    $316,000 Worth Of Drugs Seized In Two Operations By CNB On Monday

    Drugs worth more than $316,000 were seized in two operations by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) on Monday.

    Five Singaporean men were also arrested.

    The haul of drugs included more than 5.2kg of cannabis, 1.6kg of heroin and 139g of Ice, or methamphetamine, said CNB in a press release on Tuesday.

    The first operation took place in the vicinity of Sims Drive, where CNB officers were tailing a suspected drug trafficker believed to be dealing in a large amount of cannabis.

    At about 4.40pm, the officers spotted the 43-year-old Singaporean male in the void deck of an HDB block with a 41-year-old man. Both were arrested.

    Officers found 170g of cannabis after searching the trafficking suspect. They also raided his drug store in an HDB flat at Sims Drive and found about 5kg of cannabis and 139g of Ice.

    In the second operation, CNB officers were at Simei to nab a 48-year-old taxi driver suspected of drug trafficking.

    He was spotted shortly after 5 pm and followed to the vicinity of a carpark in a housing estate in Geylang Bahru.

    Another trafficking suspect, a 64-year-old male got in the taxi but soon alighted. He was arrested promptly and about 239g of heroin was recovered from him.

    Other officers then intercepted the taxi along Serangoon Road and arrested the driver.

    A video was put up on citizen journalism website Stomp of the chase, which involved “six to 10” officers tailing the taxi on cars and motorcycles.

    Officers found about 1.4kg of heroin and a small amount of Ice in the taxi. About $2,200 in cash was also seized from him.

    Upon further investigation, officers went on to raid a flat in Choa Chu Kang, believed to be the hideout of an associate of the taxi driver’s. Officers arrested a 52-year-old male and recovered some 82g of Ice, 7g of heroin and a digital weighing scale.

    Investigations are ongoing. The suspects could face the death penalty if convicted.

    Future Music Festival Asia 2015 Cancelled

    SINGAPORE – The Future Music Festival Asia 2015 will be officially cancelled and festival-goers will receive refunds, said organisers on Sunday.

    In a post on their Facebook page, the group apologised to festival-goers for the “inconvenience (they) have been put through” and said details on the refund would be made available on Monday.

    Festival organiser Livescape had twice applied for and failed to secure a public entertainment license from the authorities here. Livescape then submitted an appeal to the Minister for Home Affairs on March 3, but that was rejected too.

    About 15,000 tickets have been sold for the event, which was scheduled to be held for the first time in Singapore at the Changi Exhibition Centre on Friday and Saturday, March 13 to 14. Big acts such as Public Enemy and The Prodigy were slated to perform.

    Started in Australia in 2006 and considered one of the biggest dance music festivals in South-east Asia, the event made headlines last year when six of its concert-goers died from drug overdose in Kuala Lumpur.

    Tickets to the festival in Singapore, which cost between $148 and $388, were sold via Sistic, as well as on the festival’s website.

    Masagos Zulkifli: Government Closely Watches Emerging Drug Abuse Trends Among Young

    Emerging drug abuse trends among the young, particularly those that see youths ordering drugs online and experimenting with narcotic substances while travelling overseas, are being closely watched by the Government, said Senior Minister of State (Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs) Masagos Zulkifli today (March 6).

    The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) will maintain tight enforcement amid a “rapidly evolving operating environment”, he added.

    “We will intercept suspicious packages and prosecute those who conduct drug transactions online,” said Mr Masagos during the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Committee of Supply debate in Parliament.

    While conducting checks at checkpoints and airports, the CNB has also taken action against individuals found to have consumed drugs overseas.

    Following the deaths of several young adults from drug overdose at music events held in the region last year, Mr Masagos said the CNB was also keeping an eye on music events.

    The Ministry of Home Affairs today rejected an appeal by the organisers of the Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) to hold the event in Singapore on March 13-14. The organisers had made the appeal after their applications for a permit were rejected twice, with the police citing serious concerns over potential drug abuse at the event.

    CNB statistics showed that last year, two-thirds of new drug abusers arrested were below 30 years old. In 2013, those in the same age group made up half of new drug abusers.

    Mr Masagos said the educational profile of youth abusers was also changing, with more of those arrested coming from institutes of higher learning. Over the past five years, the number of cannabis abusers have increased by 50 per cent, he added. Out of the 184 cannabis users arrested last year, a majority were under 30 years old.

    Mr Masagos said new recommendations on how to more effectively tackle the problem among youths will be rolled out later this year.

    The recommendations will be based on findings by the Taskforce on Youths and Drugs, and also build on existing approaches to combat the scourge, such as preventive drug education, effective enforcement and early, targeted intervention for youth abusers.

    Mr Masago said Singapore must continue its zero-tolerace stance towards drugs, especially as regional networking has allowed drug syndicates to increase supply, thus making drugs cheaper.

    CNB Seizes 5 Kg Of Cannabis And Samurai Sword In Raid

    A crackdown on a suspected local drug dealer on Monday yielded a drug haul containing about 5kg of cannabis, as well as other drugs and weapons.

    On Monday afternoon, Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers went to the area around Geylang Lorong 37 to keep watch on a 34-year-old Singaporean man, the alleged drug trafficker. They suspected he would be receiving a fresh batch of cannabis.

    At about 4.20pm, a 45-year-old man, a suspected drug runner, was seen getting out of a van and placing a brown cardboard box beside a dustbin along Geylang Lorong 37, before leaving.

    Within a few moments, the suspected dealer arrived in a car and drove off with the box.

    His car was intercepted by CNB officers along Geylang Road and he was arrested on the spot.

    The box was found to contain five blocks of cannabis, weighing approximately 5kg in total.

    Also found in his car were other drugs including 164g of ‘Ice’, 137 ‘Ecstasy’ tablets, 101 Erimin-5 tablets, a digital weighing scale, drug paraphernalia and S$26,000 in cash. In addition, two samurai swords and a machete were also recovered in the suspect’s car.

    Officers also caught the suspected drug runner at a petrol kiosk around Ipoh Lane. A small packet of ‘Ice’ weighing approximately 1g was found in his van.

    The two men will be investigated for drug trafficking.

    Cannabis is a Class A controlled drug and those found to be trafficking more than 500g of it could face the death sentence.

    CNB Busts Estimated $200,000 Worth of Drugs

    SINGAPORE: More than S$200,000 worth of drugs – 1.9kg of heroin, 1kg of cannabis and 198g of Ice – were seized by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) in two separate operations on Wednesday (Nov 5).

    CNB said on Thursday that officers deployed in Clementi spotted a 28-year-old suspect arriving at a housing block in a Malaysia-registered motorcycle on Wednesday morning. The Malaysian, according to CNB officers, was seen taking a plastic bag from his vehicle before proceeding to a unit in the housing block.

    CNB said he was arrested after he was seen coming down the block without the bag. When officers went up to the unit the suspect visited, a female suspect was also arrested for attempting to flush the drugs down the toilet. The 42-year-old Singaporean had drugs comprising about 1.28kg of heroin, 1,034g of cannabis, 95g of Ice and one Erimin-5 tablet in her apartment, the agency said.

    CNB added that another two male Malaysians – both aged 40 – were arrested when they tried to leave Singapore in a Malaysia-registered lorry on Wednesday afternoon. They were suspected to be involved in the same drug trafficking syndicate, CNB said.

    In a separate operation, CNB officers alongside Singapore Police Force (SPF) officers arrested another suspected drug trafficker at a HDB void deck in Tampines Street 81. CNB said the 42-year-old Singaporean was then escorted back to his suspected hideout where about 270g of heroin and 51g of Ice were recovered.

    In a subsequent search, CNB said another 416g of heroin and 52g of Ice were also recovered from his apartment. Drug paraphernalia such as numerous improvised drug-smoking apparatus and digital weighing scales were recovered too, the agency added.

    Investigations on all the suspects are ongoing. If convicted, they may face the death penalty.
