The Day I Got Drenched At Kampong Gelam

THE DAY I GOT DRENCHED AT KAMPONG GELAM

#MYFsg office is located at 62A Arab Street, in the heart of Kampong Gelam. It is just 2 minutes walk to Sultan Mosque. I was often asked why I chose that location. To me, its a no brainer. It is a centralised youth hotspot.

Today, I found out that its not just that.

Throughout our stay in Kampong Gelam, there have been several funeral prayers conducted at Sultan Mosque for prominent community leaders who spent their life in His servitude, whose legacies helped set Singapore on a path of peace and progress. At MYF, we have a culture encouraging each other to take time to pay our last respect to our pioneer leaders, regardless of their fields. I didn’t think much of of it, then.

Just recently, the nation laid to rest one of its first-generation leaders, the late Mr Othman Wok. The funeral prayer was conducted at Sultan Mosque. The congregation itself was filled with changemakers, old and young. The sky teared heavily the moment when the casket was being transported in the pouring rain to a gun carriage to begin its journey to the burial site.

Witnessing the moment barely 5 metres away, its was solemn, drenched.

That moment, I realised the reason God placed me in Kampong Gelam.

He wants me to constantly be reminded of the contributions made by our pioneer leaders. The prosperity today could not be achieved without their sacrifices. More than I know, I needed these moments to gather strength to be steadfast in courage and passion into creating a better life, a better tomorrow for the community.

I was also reminded that there are no such thing as retirement on the path of service. You simply serve till your last breath and may our death too benefits the community, triggering reflection and repentance. When that day come, we can only hope that the next generation is ready to carry on the torch. Moving faster than us. Breaking more things than us.

It is up to us to live up to the legacy that was left for us, and to leave a legacy that is worthy of our children and of future generations.

It is no longer a question of how much we believe we owe those living in the future, not just our own children or grandchildren, but the generations of people who will come long after we are gone.

  • Shisha Banned In SG From Today

Shisha Banned In SG From Today

Shisha will be banned in the Republic from Friday (Nov 28) via the publication of the Prohibited Tobacco Regulations made under Section 15 of the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act, announced the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday.

As a transitional measure, existing licensed tobacco importers and retailers who import or sell shisha tobacco will be allowed to continue importing and retailing shisha tobacco until July 31, 2016, MOH said. This is to allow them ample time to deplete their stock and restructure their businesses away from shisha.

Those who flout the ban could be fined up to S$10,000 or jailed for up to six months or both. Repeat offenders face a fine of up to S$20,000 and up to 12 months’ jail or both.

Members of the public who have information on the import, distribution, sale or offer for sale of shisha tobacco by unlicensed operators can tip-off authorities via the reporting lines 66842036 or 66842037.

Parlimentary Secretary for MOH Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim had earlier said in Parliament that in view of health risks associated with shisha smoking, and to prevent the proliferation and entrenchment of shisha smoking in Singapore, a ban would be effected at end-November.

Last night I had a small chat with Habib Alwi Al Habshi about the recent video that I posted on FB. He thank me and told me that someone approached him and hand him a print out in related to the permissible of selling alcohol in kampong glam and near the sultan mosque. He told me that a person saw the video of his plea and decided to hand in those print out so that Habib can use those guidelines to file a complaint. May Allah reward whoever that person is.

So I decide to surf the web to get a clearer picture from that print out…

Check on the “Reviewing conservation guidelines with stakeholders”, paragraph number 19.

Habib also told me that he is moving forward with it and to make a doa for him. As soon as he says that I started to hold my tears and remain silent, because there he is stand an old man who fear of Allah, who is so passionate and fearless.

Habib Alwi’s will is an inspiration to me and I hope it is also an inspiration to all of us who have believed…

Please share the link to the whole world!
