  • Hue And Cry Over Pink Dot Event Shows Discrimination Exists

Hue And Cry Over Pink Dot Event Shows Discrimination Exists

The letter writer Ho Lay Ping (“Don’t equate difference in opinion with discrimination”, June 20) said that because the Pink Dot event is allowed to continue, it shows that “discrimination does not exist”.

A minority community which faces no discrimination would not spark calls to have its event advertising material reported to the police on the basis of it being “divisive and polarising”.

The general tone of Facebook groups such as “We are against Pinkdot in Singapore” also makes the writer’s claim of tolerance and lack of discrimination nothing short of disingenuous.

Her comments that our government ministers may have religious affiliations and “that the majority of Singaporeans follow a religion” hint at laying out who has the authority of being the moral majority to steer our society.

Our pluralistic society comprises multiple ethnicities, creeds and religions, and protecting our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) minority community is not that great a stretch.

It is unhelpful to society if our reaction to something we find discomforting is to make police reports instead of having a reasonable and adult conversation.

We can be better than this.

  • Malaysian Celebrity Criticises Racist Stereotyping Question In Moral Examination

Malaysian Celebrity Criticises Racist Stereotyping Question In Moral Examination

A primary school was today criticised by a celebrity over its decision to typecast the country’s ethnicities in a moral examination question.

In a post on the Instagram photo-sharing service, actress Sarah Lian shared a picture of a moral test paper apparently from a national school in Petaling Jaya that asked students to associate names to different houses of worship.

The names were Devi, Hock Lee, Kamal, and Steve. Students were required to write the appropriate name under pictures of a church, a Hindu temple, a Chinese temple, and a mosque.

In the photograph, the student — a daughter of Lian’s friend — linked Devi to the church, Steve to the Hindu temple, Kamal to the Chinese temple, and Hock Lee to the mosque.

The examiner marked all four answers as wrong.

“My friend’s 7yr old daughter apparently scored badly. And you wonder who makes kids racist and stereotypical???

“Well, here’s your answer! A horrible approach to stereotyping people into names races and religions. I’m so furious at this form of racism. How archaic and racist! This is so sad! #shame,” Lian wrote on her Instagram post.

Malaysian naming conventions, particularly the patronymic system used for Malay names, are regularly used to infer a person’s religious identity.

Such assumptions have led to problems, particularly in East Malaysia, where non-Muslim natives who use “bin” and “binti” are sometimes wrongly documented as Muslims by authorities.

  • Student Care Centre Guardian Jailed 10 years For Sexual Assault On 8 Boys

Student Care Centre Guardian Jailed 10 years For Sexual Assault On 8 Boys

“Uncle Wong” came so highly recommended – by his pastor, no less – that he was hired by a student care centre on the spot.

He worked as a guardian at the centre, located at a primary school, for three years, and was popular with the students. He helped the boys with their homework and bought them sweets.

    He also molested them.

The disgraced guardian was sentenced to 10 years’ jail on Wednesday (Feb 22) after a 14-day trial. He was found guilty of 13 counts of sexual assault involving eight boys aged between eight and 11. The charges include 11 for molest, and two for giving and receiving oral sex from an 11-year-old boy.

The 66-year-old man had sexually abused the boys for three years, with his colleagues and his pastor none the wiser.

“Instead of guarding and protecting them, you took advantage of them,” District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim said, calling the man a “predator”.

The abuse came to light by chance. On Sep 13, 2013, two students and another guardian witnessed Wong slipping his hand under the table to touch a 10-year-old boy’s penis.

The guardian reported him to the centre’s supervisor, who reported him to the human resources manager, and a decision was made to suspend Wong immediately.

That night, the HR manager sent him a text message: “I received a very serious complaint about you today … I want you to meet me in church on Monday. You will be under immediate suspension from work … an investigation (will be) carried out.”

Wong responded more than an hour later: “Can’t … figure out what went wrong or (what) the complaint is about, so will just have to assure my heart before God.”

Then he called three of his victims to tell them the student care centre was investigating him, and not to tell anyone he had molested them. This showed he had “absolutely no remorse”, Judge Hamidah said.

Three days later, the HR manager visited the centre to speak to three boys who claimed they had been molested by Wong. She quickly realised there were many more victims involved, and made a police report the same day.

At his trial, the woman testified she hired Wong, who worked at the centre from January 2011 until September 2013, without interviewing him first. His was “a unique case”, she said, because he had come “recommended by his pastor, (who said) he was good with children and youths”.

Even his victims, who testified against him, had nothing damning to say.

One victim said Wong was a “caring teacher” who took the boys to church and bought them “ice pops and sweets”. Another victim said he was “friendly, kind and very patient” when helping the boys with their homework.

The man plans to appeal his conviction and sentence, his lawyer said. He is out on bail – set at S$100,000 – pending the hearing of his appeal.

A further eight charges against him, which involved more victims, were withdrawn.

  • 4 Children Injured In Suspected Militant Attack On Indonesia Church

4 Children Injured In Suspected Militant Attack On Indonesia Church

Indonesian authorities on Sunday arrested a suspected militant who threw an explosive device at a church in the eastern island of Borneo and injured four children.

Police in East Kalimantan province said the attacker had been imprisoned on terrorism charges in the past.

“A suspected low-impact bomb was thrown…Four children were injured and four motorcycles were damaged,” East Kalimantan police spokesman Fajar Setiawan said, adding police were looking into links with radical networks.

The attack took place at 10am in the parking lot of Oikumene church in the town of Samarinda.

Indonesia has seen a string of Islamic State-linked attacks this year, the biggest of which was a gun and bomb assault in the capital Jakarta that killed four people.

Authorities are concerned about a resurgence in radicalism and say there are hundreds of Islamic State sympathizers in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation.

President Joko Widodo said he had ordered an investigation into the attack.

“I have ordered the police chief to take firm action and thoroughly investigate the perpetrator,” Widodo said in a statement.

  • Pekerja Kebajikan Masjid: Ada Peminta Bantuan Berkali Layan Masjid Macam ATM, Tidak Mahu Terima Syarat-Syarat

Pekerja Kebajikan Masjid: Ada Peminta Bantuan Berkali Layan Masjid Macam ATM, Tidak Mahu Terima Syarat-Syarat

Membaca komen2 org yg salahkan masjid kerana ada org susah yg tak dpt bantuan masjid tp dapat bantuan church…kata mereka masjid harus bertanggungjawab jika mereka tukar agama.

Saya teringat peristiwa 5 tahun dulu.

Ada seorang klien ni mmg peminta berulang. Tak bg, dia marah. Dia complain dgn semua org kata masjid TAK PERNAH tolong. Jaja cerita ‘sedih’ dia sana sini. Sedangkan bantuannya da disambung berkali2. Da bertahun terima tp tetap dgn sikap yg sama.

Tak bg je, dia buat kecoh. Dia kata masjid tak tolong. Pergi church lg bagus, katanya. Diaorg tak byk soal tp terus bg duit.

Bayangkan bila dia kecoh2 dpn kaunter masjid. Jemaah masjid yg lain tengokkan saya. Sampai imam masjid kata, “Zuwainah kenapa tak bg dia? Kesian dia…”

Saya tak tahu nak marah ke nak nangis. Semua cerita klien adalah confidential. Kita je yg tahu da berapa kali klien tu dpt bantuan. Dah berapa byk info yg dia bohong. Berapa byk dokumen yg tak menepati cerita yg diberi.

Saya jawab, “Ustaz, dia da byk kali dpt bantuan. Cerita yg dia kecoh2kan ni tak sama dgn bukti dokumen yg ada. Saya nak dtg home visit nak tgk anak2(katanya anak2 semua dia yg jaga)dia pun dia tak bagi. Macam2 alasan dia beri”.

Ketika klien ni tengah buat kecoh, seorang jemaah terus dtg kepadanya dan bg duit. Saya terdengar atau mmg sengaja jemaah tu nak saya dengar “Takpe ambik ni buat beli makanan anak dan isteri. Tak pyh harapkan sangat duit dr masjid ke muis ni. Penat je minta”, katanya sambil ekor matanya menjeling ke arah saya.

Terus klien tu cakap pd saya, “Lepas ni saya tak nak dtg masjid lg. Saya nak pergi church aje. Awak bertanggungjawab atas semua ini!”

    Saya terdiam. Tak terjawab.

Setelah klien tu pergi, saya masuk semula ke ofis. Saya duduk diam2 di tempat saya. Masih terperanjat dgn apa yg terjadi.

Akhirnya saya tak mampu tahan. Saya menangis dalam diam. Stress nye kerja ni. Kena marah dgn klien. Kena marah dgn jemaah. Nasib tak baik, rakan kerja pun mempersoalkan.

Tapi saya tak blh ceritakan semua tentang klien tu. Itu keaibannya. Itu harga diri dia.
    Serba salah.

Kalau setakat kata, 3 tahun dulu saya pernah minta bantuan…2 minggu lps kakak saya minta bantuan tp pegawai halau keluar…semua org blh ckp. Semua org blh buat cerita atau menokok tambah apa yg ada.

Dan jika ada pegawai yg melakukan kesalahan, tidak adil untuk men’streotype’kan semua.

    Berlaku adil itu wajib.
Usah kita menzalimi orang atas alasan menegakkan keadilan bg orang lain.

Dua2 adalah saudara seislam kita. Kita tak boleh menjatuhkan seseorang untuk menaikkan seseorang yg lain.

    Hati-hati.
