over, and missed him by less than a metre. He jammed his brakes when he saw it.

“Everything was so sudden. If I was going faster, the rod would have hit me,” the 26-year-old told The Straits Times.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) sent two fire bikes and an ambulance to the scene.

There were no reported injuries, SCDF said.

    Police investigations are ongoing.

  • 2 Workers Taking A Nap Run Over By Truck At Mandai Worksite; Driver Arrested

2 Workers Taking A Nap Run Over By Truck At Mandai Worksite; Driver Arrested

Two workers from Bangladesh died after they were run over at a Mandai construction site on Thursday (Nov 3).

A tipper truck reversing towards a work area within the Mandai Depot that is under construction ran over them, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) found in preliminary investigations.

This is the second reported fatal accident at the depot work site for the Thomson-East Coast Line this year.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they were alerted to the accident at 20 Lorong Lada Hitam at 1.15pm.

A 36-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 47-year-old man was seriously injured.

He was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, and the hospital was alerted to be on standby to receive the patient.

He later died in the ambulance on the way to hospital, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said.

The workers were taking a nap on the ground when a lorry reversed over them, according to an ST reader who did not want to be named.

“They were both sleeping on the ground after lunch. But they were not supposed to rest there. The lorry didn’t see them and reversed into them,” said a worker from the same site.

Both workers were employees of Gammon Pte Ltd, a contractor responsible for fire protection and electrical works.

LTA said it will work with Gammon and Jurong Primewide, the main contractor, to assist the affected workers and their families.

A spokesman added that they are “deeply saddened” by the fatal accident.

Police told The Straits Times that a 54-year-old driver was arrested for “causing death by negligent act”.

MOM and the police are investigating the incident.

In May, Mr Riyade Hussain, a 23-year-old construction worker, died after he became pinned under a truss which fell from a trailer.

Mandai Depot is being built for the Thomson-East Coast MRT Line and is expected to be ready in 2019. It will also house a bus depot.
